Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved an additional ₦50,000 to state workers’ salaries for the month of May as part of efforts to cushion the prevailing economic hardship, particularly the impact of rising fuel prices.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the announcement at the 2026 Workers Day celebration themed “Insecurity, Poverty: Bane of Decent Work”, held on Friday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

He reiterated that the intervention, which would be reviewed, underscored his administration’s resolve to ensure that Lagos remained a functional city and one that worked for its residents, especially the workforce that drove its growth and development.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, emphasised that the welfare of workers remained central to his administration’s agenda, adding that the government would continue to deploy sustained support measures to ease economic pressures and improve living conditions.

“Our job has always been to make sure that the city we are building is also a city that works for you. We know that prices of fuel are rising. We know we did not cause the war in Iran, but we are feeling its impact. So this government has made the decision that for this May, there will be an additional ₦50,000 for every worker in Lagos State, irrespective of grades—₦50,000 across the board,” he said.

He further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing structural, policy, and moral challenges affecting the workforce, noting that the realities faced by workers require deliberate and measurable action rather than rhetoric.

According to him, the administration has spent the past seven years systematically tackling these challenges through targeted interventions aimed at improving welfare, dignity, and productivity.

He cited issues such as long commuting hours, housing affordability, and delayed retirement benefits as structural and moral concerns being addressed through policy reforms.

Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed that public servants were regarded not as a budget line or political bloc, but as the living infrastructure of Lagos State.

He also highlighted key reforms and investments across sectors, including the implementation of the highest minimum wage in the country, expansion of healthcare coverage through the Lagos State Health Management Authority, and the introduction of the “Ilera Eko Easy Pay system” to ease health insurance payments for residents.

On pensions, he said the Lagos State Pension Commission had intensified timely payments, disbursing over N1 billion to retirees while introducing free first-year post-service healthcare and pre-retirement support initiatives.

He further restated the administration’s commitment to dignifying senior civil servants through the provision of official vehicles, describing it as part of deliberate efforts to improve efficiency and living standards.

The governor also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, for their constructive engagement, noting that while discussions might not always be seamless, the government remained committed to open dialogue and sustained collaboration with labour unions.

The national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has congratulated all the workers in the country on the occasion of the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.

He commended their resilience, patriotism, and unwavering contributions to Nigeria’s growth and development.

In a statement signed by Abimbola Tooki, his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, to mark the occasion, Professor Yilwatda paid glowing tribute to Nigerian workers across all sectors of the economy, noting that their sacrifices, diligence, and commitment remained the backbone of national progress.

He particularly acknowledged the endurance and understanding demonstrated by workers in the face of current economic realities, describing their perseverance as a testament to the strength and character of the Nigerian people.

The APC national chairman assured workers that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was deeply committed to promoting policies and programmes that prioritized the welfare, dignity, and prosperity of the Nigerian workforce.

He emphasized that the president remained a worker-friendly leader who understood the central role of labour in nation-building.

Yilwatda further noted that the ongoing economic reforms introduced by the current administration were critical and inevitable steps toward repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth and long-term prosperity.

He explained that key policy measures, including the removal of fuel subsidy, unification of the foreign exchange system, increased investment in infrastructure, expansion of social intervention programmes, and a renewed focus on industrialization, were aimed at addressing longstanding structural challenges within the economy.

According to him, these reforms are designed to stimulate productivity, enhance economic stability, attract both local and foreign investments, and create more opportunities for employment and wealth creation.

While acknowledging that the transition might present short-term challenges, he assured that the government was implementing targeted interventions to cushion the effects and ensure that the gains of the reforms were broadly shared among Nigerians.

The APC chairman reiterated that the sacrifices being made by workers today were not in vain, expressing confidence that the ongoing reforms would ultimately lead to a more prosperous, inclusive, and resilient economy that benefits all citizens.

He called on Nigerian workers to remain steadfast, hopeful, and united in their support for the nation’s development agenda, stressing that collective effort and shared commitment are essential to achieving the Nigeria of everyone’s aspiration.

