Ascending the throne of the forefathers, as it is traditionally framed, is hardly ever straightforward among the Yorubas, even back in the day, even where ascendancy is linear and should ordinarily be straightforward.

The process of appointment is sometimes visited by intrigues threatening to torpedo what was hitherto taken as settled.

But it is what it is. I doubt that becoming Igbakeji Orisa was ever meant to be easy-peasy. It appears that there is an in-built friction into the process of transfiguration, man becoming spirit.

There is always that tinge of controversy, which has taken on different forms since colonisation and the post-colonial reconfigurations that have redefined the place of the traditional rulers, and everything about it. Afterall, the position has now been rendered subordinate to the ‘democratic’ system, with traditional rulers’ reporting line running through the local government.

The journey to demystification which started with the colonialists continued into the first Republic, with the institution getting caught up in the spoke of the politics of that era. So was it in the Second Republic. Soon enough, the process had become intricately interwoven with politics, with political leaders now playing outsized roles in who emerges or stays on the throne.

But beyond all that is the rebirth in the traditional process through which the Oba emerges. It became more difficult to tell between Ifa and the Afobajes who was doing what. If we have to defer to Ifa, it had to be that Ifa had started paying attention to other factors beyond what we would think would ordinarily be of interest to deity.

Or could it be that Ifa had begun to pay more attention to the size of the pocket, political connection or social status of aspirants, with a rash of appointments across the land that kept people wondering what must have been on the mind of Ifa, if indeed those choices emanated from the deity.

The truth is that, at some point, communities (The Elite) began to pay more attention to the educational/social/financial status of the aspirants to the throne, looking at having Gbajumos as Obas for reasons of prestige, brand equity and as a means of bringing in ‘development’ to the community.

That might have given birth to a culture of ‘armtwisting’ Ifa to give to the people what they want. After all, the voice of the people who matter is the voice of the gods.

If you pay close(r) attention to the ruckus around the robust interest by the Oluaye Fuji and Olori Omo Oba Akile Ijebu, King Wasiu Olasunkanmi Ayinde Adesanya Marshal in the vacant title of the Awujale, you will realise that what is at stake is beyond what is being let out.

Beyond the genealogical gymnastics and legalese that has attended is the unspoken message evident in the body language of the Elite. Easy to tell that there is steely determination more in the direction of who doesn’t become than who becomes. And that is understandable.

Ifa might have gone liberal, acquiescing to demands to nod on the direction of the Gbajumos, but communities are beginning to look around, asking questions now. They look at Iwo, asking questions. They look at…, asking questions.

How liberal should Ifa bend on these matters? Has Ifa become so liberal to look favourably in the direction of Alagbe when it comes to the throne? Has music been truly accepted in traditional circles as an endeavour befitting of the ‘serious’ minds? The answer is there in the unspoken words.

It is a rules-based order, no doubt.. Rules matter. But rules only matter when it aligns with what ‘people’ truly want, or do not want. Patrilineal or matrilineal, as long as there is precedence and proven connection, the rules can always find a way to accommodate.

There are instances where rules have been rewritten, revised, reinterpreted or outrightly set aside in the past, just to accommodate k-legs.

But in the case at hand, perhaps it is more than k-legs. The matrilineal family tree is struggling in terms of alignment. Perhaps if he was leaning on the patrilineal leg, it just might have been a stronger stand. Dual lineage, even if established is a plus as it is a minus. As they say, if you want to be Osaka, be Osaka, and if it is Osoko, be Osoko. To want to be Osaka-Osoko is quite a tricky proposition.

But who knows for sure how it will end though.

As I argued on Fatai’s page, positions taken on this matter have largely been coloured, for many, not necessarily by facts or rights, but by predispositions and assumptions that might neither be right nor true.

There is the issue of legality, but some men are sworn to their positions on reasons not necessarily legal.

But even if he finds favour with the law, that it is lawful might not necessarily make it expedient.

He has done well, given where he is coming from, to have bootstrapped his way up to the point where he is able to shake up the system as he has done.

He has to be mindful of the fact that he comes with an enormous reputational baggage not that easy to shake off.

The courage he has shown in being able to stand, in the face of massive odds is worthy of commendation.

Standing down now might better serve him. Who knows, it might even serve as a pedestal for him to stand upon in the future.

