West Ham remain organised in defence for the most part of the game, until Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute of the cagey tie.

Leondro Trossard scored a brilliant low shot off Martin Odegaard’s pass to send the Arsenal fans into frenzy.

Mikel Arteta’s men had a scare in stoppage time when Callum Wilson equalised for West Ham but his goal was ruled out for a foul after a long VAR review.

The win takes Arsenal a step closer to their first Premier League title since 2004, and they will be crowned champions if they win their next two games against Burnley and Crystal Palace.

Arsenal tops the table with 79 points from 36 game while Manchester City follows closely with 74 points but with a game in hand.

Liverpool had endured their worst spell in over 70 years, losing nine of their previous 12 games.

Manager Arne Slot took drastic measures, leaving Mohamed Salah out of his starting line-up for the first time in the Premier League.

Salah’s replacement, Florian Wirtz, looked sharp, though he squandered Liverpool’s best chance of the first half with his tame effort from close range allowing Alphonse Areola to save.

Isak, who had looked short of form and fitness, spurned two opportunities before the break, drawing a fine reaction stop from Areola midway through the half.

But the Sweden striker slotted home a Cody Gakpo pull-back on the hour mark to give the Reds the lead they marginally deserved and rarely looked like giving up.

Liverpool’s cause was helped by Lucas Paqueta.

Paqueta was bizarrely booked twice for dissent within 60 seconds with less than 10 minutes to play, before Gakpo added a second in the 92nd minute to seal the three points.

Liverpool’s victory, only their second in eight league games, moved them up to eighth with 21 points from 13 matches, while West Ham are 17th with 11 points, level with 18th-placed Leeds United.

West Ham, whose players and fans paid tribute to former captain, coach and manager, Billy Bonds, who died aged 79 on Sunday, came into the match after back-to-back home victories and had seemingly turned the corner.

But Liverpool ultimately had too much quality and, crucially for Slot, managed to keep their fifth clean sheet of the season after shipping 10 goals in their last three games.

Isak could have put Liverpool in front inside four minutes but spooned his effort well over the bar, with his protracted move from Newcastle United still seemingly affecting him.

West Ham looked sharper after the break, with Paqueta sending an audacious half-volley from 30 yards narrowly wide as the home fans believed Liverpool were there for the taking.

In the 60th minute, however, Isak was left unmarked in the box as Liverpool recycled possession from a throw-in and the striker coolly side-footed into the bottom corner.

Paqueta saw red in the 83rd minute to make West Ham’s task all the harder before Gakpo sent the home fans streaming for the exits with a clinical finish.

There was a fluency to their attacking play that could well have yielded substantially more than the goals they put past the hapless visitors on Sunday.

Chelsea were three up at the break with Cole Palmer netting the 21st league goal of his debut season in West London, steering a loose ball into the corner.

Thereafter Conor Gallagher volleyed home.

Noni Madueke headed the third near the end of an excellent first half before Nicolas Jackson took his tally for the season to 13 in the league with a brace after the interval.

Chelsea climbed to seventh after recording back-to-back league wins for the first time since January, and there is increasingly the feeling that, after a difficult start, the players are responding to their head coach’s methods.

For David Moyes’ Hammers, this was a calamitous display, eliminated from Europe and now all but out of the race to qualify again next year.

It was hard to avoid a sense of a promising season petering out as the Chelsea goals flew past Alphonse Areola and their players came to look more and more dejected.

Goals from midfielder Tomas Soucek and defender Angelo Ogbonna ensured that West Ham fought from a goal down to defeat the hosts.

West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski conceded a penalty in the second minute, when he brought down Patrick Bamford and seemed to have redeemed himself by saving Mateusz Klich’s spot kick.

However, a retake was ordered due to Fabianski leaving his line and Klich scored at the second attempt.

Soucek put West Ham level in the 25th minute, out-muscling defender Stuart Dallas to head the ball into the net.

The visitors took the lead thanks to Ogbonna’s far-post header from an Aaron Cresswell free kick ten minutes from time.

Now level with Chelsea as the league’s best scorers from set pieces with eight goals, the win lifts the Hammers to fifth spot in the standings with 20 points after 12 games.

Leeds remain in 14th place on 14 points.

West Ham started the day three points above the drop zone, and they got off to the perfect start when Michail Antonio opened the scoring after four minutes.

Newcastle United levelled in the 17th minute through Miguel Almiron.

But they went behind again in the 66th minute when midfielder Tomas Soucek fired home a rebound after Declan Rice hit the crossbar with a header from a corner kick.

Jonjo Shelvey struck back immediately for Newcastle United, dancing through the visitors’ defence before slotting home to make it 2-2.

This has now left West Ham in 16th spot on 31 points, four points ahead of Aston Villa in 18th, with Newcastle United 12th on 43 points.
