President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele, from office with immediate effect.
The announcement was made on Friday in a statement by Willie Bassey, Director, Information Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The SGF office stated that the suspension followed ongoing investigation of Emefiele’s office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
Emefiele, it was revealed, had been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), Mr Folashodun Shonubi.
Shonubi, it was said, would act as the CBN Governor, pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.
“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the CBN Governor, pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms,” the statement reads in part.
