The president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, has hailed Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State governor, over steps taken so far on the explosion on Sunday at Abule Ado in Amuwo Odofin local government area of Lagos State.
Ayokunle, in a statement issued by his media aide, Rev. Adebayo Oladeji, said the Christian association urged the federal and state governments to investigate the disaster with a view to discovering the remote and immediate causes of the incident in order to prevent a reoccurrence of the disaster anywhere in the country.
The outcome of the investigation, he said, would as well, allow necessary disciplinary actions to be taken, that is, if found that the avoidable disaster had any connection with official act of negligence, complicity or criminality.
“The lives of every citizen of this country are too precious to be wasted in this way,” he said.
He said CAN equally commiserated with the people and the government of Lagos State over the explosion which led to “the painful death of not fewer than 16 people, including the Principal of Bethlehem Girls College, Rev Sister Henrietta Alokha, who reportedly died in the process of trying to rescue the students.”
“Our hearts go to all the bereaved families and we pray to God to console and comfort them all. We at the same time pray for the quick recovery of those who are currently recuperating in the hospitals,” the CAN president added.
The group also commended Sanwo-Olu for immediately setting up of a N2 billion relief fund to cushion the effects of the disaster on all the victims.
“We call on the federal government to support the laudable action. Necessary intervention of corporate bodies is equally crucial at this moment so as to compliment the Lagos State Government’s efforts.
“We pray that never again will any part of the country experience such a disaster in Jesus Name,” he said.