Who knows though?

Is he not supposed to be Afidipotemole?

Who knows?

The Kwara Police Command has confirmed the death of five people, including Police Inspector Adejumo Wasiu, following an attack by unknown gunmen in Babanla, Ifelodun local government area.

This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Ilorin by the command spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.

She said scores of armed criminals, and riding motorcycles, invaded Babanla on August 8, attacking the Divisional Police Headquarters and raiding the market.

According to her, the assailants fired sporadically, killing five people, including Inspector Wasiu.

She said a swift joint response by Police, Nigerian Army personnel, vigilantes, and local hunters repelled the attack, restored order, and began a full-scale manhunt.

On Sunday, Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, and the Kwara DSS Director visited Babanla for an on-the-spot security assessment.

They met traditional ruler, Oba Yusuf Aliyu Arojojoye II, holding high-level talks to consolidate peace and strengthen inter-agency and community-security collaboration.

The joint delegation toured key locations, including the market, Police Headquarters, and surrounding areas, to ensure stability was fully restored.

The commissioner ordered sustained armed patrols, continuous intelligence gathering, and deployment of specialised tracking teams.

Ejire-Adeyemi added that the DSS also pledged ongoing intelligence support to apprehend those responsible for the attack.

She reiterated the command’s commitment, in synergy with other security agencies, to protecting lives and property in Kwara.

She urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies by providing credible information.

Whereas my resolution was not to comment on the controversy surrounding the burial of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, pressure from readers caused me to rethink. “Are you afraid?”, one of them asked me. “Is it that you have nothing to say?”, another bellowed. Neither! I just felt it was much ado about nothing! There are more serious matters to discuss than the inanities of how a corpse is buried! Distractions! What does it matter if a corpse is buried in the traditional, Christian or Islamic way? Does it have anything to do with where the soul of the person in question ends up – Hell or Heaven, if these really exist?

In “Awujale and the funeral rites” by Abdu Rafiu (the pen name, I suppose, of Mr. Lade Bonuola, former Managing Director of The Guardian newspapers and my respected senior colleague), he recalled an interview granted by the oba on the occasion of his 86th birthday and 60th anniversary on the throne, in which he reportedly stated emphatically that “he was looking forward to meeting his Maker”. In other words, the main reason Adetona elected to be buried according to Islamic rites is that he considered burial according to traditional rites as idolatrous, which could debar him from “meeting his Maker”. Being a practising Muslim, Oba Adetona believed that the tenets of his religion compel how he should be buried; and that these stand him in pole position of “meeting his Maker” than if he is buried otherwise.

Thus, the argument as to whether or not Adetona observed traditional rites during his installation as oba and whether or not such rites mandate him to also be buried accordingly need not detain us here. Should Christians and Muslims not ready to go the whole hog of conforming to traditional rites dabble in chieftaincy matters? Are there such rites in the first place? If there are, what are they? Or should they not be disclosed to the uninitiated? Adetona not only contested that there were such rites, he also cast aspersion on those who said there were and who insisted they must be observed. Those questions, intriguing as they are, should be left for the kingmakers to answer. It should also lie within their powers to fashion out the modalities of ensuring compliance, if they consider such absolutely necessary.

Do funeral rites avail anything?

Now, does burial according to Islamic, Christian, traditional or whatever rites guarantee that the dead will meet his Maker? I do not think so! In my own view, the criterion that dictates whether or not the dead will meet his or her Maker is not the type of burial rites – or their absence – that the body of the deceased is subjected to. Hebrews 9:27 says it is appointed unto man to die but once, and after that is judgement – not burial! Christians believe that there is no repentance after death, which is why Christians do not pray or make supplications for the dead, but Muslims do. While we are still here on earth, it is difficult, in my own opinion, to emphatically say what is right and what is wrong in many respects as it pertains to religious dogmas and doctrines. Like the apostle Paul posits in 1 Corinthians 13: 9-12, we know in part and prophesy in part. Not until we get to heaven – and behold God face-to-face – do we have full knowledge of many of the things that we gallivant about here.

Should we still intercede for the dead?

Should we pray for the dead or not? Revelation 14:13 says: “And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.” Does this passage refer only to those who die in the Lord? What of those who do not? This passage is often interpreted to mean that once a person dies, his record is sealed; nothing can be added and nothing can be subtracted.