Yilwatda wished all Nigerian workers a happy and fulfilling Workers’ Day celebration, praying for continued strength, progress, and prosperity for them and their families.

By BOSEDE OLUSOLA-OBASA

I trust your week is going well. I am taking a break this week from the series on personal habits audit and mastery, to focus on a pertinent issue in view of the upcoming May Day commemoration. Call this my Workers’ Day gift, and you won’t be wrong. I hope this gets to a worker who may require intervention on this subject matter.

Do you know how best to handle those recurring moments of ‘feeling used’ by your boss, superior or the organisation? Do you know how to ascertain the validity of your feelings without sentiments? How do you ensure that things turn in your favour and not against you in the end? These and others are essential questions to answer when seeking help. I will attempt to answer some questions in today’s piece. Additionally, you can watch the new video on this topic that I recently recorded and uploaded on RCV Character YouTube channel. Now let’s create solutions here.

‘Feeling used’ because you are useful is more common than many Nigerian workers admit. It typically involves high performers who often become “go-to” persons on a team. Over time, their contributions quietly turn into exploitation if not managed with clarity and boundaries.

What business owners need to understand is that creating this ‘feeling of being used’ has a negative effect on the brand as much as it does on individual team members. At the least, the business suffers a tainted reputation. I am aware that most times, this feeling doesn’t emanate from a generally-publicised leadership or corporate culture. It thrives in secrecy and under weak human resources management structures, especially where leaders are allowed to do as they please with subordinates.

I strongly agree with the wise saying: “It is better to be used and become useful than to be unused and become useless.” I will, however, add that you need to check if you are truly being used towards becoming more useful, or being abused towards ultimately becoming useless! In both scenarios, ‘the user’s’ intention is as critical as the willingness of ‘the used’.

That said, let me address the subordinate in the picture, before concluding that you are being used, pause and evaluate the validity of your feelings. Sometimes your perceptions need a reality check to distinguish between genuine concerns and emotional reactions.

This is a sensitive matter that requires a holistic, not frivolous approach to understanding and managing the feeling of being used. You need a trusted framework to guide you through the journey from self-reflection and empowerment.

The following will help you assess whether your feelings are grounded in reality or influenced by other factors. This calm, introspective approach leads to a clear understanding. Now, take a moment to do an honest self-reflection with the guides I provided below:

General Possibility Factcheck if ‘Feeling Used’ at work:

The feeling could be true: be ready to acknowledge the possibility.

The feeling could be fake: your feelings may not be valid after all.

The feeling may be overrated: it doesn’t add up to expectations.

The feeling could be harmless: just nudging you to consider alternative perspectives.

The feeling might be a desire for more: payment, acknowledgement or recognition based on your confidence in your worth, value and contributions.

The feeling may have been triggered by a growing lack of capacity to match demands: it could be a reflection of a growing gap between job demands and your current capacity.

The feeling may have been instigated by other people’s views: this is when external feedback sparks the thought.

It might just be a feeling that won’t go away: persistent but unverified.

As psychologist Daniel Kahneman observed, “Nothing in life is as important as you think it is while you are thinking about it.” Emotions are real, but they need to be examined, not blindly obeyed.

The next step to take is to critically look at your regular experience over the months, quarters or years at work. When a collection of the underlisted signs becomes a pattern rather than isolated incidents, it signals a serious concern that deserves your attention and action. At that point, I urge you to trust what you CONSISTENTLY observe.

Watch for these red flags:

You repeatedly get assigned to do domestic, menial or unrelated tasks.

You are made to put in extra efforts that never count in work performance reviews.

These tasks are generally assigned verbally and seldom have official threads to trace.

Your workload on those non-essentials is affecting your core responsibilities.

Your excessive extra hours go with no compensation or relief.

You lack recognition, reward, or growth opportunities for these tasks.

You suffer demeaning communication or verbal disrespect whenever there’s any slip in delivering on these works.

Your involvement with these tasks already has a negative impact on your health or relationships.

These assignments offer no pathway to promotion or scaling despite consistent delivery.

You feel a growing sense of being stuck whenever it is compared to your actual career goals.

