The police in Lagos have arrested 121 persons for violating the curfew imposed by President Muhammadu Buhari nationwide in continuation of the bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Some other persons, 58 in number, were also arrested for not wearing face mask as directed by Lagos State government while 79 vehicles were seized.

The vehicles were impounded for violating the curfew.

Giving details of the arrests on Tuesday, the spokesman of the Lagos Police Command, DSP Bala Elkana, said the 121 people arrested for violating the curfew were arraigned along with 148 persons arrested for violating the earlier imposed lockdown in the state.

“They were sentenced accordingly,” Elkana said.

He added that some of the suspects were given four hours community service while others were awarded fines of N2,500 and N3000 respectively.

He said the Commissioner of Police Lagos State in Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, and other senior officers went round the state on the first day of the curfew to monitor compliance.

The CP, he said, was impressed with the level of compliance and looked forward to huge improvements in the coming days.

“On 5th May, 2020 the Commissioner of Police Lagos State and his counterpart in Ogun State visited the Police Check Point at the boundary community in Ojodu berger manned by personnel of Lagos and Ogun States. Security is tightened at the boundary community to restrict non essential interstates movements,” Elkana said.
