President Bola Tinubu has called on the Confederation of African Football, CAF, to investigate and sanction those responsible for the inhuman treatment meted out to the Super Eagles in Libya.

The Super Eagles who were billed for a match against the Libya football team on Tuesday were left stranded at the airport in Libya for over 15 hours, before they eventually pulled out of the match and returned to Nigeria.

Welcoming the players and the officials of the Super Eagles back to Nigeria, President Tinubu decried the inhuman treatment.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the president also commended the proactive coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development in addressing the unfortunate episode and ensuring the safe return of our players.

Tinubu applauded the players for keeping their spirit alive despite the excruciating ordeal in Libya.

The Nigerian leader recognised football’s unifying power in bringing nations and people together and views the treatment of our citizens as unsportsmanlike and inhumane, a stark contrast to the spirit of the game he deeply appreciates.

He fervently called on all lovers of the round-leather game and administrators to unite and work collaboratively to prevent and overcome such incidents in the future.
