The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Tanko Mohammed, has emphasised the need to uphold the integrity of the Judicial arm of government of the country.

He said that was very necessary particularly at the time the Judiciary was facing a trying time.

Mohammed made the remark on Saturday when swearing in the 250 appointed chairmen and members of the election petition tribunals ahead of the coming elections.

The judicial officers who would oversee cases that may arise from the coming general election were sworn in Abuja.

It was perhaps the first official assignment carried out by Mohammed after he was sworn in as Acting CJN on Friday following the ouster of Walter Onnoghen over alleged non-declaration of assets.

“The judiciary is in the trying time, you must stand to protect and uphold the integrity of this arm of government,” he told the judicial officers.

He warned them that the oath they took was a solemn appeal to God, hence they should discharge their duties with the fear of God.

Said he:  “Therefore, it is God Almighty that you will be ultimately responsible to.

“Therefore, it is from this oath that your duties and responsibilities as chairmen and members of the Election Petition Tribunals in your various places of assignment spring forth and has a binding effect.

“This is an ethical undertaking to justice as well as upholding the rule of law in our courts.

“As such, I implore you to discharge your onerous duty diligently and with the fear of God Almighty.’’

While congratulating them, he re-emphasised the need to continue to promote the integrity of the judiciary.

“I encourage you to uphold and enhance the honour and standing of the judiciary and I pray that the Almighty God will bestow upon you strength, good health and wisdom in the performance of your duties,” he said.
