President Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday, started his campaign for a re-election into the office of the president in 2019, with an appeal to all politicians to be peaceful in their campaigns.
The campaign was flagged off at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Warning that the people had no other country to claim other than Nigeria, he said the country should not be set ablaze because of political ambitions.
His words: “I am not unmindful that the National Assembly and the presidential campaign starts today, I will implore candidates to go about the campaigns peacefully and decently.
“We have no other country, let us not set it ablaze because of politics.”
The president who sought to be voted for to continue in office, explained that his government had made progress in the over three years in government.
He said if voted in, the next four years of his administration would see it building on the successes recorded in the past.
His words: “We are committed to deepening the work we started this first term such that the nation’s assets and resources continue to be organised and utilised to do good for the common man.
“The next four years will be quite significant for our country. Nigeria is faced with a choice to keep building a new Nigeria – making a break from its tainted past which favoured an opportunistic few.
“Our choices will shape us – our economic security and our future prosperity. Nigeria, more than ever before, needs a stable and people-focused government to move the agenda for our country forward.”
The president explained that although it had done a lot in the battle against corruption, there was more to be done.
He described corruption as an “existential threat” to the country.
He also promised that his government would do more in the area of education.
While promising too that the issue of security would be enhanced, Buhari said the Army would be knowledge and technology-driven.
According to him, the police would be decentralised for effective policing of states and communities, while “ensuring that we derive more strategic security benefits from our relationship with our foreign partners.”
Other areas Nigerians should expect improvement over are the economy, health, infrastructure and many more, the president said.
