The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday declared as winner, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in Zamfara, Bello Matawalle, of the state’s governorship election.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the declaration at a press conference held in Abuja.

The PDP’s other candidates in other positions contested for in the state were also declared winners.

According to the INEC boss, the declaration followed the decision of the Supreme Court which declared that the primaries that saw the emergence of the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidates in the last general election were illegal.

It would be recalled that the Supreme Court on Friday nullified the participation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2019 general election in Zamfara State.

It therefore declared the party with the second highest votes as the winner.

The court ruled: “Candidate other than the first appellant with the highest vote stand elected. A cost of N10 million is awarded against the appellant,” the court ruled.