According to Gallup, employees who feel undervalued are significantly more likely to disengage and underperform. This is not just personal; it affects organisational outcomes.

Do these, if a clear pattern of abuse exists.

When you have confirmed that the feeling of being used is valid and consistent, it’s time to take action:

*Use the ‘Feeling Used’ mode as a signal for growth and positive change. Every challenge is an opportunity to strengthen your self-awareness and build a more fulfilling path forward. You have the power to transform difficult experiences into stepping stones for a better future.

* Build your capacity, sometimes growth is the real next step, not escape. Ensure you are truly worth much more on the job.

*Start documenting your contributions and communications if you have not been doing that; facts create clarity.

*Speak up respectfully, address concerns calmly and clearly. Don’t play emotional games; focus on outcomes.

*Seek independent counsel to get objective advice from trusted sources.

*Set healthy boundaries to protect your well-being and preserve your energy for what truly matters. Being reliable should not mean being limitless.

*Seek support when needed. You deserve respect and guidance from those who care about you.

*Anticipate a positive change as time takes its toll.

*Prepare your mind to consider quitting as a last resort. If there are no changes. Staying in a damaging environment is not loyalty; it is self-neglect.

As Maya Angelou said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

Your usefulness is an asset; it should never be used to hurt you; your dignity is non-negotiable. Do not shrink your value to fit a system that refuses to recognise it. At the same time, ensure your expectations are matched by performance and growth.

Remember to mind your character and enjoy the rest of the week.

Help is on the way for suffering Nigerian workers and the masses, the governor of Akwa Ibom State and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Udom Emmanuel, has assured.

Udom gave the assurance on the occasion of this year’s Workers’ Day which is being celebrated today.

In a goodwill message to Nigerian workers released on his behalf by Mr. Bola Bolawole, spokesperson of the Udom Emmanuel Presidential Campaign Council, Emmanuel said the suffering of Nigerian workers had not gone unnoticed and their cries for help had not gone unheard.

“Tell Nigerian workers, indeed all Nigerians, that help is on the way. I have been moved by the cries of our people to join the presidential race.

“My passion is to bring my capacity and capability to bear on the economic life of this country to turn around a comatose economy to the benefit of all Nigerians.

“I am trained. I am tested. I understand the economy. I know the various languages it responds to. My track record in both the private and public sector bears me out.

“I promise Nigerian workers that I as president of this great country will partner with them to turn the economy around.

“Under my administration, workers will get their due. They will occupy a prime place in my consideration of policies and programmes.”

Udom Emmanuel called on Nigerian workers to stop agonising and bemoaning their situation and circumstance but should henceforth organize behind a man who could turn poverty into prosperity and restore the country’s lost glory.

His words: “I know what to do to arrest the slide in the value of the Naira, to escape the debt trap that is strangulating the economy, to create jobs, and bring about a vast improvement in the decrepit state of infrastructure within the shortest possible time.

“If only with the success I have recorded with Ibom Air, where the country as a whole has failed, you know I have capacity and capability.

“If only with the fact that Akwa Ibom now manufactures and exports syringes overseas, you know I have the capacity to stop Nigeria’s over-reliance on oil and diversify the economy.

“If only with the fact that little Akwa Ibom is second only to Lagos State in attracting Foreign Direct Investment, you know that I know how to attract investment into Nigeria.

“Workers of Nigeria, stop agonizing! Organize and partner with a man who has the passion to make Nigeria great again.

“Udom Gabriel Emmanuel will wipe your tears.

“I wish you a happy workers day even as I extend my hand of fellowship to you.

“Grab it! And together we shall make Nigeria great again!

“May God help us all!”

As workers across the world celebrate International Workers’ Day, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged Nigerian workers, especially public and private workers in the state to remain productive and committed to carrying out their duties.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, in commemoration of the Year 2022 International Workers’ Day, described workers as the lifeblood of the economy.

He commended all the workers in the state for their patience, strength, passion and commitment to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole, urging them not to relent in their positive contributions to the economy.

