Speaking in Cairo,  Egypt at  the sidelines  of the Association  of National Olympics  Committee of Africa, ANOCA, General Assembly, Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, said:  “Sports plays an important  role in International  Relations, fosters unity, builds friendship and develops the youth population.

“Nigeria and Egypt stand to derive a lot of  benefits by going into partnership in youth and sports development. As two pacesetters on the continent, Nigerian  and Egyptian youth can get a lot of mileage if we explore areas of mutual benefits for the growth of our two countries. Youth are the active participants in sports, once they are taken care  of, a better future is assured. This meeting  is quite timely, coming at a time we are preparing  for the Olympics. Sports can be used to conquer Covid-19 as the world  is united to win the scourge through sports.”

In his response,  Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Professor Ashraf Sobhy, said: “We can make a lot of difference if we  deploy sports for  youth empowerment, build bridges of  unity and  enhance social  mobilisation. The potentials of the future lies in our youth, so they must be properly trained to meet the challenges  of a new world order.”

Dare used the opportunity of the meeting to introduce the DEEL programme,  assuring that the two countries could collaborate to make the initiative more beneficial.

Nigerian  ambassador  to Egypt, Nura Abba Rimi, NOC president,  Engr.  Habu Gumel, are also attending the General Assembly.

The minister was recently honoured by ANOCA for his commitment  to the development of Sports in Africa.

He is attending the General Assembly  on the invitation  of ANOCA president, Mr. Mustapha  Berraf.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development,  Mr. Sunday Dare said the data base would soon be created  for the  Nigerian Youth to address unemployment, age cheats and counter falsehood.

Speaking during the sixth edition of Town Hall Meeting  on Friday, the minister reiterated that there were so many  opportunities for jobs, empowerment and  training for the benefit of the youth.

He explained that youths should avail themselves of the stream of opportunities and how to get trained.

“For NYIF, it is important to note that the Fund is for youth  between ages 18-35. Thus if you are older than 35 years you will have difficulties in completing the  application process. From time to time there are minor difficulties in the platform.  We have decided to use a better platform which the federal government used to  recruit people for previous programmes. This platform makes adjustments, has flexible feature and complaints  can be  easily taken care of,” he said.

The minister further stated that “if the application is successful, the youth would undergo another process  of being trained by Entrepreneur Development Institute, EDI, who are certified trainers.”

He assured that there would be a review of the  process of application to train as many people as possible to benefit from  the loan.
