The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen, on Friday escaped arrest as he appeared before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

He is facing charges bordering on non-declaration of assets.

Order for his arrest was on Wednesday issued following his failure to appear on previous occasions before the CCT.

The Chairman of the CCT, Danladi Umar, set aside the order for the arrest before Onnoghen’s plea could be taken.

During the arraignment, the suspended CJN pleaded not guilty of the charges against.

His counsel, Uche Chris, applied for bail and it was granted on self-recognition.

The trial was adjourned till March 11.

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Onnoghen over alleged non-declaration of assets.

An acting CJN was appointed – Tanko Mohammed.

The development has generated heat with many opposed to the suspension of Onnoghen.

Many described the suspension as more political than the fight against corruption.
