The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has said that it has referred the allegation of telephone “tracking” and “leakage” against it to relevant security agencies for proper investigation and necessary action.

The commission announced its action on Tuesday in an allusion to the alleged leaked telephone conversion between the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi and Bishop David Oyedepo of Faith Tabernacle in Ota, Ogun State, over the last general election.

In a statement by its Director, Public Affair, Mr. Reuben Muoka, the NCC said it had been flooded with enquiries by the media over the allegation that it was involved.

While denying any involvement, the commission said it had reported the case to the necessary security agencies for investigation and necessary action.

It called on the public to disregard the allegation against it.

It stated further: “The Commission wishes to make the following clarifications:

  1. The Commission denies the allegations in their entirety.
  2. By the provisions of the Nigerian Communication Act (NCA) 2003 and other extant Laws of the Federation, the Commission does not and cannot “track” nor “leak” telephone conversations of anyone.

iii. The Commission has reported the allegations, which we take seriously, to relevant security agencies for proper investigation and necessary action.

  1. The Commission restates its commitment to discharge its responsibilities to the Nigerian people in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the NCA 2003; and other extant Laws of the Federation; and global best practices.”
