*Court adjourns for continuation of trial

The seventh prosecution witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the ongoing alleged money laundering trial against the immediate past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has maintained that the name of the former governor did not appear, either as beneficiary in all documents, or as signatory to any of the exhibits before the court.

While being cross-examined before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court on Thursday, the witness, Olomotane Egoro, subpoenaed from Access Bank, also admitted that no transaction in Exhibit 33(8) mentioned the name, Yahaya Adoza Bello.

He reiterated that the withdrawals between May and December 2022, which were mentioned during his examination-in-chief, were within the cash withdrawal threshold of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

On the issue of suspicious transactions said to have been reported to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, the Access Bank official said not all cash withdrawals by one Siyaka Yakubu were suspicious.

“My testimony is the pattern of withdrawals by the customer,” he told the court.

The defendant’s counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, asked, “So, the outflow that was transferred by Siaka to any person in Exhibit 33(8) will not amount to Suspicious Transaction, ST.

“For example, the N20 million for the supply of education materials will not qualify as suspicious transaction?”

“No my lord, it won’t,” the witness responded.

“So, that will naturally go for all other outflows for which reasons or purposes were given?” the defendant’s counsel asked.

“My lord, it is not all cash withdrawals that are suspicious and not all transfers that are suspicious or illegal,” the witness said.

He also agreed that he did not know the business relationship between the two companies mentioned in some outflows from October to December 2022, and that he did not also know the purpose of the transactions.

After a brief recess, Justice Emeka Nwite said the court admitted the CTC of proceedings before Justice Obiora Egwuatu as Exhibit 35(D-2).

The Access Bank compliance officer was then told to confirm Exhibit 34(1) and Exhibit 34(2) as Kogi Government House Account Opening Package and Government House Administration Account, respectively, which he did.

He also admitted that he was not the relationship manager, especially on Exhibit 34(2), adding that he was not also familiar with the workings of the Kogi State Government House.

Looking at Exhibit 34(1), the witness confirmed that the name ‘Aminu Jimoh Olanrewaju,’ appeared as one of the signatories to the account.

“Confirm if Aminu Jimoh Olanrewaju is described as Director of Account,” the defendant’s counsel told the witness.

“Yes, he is described as Director of Account,” he responded.

He also confirmed that all the withdrawals in Exhibit 34(2), in tranches of N10 million each, made by Aminu Jimoh Olanrewaju, did not exceed the limit of cash withdrawal set by the CBN.

This, he admitted, was the same for the cash withdrawals by Abdulsalam Hudu in Exhibit 34(2).

“Go through exhibit 34(2), which you tendered and see if the name of the defendant, Yahaya Adoza Bello, appears in any of the column as a beneficiary,” Daudu SAN told the witness.

The banker confirmed that the name of the former governor appeared nowhere in the Exhibit.

He also admitted that the former governor was not a signatory in Exhibit 34(1).

The witness was then told to look at the account opening package and statement of account of E-Traders International Limited, from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2022, domiciled at Maraba branch of Access Bank.

He gave the signatories as Abdullahi Jamilu and Salisu Abdulmajeed, saying the occupation recorded against both names was “sale of system and appliances.”

On certain multiple transactions made up of withdrawals and deposits by Abdullahi Jamilu, the witness agreed that as a signatory to the account, the customer, Jamilu, had a right to transact.

He also agreed that he did not know the purpose of the transactions except as stated in the column of the transaction.

The prosecution counsel, Kayode Enitan, SAN, thereafter called its eighth witness, Gabriel Ochoche, a staff of First City Monument Bank, FCMB.

He was given Exhibit 37 to confirm that it covered the period: 29th June, 2021 to 31st December, 2024, which he did.

The witness took the court through the inflows and outflows on the accounts of Keyless Nature Limited and Kunfayakun Global Business Enterprise.

He confirmed multiple transactions between Eja Dams Essence Limited and Kunfayakun, dated 18th February, 2022.

After his examination, the Defendant’s Counsel said he needed to go through the evidence before he could cross-examine the eighth witness.

Prosecution counsel, Kemi Pinheiro SAN, objected, claiming that the proof of evidence had been given to the defence team over two years ago.

Justice Nwite, however, said he asked if the learned silk could go on with cross-examination because he was totally exhausted.

That was at about 3 p.m.

The court sitting began after 9 a.m.

“I worked during vacation. So adjournment is at the court instance just like yesterday. To be honest with you, haven’t we tried? Taking the long examination-in-chief of the PW-7, the cross examination and the evidence-in-chief of the PW8,” the judge said.

“Really, my lord is trying and very hardworking sir. My lord, let it be on record that the prosecution, the EFCC, has never sought an adjournment,” Pinheiro responded.

Justice Nwite thereafter adjourned the case to March 3 and 9, 2026 for continuation of trial.

The Budget Office of the Federation has reaffirmed the integrity of Nigeria’s newly enacted Tax Reform Acts, cautioning against what it described as governance by speculation and unverified claims following allegations of post-passage alterations.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director-General, Tanimu Yakubu, the Budget Office

Budget Office said it had taken note of concerns raised by the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives, stressing that the sanctity of the law was central to constitutional democracy and not a mere procedural formality.