When a person dies, we may deposit the body in the morgue while we begin to shop for money to give a so-called “befitting burial.” We may give the children and other relatives who had JAPA enough time to JAPADA for the burial as preparations for an elaborate funeral are in top gear. Usually, Muslim burials are not as elaborate as those of Christians and traditionalists. But Heaven will have none of that! According to Hebrews 9:27 quoted above, once a person dies, Heaven immediately triggers the judgment mode, ever before the person is buried. The funeral rites following after death are none of their concerns in Heaven. So, if you like, bury; if you like, don’t bury. That is your own cup of tea, not theirs in Heaven!

READ ALSO: Terror in the skies: Why this case must not be swept under the carpet

Now, the story is told of the spiritual leader of a prominent Pentecostal church in Nigeria who died and while emissaries were still going round summoning church leaders, Baba woke up again and began to agitatedly demand: “Please, help me look for them!” Who are the “them”? The story is also told that Baba came across a Christian tract whose message was so impactful that he thought the whole world must hear it. So he ordered a massive reproduction of the same tract. He did not alter the authorship. While his members were distributing these tracts, the copyright owners chanced upon them and accused Baba, who was anything but lettered, of plagiarism.

What kind of audacity would make a man think he could detain an aircraft or prevent it from flying?

Baba pleaded and turned over all the tracts to them to go and distribute. For him, all that mattered was for the message to reach the perishing souls, not who took credit. To his chagrin and utter consternation, the other party collected the pile of tracts printed by Baba and set everything ablaze! Baba screamed and stormed out of the venue in anger. That was the incident that nearly cost him his place in Heaven – but he was sent back at the gate to go and restitute. Now, in the light of Hebrews 9: 27, how do we explain what happened to Baba?

Will cadavers also make Heaven?

I am persuaded that what will make a man meet his Maker is certainly not the type of burial his dead body is subjected to. What of those who skip burial altogether by donating their dead bodies to teaching hospitals as cadavers? What of those who perish in air and such other crashes whose bodies are never found? Now, what kind of burial rites did Moses enjoy? What of Enoch and John the Baptist? All the disciples of Jesus, except John the Beloved, died cruel deaths. What burial rites did they enjoy? Did they – or did they not – meet their Maker?

From time immemorial, religion has been employed to manipulate the people, leading Karl Marx to describe it as the opium of the people. In recent times, not only has poverty been weaponized against the poor and hapless, religion no less!

People who despise their own traditions and customs travel to foreign lands at great costs and personal discomfort to observe and tremble before the traditions and customs of foreigners who, justifiably, look down on them and treat them as objects lesser than human worth!

Yet, before our very eyes we saw the English observe and uphold their own customs and traditions during the burial of their late monarch, Queen Elizabeth 11! We dare not describe such rites as idolatrous! We were also too shell-shocked to rage at the Ku Klux Klan-like parade that attended the burial of Pope Francis in April this year!

At no time than this does the need to decolonize our minds become more imperative!

Tell KWAM 1 to watch it!

Ogho (Owo) elders have a saying: When a mistake or mishap happens for the first time, they call it “the yam”. When it repeats itself, they describe it as “the peels of the yam”. But when it reoccurs the third time, they say it is “the point of no return”! Tell Wasiu Ayinde Adewale Olasunkanmi Omogbolahan Anifowoshe aka KWAM 1, to watch it, lest it becomes his every time, and all the time, as they say! Like the Tortoise!

How long ago was a private call to him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made to go viral, wherein he used first person singular tense to address the country’s Number One citizen! In age, position, wealth – everything – is Tinubu his mate? The fact that he is regarded by many as the President’s official (?) musician does not mean he should take liberty for licence. He must note that the Oyinbo that made pencils also made erazer!

What kind of audacity would make a man think he could detain an aircraft or prevent it from flying? Because he knows the President? Because of his fame as a crooner? Or because of his wealth? Like we heard someone taunt him in the video that has now gone viral, why did Wasiu duck in the nick of time? Why not maintain his “I-will-not-yield” stance and let the wing of the aircraft do its worst?

