9th NASS: Femi Gbajabiamila is Speaker, House of Reps

Femi Gbajabiamila, the candidate endorsed by the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the post of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has emerged winner.

He defeated his co-contesant, Umar Bago.

Gbajabiamila scored 281 votes as against Bago’s 76 votes to emerge the Speaker.

The two legislators who belong to the same party were nominated for the contest following the inauguration of the House of Representatives for the 9th Assembly by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori.

Earlier in the day, the candidate of the APC, Senator Ahmad Lawan, representing Yobe North Senatorial District was sworn in as the Senate President.

The swearing in was carried out by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori.

His swearing-in followed his emergence as the winner of the contest for the seat of the Senate President.

He succeeds Dr. Bukola Saraki, who headed the 8th Senate.

Lawan recorded 79 votes against his rival, Senator Ali Ndume who got 28 votes.

While Lawan is the candidate endorsed by his party, Ndume was endorsed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The election was held following the inauguration of the 9th Senate on Tuesday.

Similarly, the Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, emerged the Deputy Senate President.

He defeated the immediate past occupier of the post, Senator Ike Ekweremadu with 68 votes.

Ekweremadu recorded 37 votes.

Omo-Agege was endorsed by his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Ekweremadu came into the contest in a surprise way, having not shown interest in it since the campaign for the post started.

He was nominated for the post by Senator-elect Chukwuka Utazi.

His nomination was made after that of Omo-Agege.
