President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to resolve the issues that led to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, within two weeks.
The strike which started on February 14 has put a halt to academic activities in the nation’s universities.
The union embarked on the strike following the refusal of the government to honour agreement reached on the need to fund the higher institutions properly.
Payment of salaries and allowances were also part of the bone of contention.
It was gathered that the president gave Adamu the two weeks ultimatum, while receiving briefing from relevant ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) on Tuesday.
He was also said to have directed the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, to be present at the meeting between the two parties – union and federal government – to resolve the problems.
Also to be looked into are the issues raised by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU; Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT.
