The Senate has confirmed 34 career ambassadors and 30 non-career ambassador nominees.

This followed the presentation and consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs in the Committee of the Whole on Thursday.

President Bola Tinubu’s letter for the confirmation of the ambassadors was read in the Senate on December 4.

Presenting the report, the chairman of the committee, Sen. Sani Bello, said the nominees displayed wide and in-depth knowledge of international diplomacy during the screening,

Those confirmed as career ambassadors are Amb. Nwaobiala Chukwuemeka (Abia), Betso Maimunah Ibrahim (Adamawa), Monica Enebechi (Anambra), Amb. Mohammed Lele (Bauchi), Syndoph Endoni (Bayelsa).

Also confirmed were Amb. Ahmed Monguno (Borno), Amb. Adams Jane Bassey (Cross-River), Amb. Clark-Omeru Alexandra Efe (Delta), Goeffrey Ijiomah Chima David (Ebonyi), Odumah Yvonne Ehinosen (Edo), Amb. Wasa Segun Ige (Edo) and Amb. Adeyemi Adebayo Emmanuel (Ekiti).

Also on the list were Amb. Arewa Esther (Oyo), Amb, Gargadi Joseph John (Plateau), Amb. Luther Ogbomode Ayo-Kalata (Rivers), Danladi Yakubu Nyaku (Taraba) and Bello Dogon-Daji Haliru (Sokoto).

The non-career ambassadors are: Sen. Grace Bent (Adamawa), Sen. Ita Enang (Akwa-Ibom), Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu (Abia), Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu (Anambra), Prof. Mahmud Yakubu (Bauchi), Amb.
Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu (Kogi), Olufemi Pedro (Lagos), Muhammed Ubandoma Aliyu (Nasarawa), Sen. Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo), and Amb. Joseph Olusola lji (Ondo).

Also confirmed were Olufemi Fani-Kayode (Osun), Prof. Isaac Adewole (Osun), Mrs Fatima Florence Ajimobi (Oyo), Mrs Sulola Akande (Oyo), Dr Yakubu Gambo (Plateau), Sen.
However, Sen. Sahabi Ya’u (Zamfara North) raised a constitutional point of order, citing provisions of sections 14(3) and 15(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He said that the sections mandated the observance of federal character principle and promotion of national unity in government appointments.

While commending President Bola Tinubu and the Senate for the confirmation of ambassadorial nominees, Ya’u expressed concern that his state (Zamfara) was not represented on the list of either career or non-career ambassadors.

He described the omission as an apparent oversight and urged that the state be considered in subsequent ambassadorial nominations.

Responding, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, sustained the point of order and assured the chamber that the list before the Senate was not exhaustive.

He explained that Nigeria had many diplomatic missions, including both resident and non-resident postings and that additional ambassadorial nominations would be forwarded to the Senate in due course.

Akpabio further assured that no state would be left out, reiterating the administration’s commitment to the principle of federal character.

He called on the newly confirmed ambassadors to serve Nigeria diligently and leave lasting legacies in their diplomatic assignments.

The Senate commended the Committee on Foreign Affairs for its work on the screening and congratulated the confirmed ambassadors, urging them to project Nigeria’s image positively on the international stage.

The police also recovered 54 ATM cards with a Point of Sale, POS, machine.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Kaduna on Friday.

Hassan said: “On August 27, at about 23:00 hours, following a credible intelligence, police operatives nabbed three suspects involved in ATM Card Swap Fraud, through a well-coordinated operation.”

He said the suspects included Umar Ya’u of Zoo Road, Kano; Abdullahi Bukar of Tudun Wada Kaduna, and Hussaini Sulaiman of Zoo Road, Kano.

He added that the suspects were known for loitering around ATM machines, where they pretended to assist individuals who appeared unfamiliar with operating the machines.

“In doing so, they would deceitfully swap the victims’ ATM cards, allowing them to carry out unauthorised withdrawals.

“54 ATM cards of different banks and a POS machine were recovered from the suspects, which they confessed to getting from defrauding multiple victims across Kano, Kaduna, and Zaria,” he said.

Hassan said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Audu Dabigi assured the public of the command’s continuous commitment towards safeguarding the community.

He also urged the general public to be mindful of unsolicited assistance and to immediately report any suspicious behaviour at ATM points to the police for prompt action.

Kano State government on Saturday said a journalist working with the state-owned Television Station, Abubakar Rimi TV, attached to Government House suffered injuries from metal debris that hit him while in the premises.

This is contained in a statement issued by Director-General, Media and Publicity, Malam Sanusi Bature, in Kano on Saturday.

He said: “For clarity purpose, Naziru Yau, the reporter of the state television station was not hit by any stray bullet.”

He explained that “instead, the reporter sustained injuries from metal debris emanating from an ongoing construction at the Kano State Government House, an area that has been barricaded for caution.”

“We thereby dispel any rumour that had sparked outrage and call for increased safety measures for journalists covering sensitive events,” he said.

“We also need to underscore the importance of accurate reporting and thorough investigation in mitigating misinformation and maintaining public trust.

READ ALSO: Police arrest 195 suspects, rescue 19 abducted victims in Enugu

“The attention of Kano State government has been drawn to a one sided media report on social media revealing that a journalist, with the state own television station, attached to Government House was hit by a stray bullet,” he said.

The incident sparked widespread concern and speculation regarding the safety of journalists covering events at the Government House.

“The affected newsman Mr. Naziru, has expressed gratitude for the prompt medical attention he received and thanked well-wishers for their concern.

“Let me emphasise the need for journalists to remain vigilant while carrying out their duties, especially in environments where construction activities pose potential hazards,” he said.

Bature assured the public of government’s commitment to ensure the safety of all individuals in the state in general.

Meanwhile, the Police Command in Kano State said on Saturday that it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Commissioner of Police Usaini Gumel, said that security personnel were cooperating on the investigation.

He said following the incident, heads of security operatives in the Government House took audit of bullets with their personnel which confirmed that all bullets were intact.

He said in the event that the metal object was confirmed to be bullet particles, chances were that they did not emanate from any security personnel in the Government House, adding that the probe was ongoing.
