The Solidarity Network for Workers’ Rights, SNWR, has called for the immediate release of its member, Comrade Daniel Akande, said to have been arrested by the police.

The call was made on Sunday in a statement by SNWR coordinator, Segun Ogun, and the secretary, Lateef Adams.

The group said the arrest of Akande was an affront to justice and an example of the ongoing attempts to intimidate and suppress voices of dissent in the country.

“We call on all relevant authorities to address this abuse of power and ensure that the rights of citizens are protected,” the group stated.

The group explained that Akande, a dedicated member of the SNWR was arrested along with his wife by police operatives during a church service over alleged murder case.

The group described the team as being from the Nigerian Police from the Inspector General of Police Response Team (IRT) at Guzape District, FCT.

The phones of the two persons were said to have been confiscated by the police officers.

The group said it was later gathered from Akande’s lawyer that upon arrival at the IRT facility, he was questioned only once regarding whether he had received any funds during the August protests, to which he responded in the negative.

It said Akande was handcuffed without any explanation.