“Happy Workers’ Day to all our committed and hardworking workers in the public and private sectors. We appreciate your contributions; they are indeed the lifeblood of our economy because without the contributions of the workers, no government can achieve its dream.

“Nigerian workers are the fabric that makes up the society as a result of their tireless contributions to the socio-economic development of the country. We appreciate all workers, both in the public and private sectors for their patience, strength and commitment to the growth and development of our dear Lagos State and Nigeria.

“As we join the rest of the world today, to celebrate International Workers’ Day, I implore all workers, especially those in Lagos State to remain productive and committed to duty. We must all join hands together to take Lagos to greater heights in line with our administration’s Greater Lagos agenda.

“As a government, we will continue to make the welfare of workers our priority and ensure that we play our role in creating a good working environment for workers in the state. I congratulate all our workers on the 2022 International Workers’ Day,” says Sanwo-Olu.

The federal government has declared Monday May 2 and Tuesday May 3, as public holidays to mark the 2022 Workers Day and Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Shuaib Belgore, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

According to him, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made the declaration on behalf of the federal government.

The minister congratulated workers across the country on their celebration.

He also commended them for their hard work, diligence and sacrifice, saying that their efforts were largely responsible for the greatness of the country and the respect Nigeria commanded in the comity of nations.

“Labour is the very essence of humanity. We are alive because we work and only the dead is incapable of working.”

Aregbesola, therefore, enjoined them to imbibe the culture of productivity, adding that the end of work was productivity.

“It is productivity that leads to satisfactory provision of goods and services and wealth creation.

“It is, therefore, the path to national and individual prosperity.”

He, however, urged them to raise the bar of their trade in line with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration’s drive to rev up the vehicle of governance and make all the people of Nigeria derive maximum benefit.

The minister also congratulated all Muslims for the successful completion of the Holy month of Ramadan.

Aregbesola called on all Muslims to imbibe and practice the virtues of kindness, love, tolerance, peace, self-denial, sacrifice and good neighbourliness, as exemplified by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).

“The self-restrain, self-denial, sacrifice and deep spiritual consciousness that accompanied the fasting period should not end but be maintained and improved upon, to be a better person and true worshipper.”

The minister expressed confidence that the security challenges in some parts of the country would soon be a thing of the past.

He added that the government was putting determined efforts and all necessary measures in place for Nigerians to enjoy unfettered peace all round.

Aregbesola assured Nigerians that the administration of President Buhari was fully committed to the security of life and property of every citizen and foreigners alike.

He commended all security agencies for the successes recorded in the fight against criminals across the country and the peace that had returned to the formerly embattled places.

He urged Nigerians to be part of the nation’s security architecture by being vigilant and reporting suspicious individuals and activities to law enforcement agencies nearest to them.

He, however, remindeđ Nigerians that security was everybody’s responsibility and should not be left in the hands of the government alone.

Aregbesola wished all Muslims a happy Eid-el-Fitr celebration and prayed that the peace, blessings and favours of Allah be with them all.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has praised Nigerian workers for their steadfastness and commitment to the growth of Nigeria, despite tough working conditions.

In a goodwill message to Nigerian workers, the party commended them for carrying on as true heroes of the nation, amid rising insecurity and economic hardship, occasioned by years of insensitive leadership.

A statement released by the National Publicity Secretary of ADC, Yemi Kolapo, said, “If Nigerian workers, especially the health workers on the frontline of the intense struggle to contain the spread of COVID-19 and minimise fatalities, and others in the line of essential services, had refused to risk their lives in the face of clear uncertainties, blaming them would have been difficult.

“When workers do not earn a living wage, and there is no guarantee that their dependants would not be left in abject poverty and sorrow should they pay the ultimate price, there will always be a temptation to ignore duty calls. But our health workers have demonstrated, in this instance, that they are more committed to Nigeria than those they have elected as captains of the ship.

“They abandoned their families and comfort zones for the battlefront while telling the rest of us to stay safe at home. They are aware that, like in a war situation, there is no strict assurance of returning unscathed, and that in a country, where government officials have performed more as rulers than leaders over the years, the consequences are dicey. But they have continued to lead the fight even when overall conditions of service for workers have been made worse by the many economic goofs of the ruling government. For this, we celebrate them as the indisputable heroes of our nation.”

