The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has disbanded the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Nigeria Police Force.
Adamu made the announcement on Sunday during a live broadcast.
The disbandment followed days of protest for the disbandment of SARS.
SARS has been accused on several occasions of gross brutality against innocent Nigerians, many leading to loss of lives.
The excesses of operatives of SARS have been condemned with many saying reforming it would not be adequate.
The squad was said to have been reformed at different times, yet their atrocities persisted.
