President Muhammadu Buhari’s signing of the amended Deep Offshore Act in London has made “several statements”, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole, has said.
He made the statement on Tuesday as he defended the action of the president.
The president who is on a private visit to London signed the amended Deep Offshore Act in London.
The action of the president has drawn criticism from many who believe that the job should have been left for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
But speaking on the issue on Tuesday during a visit to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, at the National Assembly, Oshiomhole said he saw nothing wrong in what the president did.
Said he: “I think by signing into law at the Nigerian House in London, it shows that wherever the president is, he is presiding over Nigeria and with the benefit of modern technology we have passed the Mungo Park era.”
He added: “So signing it in London for me has also made several statements – namely, that wherever national interest is involved, the president is on duty and wherever he is he is presiding.
“I also salute his assenting to the bill as fast as he did and even at the Nigerian House in London.”
Buhari on Monday in London signed the amended Deep Offshore Act, stating that it would increase the nation’s revenue.
The Act, he explained, would among other things, give effect to certain fiscal incentives given to the oil and gas companies operating in the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin areas under production sharing contracts between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation or other companies holding oil prospecting licenses or oil mining leases and various petroleum exploration and production companies.
