The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday raided the Epe, Lagos residence of former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

The raid of the Epe residence, it was gathered, was in connection with the continuous investigation of alleged corrupt practices against the immediate past governor of Lagos State.

Recall that following an application to the effect by the EFCC, a Federal High Court in Lagos had ordered that three bank accounts said to have been linked to Ambode should be frozen.

That was pending the completion of investigation into the alleged scam and possible prosecution.

The money involved in the alleged scam is N9.9 billion.

The accounts were said to be operated by the permanent secretary in the office of the chief of staff to the governor of the state, Adewale Adesanya .

Ambode has since denied involvement in the alleged malpractices.

According to him the accounts were opened in the course of normal operations of the Lagos State government.

His defence is contained in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr. Habib Aruna.

The statement reads: “Those accounts were opened in the course of normal operations by the Lagos state government for its administrative purposes and not for the former governor’s personal transactions as was being wrongly insinuated and have been operated to ensure smooth operations of government activities by previous and present administrations.

“The former governor was not and will never be involved in any unauthorized use of government property and resources.”