While recognising Nigerian workers as the tripod supporting the Nigerian economy against all odds, the party urged the Federal Government to urgently fulfill its part of pending agreements with different categories of workers in Nigeria and ensure that workers earn decent wages that could mitigate the effects of hunger in the land.

The ADC, however, commended the security agencies for stepping up their vigilance during the lockdown period but added that they needed to do more to truly protect both vulnerable and other citizens.

“The President Muhammadu Buhari administration should also map out clear strategies to manage an unavoidable post-Covid-19 socio-economic crisis, with distinct implementation plans. There must also be conscious efforts to make the business environment bearable for Small and Medium Enterprises, which are the main engines of growth for economies worldwide,” the party said.

The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has appealed to government at all levels to make the welfare of workers a priority to cushion the hardship occasioned by the coronavirus lockdown.

Mr Leonard Nkah, Ebonyi NLC chairman, made the appeal in Abakaliki on Friday in a message to workers in the state.

According to him, prioritising welfare of workers would enhance their living standards and support their families at this period of social and economic stress caused by COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that timely payment of salaries, remunerations and other palliatives would serve as boosts to enable them observe all precautionary guidelines, regulations and directives that would make them stay safe from the scourge.

He said: “I appeal to the governments at all levels to kindly attend to the workers needs as a matter of urgency.

“Let them pay salaries and remunerations with every other package as palliative to the workers and the people to help them observe the guidelines such as the lockdown, sit-at-home directive, use of face masks and regular hand washing.

“As a leader who feels the pulse of the people, I can state unequivocally that workers are hungry and in dire need of food.

“That, it is only the provisions of food and welfare packages and the availability of such will help both the workers and the government achieve a successful fight against the pandemic and win this war threatening our health and life.”

Nkah urged workers to be resilient in the face of the pandemic, appealing to them to partner government and other non-state actors in the fight against the deadly virus.

“All hands must be on deck and no one should feel less concerned as injury to one, is injury to all.

“Even if you don’t have any other thing to contribute, I want you to be all out in enlightenment campaigns to help those who don’t really understand what we are facing to really understand and comply with every regulation, ” he said.

The labour leader described the 2020 Workers’ Day as ‘unique’ because it was devoid of its usual fanfare and celebration due to the lockdown brought by the novel coronavirus.

He said: “It is with a heart full of burden that I write this message which is unlike any other I’ve ever delivered as a labour leader or experienced in our history.

“This year’s May Day is undoubtedly without the normal gatherings, protocols and procedures worldwide and even the blind knows why.

“The global health pandemic of the novel coronavirus has not only changed the world and everything in it as we have known it, it also threatens to make a quick and abrupt end of both people and labour.

“Economies are crashing like pack of cards with reckless abandon and the rulers of nations are helplessly powerless in the face of an unseen killer agent; the enemy that will destroy everything if not properly tackled, arrested and curbed.

“It would’ve been unimaginable and indeed unbelievable that such a day will come when establishments, companies and factories will shut, shops and offices shut, even religious gatherings banned and movements restricted.

“We are not in a war as we’ve known wars to be; nation against nation, but yet we are in a war situation, more terrible than the conventional wars.

“Prevention is far better than cure and we have to preserve ourselves and people from getting infected by this deadly virus which has claimed almost 300,000 lives; infected and threatening to take more than three million human lives globally.

“All across the world , the pandemic is raging and leaving a trail of death more than any Tsunami or human disaster ever known.

“But God is our refuge and in Him we trust; we need not be filled with fear and trepidation as if we have no hope, we only need to be prayerful and united in our resolve to adhere to the laid down rules of hygienic practices and social distancing coupled with healthy living.

“I assure you, the great Nigerian workers that we all shall see the end of this virus and celebrate our victory over it.

“There is hope and you and I have to be our brother’s keepers.

“Share love; share care, share provisions in whatever way you can and share health and life and work together with the government and other well meaning organisations in every good and positive enterprise towards victory.”