According to the Office, any suggestion that a law could be altered after debate, passage, authentication, and presidential assent without due process would strike at the core of the Republic and undermine citizens’ right to be governed by transparent and stable laws.

However, it warned that democratic integrity was also endangered by the careless amplification of unverified claims.

“A nation cannot be governed by insinuation or sustained on circulating documents of uncertain origin,” the statement noted, adding that public confidence, once shaken by speculation, was often difficult to restore.

The Budget Office emphasized that both government and citizens shared a common interest in truth, clarity, and due process, noting that public finance depended heavily on trust in the legality and clarity of fiscal laws.

It said it welcomed the decision of the National Assembly to investigate the allegations, describing institutional inquiry, not conjecture as the appropriate response to claims of illegality.

On public access to the law, the Office agreed that Nigerians and the business community were entitled to clear and authoritative texts of all laws they are required to obey.

It clarified, however, that the authenticity of legislation is determined by certified legislative records and official publication processes, not by informal or viral reproductions.

The statement also underscored the importance of separation of powers, warning that claims suggesting Nigeria was being governed by “fake laws,” if not backed by established facts, risk eroding confidence in democratic institutions.

It also stressed that legislative scrutiny should not be dismissed by the executive, noting that oversight was a constitutional duty, not an act of hostility.

From a fiscal perspective, the Budget Office said legal certainty was essential for revenue projections, macroeconomic stability, budget credibility, and investor confidence.

It stated that while it was not the custodian of legislative records, it maintained that uncertainty around operative tax provisions directly affected economic planning.

To restore confidence, the Office proposed a set of measures, including the publication of verified reference texts in a single public repository, orderly access to Certified True Copies for stakeholders, clear public explanations where discrepancies are alleged, and strict alignment of all implementing regulations with authenticated legal texts.

Addressing calls for suspension of the tax reforms, the Budget Office cautioned against allowing prudence to slide into paralysis.

It argued that properly implemented tax reform was necessary to reduce dependence on borrowing and inflationary financing, while easing indirect burdens on vulnerable citizens.

“Where clarification is required, it must be provided; where correction is required, it must be effected; where investigation is required, it must proceed,” the statement reads, adding that governance and reform should not be stalled by unresolved conjecture.

The Office concluded by describing taxation as a democratic covenant that binds citizens and the state, insisting that compliance depends on transparency and trust.

It called on political actors to protect institutions as much as positions, urging citizens and businesses to rely on verified sources and resist the spread of unauthenticated information.

Yakubu reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to fiscal transparency, institutional integrity, and reforms that advance national prosperity while safeguarding citizens’ rights.

Dan Agbese

There are two things I avoid when people I adore die: I don’t write tributes and I avoid their burial. Twice in the last few years I have broken the second one: Attended their burials. The first was for my father-in-law, Alhaji Suleiman Yusuf, who is better known as Salam Salam. The second was that of my brother-in-law, Justice Adegboye Gbolagunte, who I affectionately call Chief Justice (CJ). But I never wrote even a single line about them. Because I really didn’t know where to start from.

Now that my greatest mentor in journalism, who I describe as a boss and a friend, Dan Agbese, is gone, I am being forced to break both the first and the second. My dilemma in breaking the first of the things I avoid now is: Where do I start from? Not when just a few days before Oga Dan died I still spoke affectionately about the four Directors of Newswatch magazine who shaped my journalism career: Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Mohammed (who I still keep in touch with), Soji Akinrinade (we jam once in a while on WhatsApp), and Agbese. Without them, I am not sure I would have had such a solid foundation in journalism.

But I must confess that Oga Dan did more than the others did. And that was because at the time I returned to Newswatch after my youth service, he was overseeing the Back of the Book section of the magazine. And I was more or less the Sports Editor after the death of Kayode Olaokun, who encouraged me to chase Taiwo Yusuf, who is now Taiwo Oladipo.

Beyond my beat on the Sports Desk, I was also looking into World News and the Security Desk, where Janet Afolabi, the CNN award winning journalist, who is now the Olori (Queen) of Apomu in Osun State, was firmly in charge.

I learnt so many things from Oga Dan in the years I spent in Newswatch. One was humility. He carries his bag, newspapers, and other stuff he brings to the office himself. It is only when it seems too much that you will see his driver or office assistant assist him. For other staff, it was a no, no. I took that from him.

And in terms of the real work itself, he has a way of pushing you beyond what you assumed was your limit. I remember my first Cover Story for Newswatch. It was a Sports story. And that was the week Olaokun died. The gangling (that’s what Oga Dan called him) Olaokun had all the materials we had gathered for the Cover with him and was on his way to the office on a Monday morning to defend the story at the Editorial Board meeting when he was knocked down by a motorcyclist riding one-way.

After we discovered what happened on a Tuesday, with production scheduled for Thursday, the burden to write the Cover fell on me. How I recovered from the shock of Olaokun’s death to write that story was the effort of Oga Dan who calmed me down. In fact, when Olaokun’s family opted to bury him before we concluded production that week, the Directors of Newswatch prevailed on them to hold on until the Friday of that week, providing the vehicle for the transportation of the corpse.

