The announcement was made on Monday in a statement made available to FrontPage by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju.

The spokesman said Olawuyi who had been in charge of the garden for over a decade, was attacked in the afternoon by a nine years old male lion when he was feeding them in their den.

He explained that the other members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss but the wild cat had already caused severe fatalities.

“Saddened by this tragic event, the aggressive Lion has been euthanized,” the spokesman said.

FrontPage reports that to euthanize, according Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary means “to kill a sick or injured animal or person by giving them drugs so that they die without pain.”

He said on hearing the sad news, the management team, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, abruptly ended an on-going meeting for an on the spot assessment.

Olarewaju said upon enquiry, the Vice-Chancellor was informed, on arrival, by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, that all first aid and medical efforts to save the life of the victim proved abortive.

The spokesman said the university management had sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, “imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and also has the power to take life.”

He added that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident.

The incident, it was said, had thrown the management, staff, students and the entire campus of the university into mourning.

The university prayed for the repose of the soul of Olawuyi.

The Managing Director of the Zoo, Alhaji Saidu Gwadabe, confirmed the capture of the lion in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Monday.

He said the animal was captured around 7:00 a.m. on Monday by the staff of the Zoo that used to feed it on daily basis.

“The operation was to be conducted after the arrival of some experts from the National Park, Abuja but luckily around 7:00 a.m. today our staff were able to use their expertise to put it back into its cage.

“I am happy to tell you that the escaped lion has finally been captured and taken back to its cage this morning,” he said.

The reinforcement from the National Park, Abuja arrived Kano around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday for the operation.

The escaped lion was said to have killed three goats and an ostrich before moving into the bush within the premises of the zoological garden on Saturday night.

Recall that the lion escaped when rangers were about to put it back into its cage after returning it from the national agricultural show in Nasarawa State.

News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the incident happened around 9 p.m. when the rangers were trying to put it back to its cage after they returned it from the national agricultural show which took place in Nasarawa State.

A source at the zoological garden told NAN that effort was being made to capture the animal which was still within the zoo premises.

Malam Rabiu Lawal, a resident of Zoo Road, told NAN that he had locked up his house until announcement was made of the capture of the lion.

“My entire family members will be indoors even if it will take one month to recover the lion. I have not experienced this kind of fear since I packed into this area more than 15 years,” he said.

NAN reports that residents of the area went indoors earlier than usual to avoid the consequences of an encounter with a loose lion.

As at the time of filing this report armed policemen have been deployed to the area while a search team was trying to capture the lion.

All effort to contact the Managing Director of the Zoological Garden, Alhaji Saidu Gwadabe, failed as his telephone line was not going through.
