A legal practitioner, Mr. Olawale Ajia, has called for the restoration of traditional family values and closer interaction with nature as recipes for minimising the pervasive incidents of social upheavals in the society.
Ajia, coordinator of the Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria, MULAN, Eti-Osa Chapter, Lagos State, made the call yesterday at the maiden family retreat of the association at the Lufasi Nature Park, Lekki, Lagos State.
He attributed the breakdown in relationships and prevalence of violence and crimes in the modern society to increasing disregard for traditional values like strong faith in God, sincere love and trust among members as well as failure to study and live by the enduring laws of nature.
The coordinator lamented that members of the legal profession who should be good role models to other members of the society in respecting and abiding by laws had not acquitted themselves well.
He pointed out that the association organised the programme in order to afford parents, children, friends and associates an opportunity to wind down in an environment in which exotic plants, animals and landscapes would impact on them, adding that the religion of Islam valued the family as basic foundation of a healthy and peaceful society as well as sincere adherence to the laws of nature.
Ajia noted that the retreat was based on what he described as ‘Potluck’ whereby each participating family would bring along any item of food or drink of its choice for its members and part of which it would share with a few other participants to remind them of the Islamic value of equality, bonding and caring for one another.
He noted that mental and physical exercises were included in the programme in line with the example of the Prophet Muhammed who used to engage in races with his junior wife – Aisha for better health.
In a lecture at the occasion, a Lagos State Customary Court Judge, Alhaja Omosalewa Onilenla Are, regretted that contrary to the teaching of Islam, Muslims spouses no longer share kindness and spirit of companionships in their relationships.
She stated that over eighty per cent of divorce cases before the courts were initiated by women across all religions, who, as a result of prolonged emotional
and physical abuses which they had suffered, resisted reconciliation.
The judge then urged young Nigerians irrespective of their faith to exercise great care in choosing their partners to ensure mutual understanding and harmony.