From then on, we forged a bond that remained unbroken. I still remember the Cover I anchored on late Chief Bola Ige as the Minister of Power when he failed to fulfil his promise of providing 24 hours power supply to Nigerians within six months or a maximum of one year in office. We waited for it to be one year before we took him on. It was the last I did before leaving. The Editorial Board had decided on an entirely different Cover, which some of us the young reporters felt was not going to do well in the market. I led a protest team to his office. I expressed our reservations on the proposed Cover. He asked one question: Why are you convinced of the choice of this Cover? I marshalled the points. Then he told me: If you are going to anchor it, then it will go as Cover. And it did.

With Oga Dan, scolding in abrasive manners is completely out of it. You will only get what we called then: Love letter. I recall a trip I took to Abuja for a Cover. By the time I got to Abuja, I had taken ill. I did a very bad job with the Cover. And I got a Love Letter. But that Lover Letter is not for when you don’t do well alone. When you perform well, you get it also. I remember his cursive writing on his office memo pad. I still have a couple of them in my folder.

Compassion is at the top of his good qualities. On the badly written Cover when I travelled to Abuja, as soon as I returned and he saw me, he apologised for the Love Letter seeing that I looked ill. To the company clinic he sent me.

He also suffers nothing, including his personal resources, when it comes to getting stories out. His nose for stories is unquantifiable. I remember as the Defence Correspondent when I had to go to Liberia when our troops were enforcing peace in that country. A day before we were to depart, the Accounts Department did not make provisions for the trip. He saw me in the office and asked what I was still doing around. I said no money. He took me to his office, scribbled his house address on his memo pad and dispatched me to meet his wife for what he described as little: $200. That was how I made the trip. He dipped his hands into his pocket on other occasions too.

Indeed, we were so close that I couldn’t tell him the truth when I was leaving for PUNCH. Though when I initially resigned, it was to do something else outside of journalism, but by the time he called me, Azu Ishiekewene had ensured I couldn’t run away from the job he offered me on the Saturday Desk of PUNCH. So when he called me to ask what my plan was, I told him: I wanted to go manage the companies my father, who died a few weeks before I turned in my resignation letter, left behind. Indeed, the late Commissioner of Police, CP David Ayodeji Sunday Oladipo, left three companies for me and my older ones to manage: Three boys who were still in school.

After I left Newswatch, I kept in touch with him and others. We still meet in places he delivered lectures, at functions of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), and others. And the meeting had always been warm.

For the relationship we shared, I am going to break my second avoidance when closely loved ones die: I will be at his funeral.

A good man has gone. A mentor of mentors. A columnist who couldn’t be ignored. And a news man par excellence. He packed all and more. He was a man that couldn’t be ignored.

Rest in peace, Sir.

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday in Abuja, swore in the sixth substantive chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN).

At the ceremony held at the State House Council Chamber, President Tinubu urged the new INEC chairman to serve with integrity and beyond reproach.

“Your nomination and the subsequent confirmation by the Senate are a testament to your capacity and the confidence reposed in you by both the executive and the legislative arms of government.

“This significant achievement marks the beginning of a challenging, yet rewarding journey, and I trust that you will approach your responsibility with the highest level of integrity, dedication and patriotism,” the president said.

President Tinubu noted that the country had been on a path of democratic governance and learning since 1999, with notable achievements in the strengthening of various institutions.

“Our democracy has come a long way in 25 years. We have consolidated and strengthened our democratic institutions, particularly in electoral systems, through innovations and reforms.

“We have learned a great deal along the way and have improved significantly from where we were many years ago. We must now remain committed to the principles that underpin democracy in a complex and multifaceted society.

“The electoral process is a vital part of a democracy that grants the people the exclusive right to choose their leaders and shape their future. To ensure that our democracy continues to flourish, the integrity of our electoral process must be beyond reproach,” he added.

President Tinubu stated that the governorship election on November 8, 2025, in Anambra State will serve as a litmus test for the new leadership of the electoral commission.

“It is important that our elections are free, fair and credible. We must consistently improve our electoral process, addressing the challenges of yesterday and innovating for today and tomorrow.

“To maintain public trust in the election, electoral integrity must be protected. All aspects of the process – from registration to campaigning, the media access, voting and counting should be transparent, non–violent and credible.

“No electoral system is flawless, but since elections are vital to a nation’s future, it is essential to continually strengthen electoral institutions, ensuring that they are robust, resilient and safeguarded against artificial setback.

“I therefore charge you, Prof Amupitan, as you take on this important assignment to protect the integrity of our electoral process and strengthen the institutional capacity of INEC.”

The swearing-in ceremony follows the Senate’s confirmation of the INEC chairman’s nomination on October 16.

Amupitan succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC chairman ran from 2015 to 2025.

The 58-year-old academic outlined his plans to reform Nigeria’s electoral system, strengthen institutional independence, and rebuild public trust in the commission at the screening.

The new INEC chairman will assume office immediately.
