Lagos State government has approved the reduction of tuition fee for students of the Lagos State University, LASU.

The approval was announced on Friday on the Twitter handle of the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education.

The tweets read: “Flash: Lagos State government reduces tuition fee for students of Lagos State University @LASUOfficial.”

It would be recalled that the management of the university on December 10, 2020, increased the school fee of new intakes from N25,000 to N67,048.

The development has been a source of controversy, with the student union of the institution calling on the management to reverse the order.

The president of the union, AbdulBasit Ashade, had expressed dismay over the development and given the school management an ultimatum to reverse the new development.

“Within the past few weeks, the LASU-SUG had held several meetings with the university’s management team, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr Wahab Tokunbo; the Chairman of House Committee on Education, Mr Oluyinka Ogundimu; and other private stakeholders.

“The union understands the economic pressure this unprecedented hike will have on parents, guardians and students especially as the world battles with economic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Hence, the union will stop at nothing in ensuring the increment is properly reviewed.

“This is a very challenging time and we must be sensitive not to compound this burden on the indigent students,” Ashade had said.

He added: “The state government, led by Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in line with the vision of the founding fathers of this great citadel of learning should reverse the hike in the school fees within 14 days.

“Payment of school fees by the newly admitted students should be suspended and the portal for payment closed until a resolution is jointly reached by all parties.”
