The governor of Bayelsa State, Duoye Diri, has stated that he will challenge the verdict of the Bayelsa State Election Tribunal which annulled his election.

In a verdict given on Monday by the tribunal sitting in Abuja, the election in which Diri emerged as the governor was said to be faulty following the exclusion of Mr. Lucky King-George, candidate of the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP) from the exercise.

The governor is of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the election was held on November 16, 2019.

The tribunal directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a fresh election within the next 90 days.

In a statement by his Acting Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Diri however said: “We trust in the judiciary and we are appealing the judgement. With God on our side, we will get justice.”

He added: “This is a court of first instance and I have instructed our lawyers to file an appeal. We have a right of appeal even up to the Supreme Court.”
