Godwin Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress, APC,  after a visit to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, has reported.

No further details have emerged as to his next move but there are indications that he may join the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Recall that Obaseki was disqualifed from participating in Edo State governorship primary of the APC scheduled for June 22, 2020.

The chairman of the screening committee of the party, Jonathan Ayuba, announced the disqualification on Friday while presenting its report to the National Chairman of APC, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole.

But in swift reaction, Obaseki described the disqualification as a mockery of democratic process.

He said Oshiomhole had assumed the position of the determiner of the future of the party.

He said he would not appeal his disqualification because he was sure he would not get justice.

During the presentation of the report to Oshiomhole, Ayuba said the disqualification of Obaseki was in view of the conclusion that “his higher school certificate was defective.”

Also, Chris Ogiemwonyi and Mathew Iduoriyekemwen, were disqualified.

Cleared were Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Pius Odubu and Osaro Obazee.

In his reaction, Oshiomhole urged anyone who felt he was unjustifiably disqualified to appeal.

Declaring that he would not appeal his disqualification, Obaseki, in a statement issued by his media aide, Crusoe Osagie, said:  “We have watched the mockery of democratic process, which Adams Oshiomhole, is administering and superintending over in our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). It has been an unfortunate, disheartening and dreadful spectacle.”

He added: “We had initially asserted that going by the open display and enthronement of illegality by one man in the party that comprises several organs and eminent personalities, there is no way that Governor Godwin Obaseki would get a fair assessment in the run-up to the nomination of candidates to fly the flag of the party in the forthcoming Edo gubernatorial election.

“It is unfortunate that this open show of shame, illegality and travesty of justice is the brand of democracy which Oshiomhole has reduced the APC into.

“The situation is quite saddening because this is a party supposedly reputed for change, equity and social justice.”
