The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has declared a nationwide strike, describing it as “comprehensive and total”.

It is for an initial one month.

The president of the union, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, made the declaration on Monday at a press conference held at the end of its “NEC for NEC” meeting started on Saturday at the University of Lagos.

The nation had waited anxiously for the outcome of the meeting.

Said the union’s president: “The NEC of our union has resolved to embark on a four-week total and comprehensive strike beginning from February 14.”

He explained that the decision was taken because members of the union could no longer tolerate the failure of the government to fulfill some of the agreements they had reached before suspending the industrial action embarked upon in 2020.

The union appealed to stakeholders for their support and understanding.

“The greatest asset of any nation is human capital. We therefore seek the understanding and support of all stakeholders to make the Nigerian government more responsible to issues of human capital development,” the president said.

The union is vexed that the government has refused to renegotiate the salaries and allowances of its members.

It is also not pleased with the attitude of the federal government over the need to adopt the University Transparency Accountability Solution, UTAS, payroll software.
