Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abayomi Peter Oladipo, has declared that his command has a responsibility towards the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, especially as it concerns the welfare of corps members.

Oladipo made the declaration when he hosted the NYSC management team in Ondo State led by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani at the Command Headquarters, Akure, the state capital.

He recalled his participation in NYSC programme in Imo State during the 1986/87 service year, saying he would not have been where he is today without the scheme.

“Helping NYSC is like helping ourselves because the solid foundation laid by the founding fathers of the noble scheme in which I am a proud beneficiary and ambassador is what has propelled me to where God has placed me today. If not for the scheme which prepared me for the sensitive position I am occupying today, my story would have been different and I appreciate the scheme for re-positioning the future of our teeming Nigerian youths worldwide.

“NYSC has remained a strong and unbroken cord uniting this beautiful country. So, in the natural context, the graduate youths, who despite the mounting pressures from family and loved ones choose to stay in their comfort zones move to other regions to strengthen integration and understudy the differences and similarities of the constituents that made up the country, then the Nigerian Police owe them a duty to protect them from all threats and harms, and this is what we have been doing since the establishment of the scheme close to 51 years ago.”

Earlier in her speech, the state coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani, congratulated the Commissioner of Police on his appointment to oversee the command in Ondo State.

“The CP Sir, I am confident that you will bring your wide and varied experience to bear on the security architecture of Ondo State. The capacity you displayed in previous appointments and assignments will no doubt assist you to a larger extent by ridding the state of criminal elements. The success recorded when you were DCP in charge of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Oyo State some years back laid credence to this.”

Ani said the visit of the NYSC team was to gather intelligence and security support for the corps members serving in the state and those that would be reporting to camp for the 2024 Batch ‘A’ (Stream 1) orientation course.

Responding, the police boss declared that his command had no other job aside protecting the lives and properties of citizens and residents of Nigeria.

He promised to leverage the existing relationships to strengthen the synergy between the Police and NYSC in the Ondo State.

DCP (Operations), Muhammed Rabiu, emphasised on the need for the NYSC management to impress it upon corps members to shun night journeys and break the journeys where necessary.

Ani said that the advice had become the song which the NYSC sang to their ears of the corps members on daily basis.
