Troops of the Joint Task Force in Kano, have foiled a bandits’ attack and recovered 97 cattle and 50 sheep in the Yankamaye-Rimaye axis along the Kano-Katsina boundary.

The troops, deployed at Forward Operating Bases, FOBs, and reinforced by personnel from a Response Area, acted on credible intelligence on July 15 at about 5:45p.m. that armed bandits were moving rustled livestock in the area.

A statement by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade Nigerian Army, Maj. Babatunde Zubairu, on Thursday in Kano, said the troops swiftly positioned themselves at suspected crossing points and intercepted the fleeing bandits.

He said the troops engaged the bandits in a gun duel, forcing them to abandon the rustled livestock and flee towards Katsina State.

“Following the operation, troops captured two terrorists and recovered one motorcycle, 97 cattle and 50 sheep.

“The recovered cattle have been returned intact to their rightful owners,” Zubairu said.

He, however, said a local vigilante, Mallam Yusuf Adamu, 47, from Yanchibi Village, lost his life after being caught in the crossfire.

Zubairu added that the Nigerian Army extended its condolences to the deceased’s family and the Yanchibi community over the incident.

According to him, troops have continued to comb the area in pursuit of the fleeing bandits.

The Commander, 3 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Saka Jimoh, commended the troops for their alertness, professionalism and fighting spirit.

Jimoh urged them to sustain the operational tempo until all bandits and criminal elements operating in the area were neutralised.

He also appreciated the support of law-abiding residents and encouraged them to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.

The commander noted that collaboration between security agencies and communities remained critical to the success of ongoing operations against banditry and other criminal activities.
