Russian expert on Saturday said Wuhan’s Huanan seafood market may have made it possible for the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) to spread, it did not mean the virus originated there.

“There is no evidence that the virus originated there’’ but hypothetically, there are all conditions for the spread of the virus there,“ Vladimir Dedkov, a member of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) expert team, was quoted as saying by Sputnik.

The seafood market was linked to an early cluster of COVID-19 cases, but scientists are yet to come to an unequivocal conclusion regarding the role it played in the contagion.

Dedkov also refuted the theory of a virus leakage while visiting the Wuhan Institute of Virology along with nine other WHO experts on Wednesday.

“Of course, it was important for our mission to visit this facility, talk to our colleagues and see how everything is organised there,’’ the expert said.

“The laboratory is perfectly equipped.

“It is hard for me to imagine that something could have leaked from there,’’ he added.

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has recovered from coronavirus after testing negative for the disease.

Dr Makut Macham, Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Jos.

Lalong had gone into isolation on December 17 after testing positive for the dreaded virus.

“One week after the governor tested positive to the virus, he is now free of the disease after his latest test result came out negative.

“The governor’s negative status was communicated to him on Wednesday night.

“Lalong, who has been in isolation since December 17 appreciated God for the speedy recovery and thanked the people of the state, his friends and associates all over the country for praying for him,” Macham said.

He quoted the governor as advising residents to observe safety protocols put in place to curb the spread of the disease.

“Having contracted the virus and undergone treatment myself, I wish to reiterate that COVID-19 is not a death sentence as early detection helps to address it and reduce chances of death.

“We should not stigmatise against anyone who tests positive or is suspected of having the disease.

“Rather, such people should serve as motivation for others to voluntarily test in order to improve the safety of all,” Lalong said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the mandate of the Presidential Task Force, PTF, on COVID-19 “for a further period till the end of March, 2021 bearing in mind the new surge in the number of cases and the bid for vaccines.”

The president disclosed this Tuesday in Abuja while receiving the End-of-Year Report of the task force.

According to President Buhari, “recent reports reaching me indicate that Nigeria is now facing a rise in confirmed COVID-19 cases nationwide which is similar to the second wave of infections occurring in other countries across the world.

“New epicentres have been identified and the nation cannot afford to lose the gains of the last nine months. I have critically evaluated the situation and remain convinced that urgent measures have to be taken to halt the spread and the attendant fatalities.

“Closely associated with the foregoing is the need to speedily and strategically access and administer the COVID vaccine in a safe, effective and timely manner. This is an important obligation that we owe Nigerians as we go into year 2021 and it must be carried out through an efficient machinery.”

The president added that “the nation is clearly in a perilous situation given the virulent nature of this second wave and we must act decisively to protect our people. I therefore urge all sub-national entities, traditional rulers, religious and leaders of thought to collaborate with the PTF by taking up the responsibility for risk communication and community engagement at all levels. Now is the time for collective efforts to be intensified.

“As the festive season approaches, I urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and stay safe. Non-essential trips and large social gatherings should be avoided or shelved completely.”

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, has said that the federal government is substantially ready for a successful COVID-19 vaccination to save lives of citizens.

Ehanire made this declaration on Monday in Abuja while briefing the Senate leadership on the federal government’s plans to procure COVID-19 vaccines worth N400 billion for citizens.

The minister noted that the country which had successfully fought polio, would use the same storage facilities (cold chains) to store the COVID-19 vaccines.

He urged the Senate to have confidence in the plan for COVID-19 vaccine campaign.

He said that about N400 billion would be required for the vaccination of 70 per cent of Nigeria’s 211 million population, at eight dollars per person.

According to him, N156 billion would be needed in 2021 and N200 billion in 2022.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan expressed doubt over the ability of the Federal Ministry of Health to effectively store and distribute the COVID-19 vaccines when they arrive in the country.

Lawan said the National Assembly was ready to support the funding of adequate vaccines to save Nigerians.

He noted that officials of the Ministry of Health must convince the parliament that they had adequate facilities and manpower to protect the preventive substance.

“I have not been convinced with your presentation that we are ready to bring in the vaccines.

“You have to do much more to convince me that we are ready,” he added.
