The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, on Wednesday declared that the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the last presidential election had proved that former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, was not God.
Akiolu said Obasanjo had always arrogated the power of God Almighty to himself, claiming that Buhari was voted into office by virtue of his support for him.
According to him, that was why Obasanjo said that Buhari would not be returned to office for a second term as he, Obasanjo, did not approve of it.
Akiolu said to prove that he was not God, Buhari got the overwhelming support of the people of Nigeria and was voted in.
With that, Akiolu said, it had been proven that only God gives power to whom it pleases Him.
Akiolu made the remarks when participants of the Senior Executive Course 41 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, visited his palace.
His words: “I had said that Buhari would win even before the election, unfortunately, the number one person creating problems in this country is former President Obasanjo.
“He arrogated to himself the powers of the Almighty Allah by saying it was the support he gave to Buhari that made him win the first term.
“Obasanjo said Buhari would not win the second term, but did Buhari not win? Did I not say Obasanjo will be disappointed by the time the results were announced?
“The president’s victory clearly shows power belongs to God only and no man can decide who leads the country.”
The traditional ruler also spoke on the efforts by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to claim victory at the tribunal over the last election would be unsuccessful.
“If anyone of you here is close to Atiku, tell him he can never succeed in what he is doing now.
“Buhari will complete his term in office, but Buhari too has to listen to the people, pray to God and be honest in what he is doing,” he said.
Akiolu called on Nigerians to give the needed support to the Buhari government to be able to solve the problems facing the nation.
Akiolu who expressed delight at the visit by the participants described NIPSS as a good initiative that had helped in formulating policies for the country.
NIPSS’ Acting Director of Studies, Dr Nasirudeen Usman, who spoke at the occasion said they were in his palace to pay homage as it had been the tradition whenever participants visited any state.
He said the thrust of their visit to the state was to assess the problem facing the health sector.
Said he: “Your Royal Highness, you will agree with us that universal healthcare system is quite an issue in the country.
“We have been in the state since the beginning of the week to engage stakeholders in the health delivery sector, to interact with them and find out the challenges facing the sector.
“At the end of the day, we will present a copy of our report to the state government with the expectation that it would implement our recommendations to improve healthcare in the state.”