The explanations of those trying to explain away Wasiu’s action did not wash; even as the preliminary decision of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) appears ludicrous. One explanation said what Wasiu had in his flask was his doctor’s prescription; another said it was nothing but water. Whichever, why not hand it over to the officials on demand? For goodness sake, why spill something on somebody? Because you are a “big man”? Remember how a National Assembly member shamelessly treated an Uber driver in the same Abuja sometime ago? Assuming you even have a grouse, there are more appropriate ways of lodging a protest.

In case Wasiu did not know, the scenes created have serious implications. One: It demarkets the KWAM 1 brand. Two: it must have embarrassed his teeming fans. Three: it would be a source of anguish for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu if his association with Wasiu is factored into this. Four: Imagine if the aircraft had run Wasiu over? What a great loss it would have been to Wasiu himself, his family, fans, and the country as a whole! Five: The incident has caused the airline – for no fault of its own – great financial loss and reputational damage. Six: The pilot’s own shortcomings notwithstanding, an incident that shouldn’t have arisen at all has now been allowed to jeopardise someone else’s professional career. Seven: The lives of other passengers were needlessly put at risk; not to talk of time lost and denial of comfort and peace of mind. Eight: Man-hours and resources will now be expended by aviation agencies and personnel to try and handle this infraction on air safety.

For example, the NCAA has placed a six-month “no-fly” ban on Wasiu as well as suspended the pilot of the aircraft while also vowing that “everybody involved… will be brought to book” and that it “will do everything we can to get to the root of it. Everybody who needs to be punished or sanctioned will receive justice”! Haa! If you haven’t got to the “root” of the matter, where, then, did the punishment already meted out to Wasiu and the pilot come from – from the “leaves”, “branches” or “stem” of the matter? What kind of “justice” will Wasiu and the pilot again get? Does this speak volumes about the quality of the personnel that superintend our affairs?

NB: Wasiu has apologised! That is good. Maybe it will mitigate his full punishment in the final analysis.

A 35 years old man, Eluyera Wasiu, has been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for planning with one Adeniyi Samuel to kill his 29 years old pregnant wife.

The suspect and his accomplice, were arrested following a distress call received by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Ogijo divisional headquarters, from concerned members of the public on January 1, 2022.

According to the spokesman of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the complaint was that the two men were engaging themselves in a very serious physical combat at Oponuwa area of Ogijo, and that if they were not quickly arrested, it may lead to bloodshed.

Upon the distress call, the DPO, CSP Muhammed Baba, quickly detailed his men to the scene, where the two suspects were promptly arrested.

It was during interrogation to know the cause of the fight that Adeniyi Samuel opened up and informed the police that Eluyera Wasiu contracted him to kill his pregnant wife, one Bola Taiwo.

He stated further that Eluyera Wasiu promised to give him N10,000 for the job, out of which he had already gave him N5,000, to pay the balance on completion of the job.

Preliminary investigation revealed that, Wasiu Eluyera was married to Bola Taiwo but they got separated due to irreconcilable differences.

Wasiu later got married to another woman who is presently living with him.

But somehow, he met with his former wife and they started going out together again which resulted in pregnancy.

In order not to upset his new wife, Wasiu asked Bola Taiwo to terminate the pregnancy, the suggestion that was rejected by Bola Taiwo.

Having tried all he could to abort the pregnancy to no avail, Wasiu Eluyera decided to eliminate the woman and the pregnancy.

In his confessional statement, he stated that he had twice bought food for her from one eatery and laced the food with poison, but the lady by providence did not eat the food.

It was when all his personal efforts to kill her failed that he contracted Adeniyi Taiwo to help him eliminate her.

He confessed further that he personally took Adeniyi to the woman’s house, and he gave him her picture for easy identification.

But when he didn’t carry out the assignment as agreed, he demanded the refund of the advance payment he made to him, and his refusal led to the fight which eventually led to their arrest.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered a full scale investigation of the case with the view to arraign the suspect in court as soon as investigation is concluded.

Mr. Olugbade reported on November 22 that sometime in August 2021, he accused his wife of having extra marital affair with one Ismail Wasiu.

According to him, to his surprise, his wife packed out of his house and allegedly moved to the house of Ismail Wasiu, the said concubine.

He stated further that on the November 14, 2021, he learnt that the wife of Ismail Wasiu had an argument with his wife, and the said Wasiu’s wife poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.

He said his wife, Tosin Olugbade, was rushed to the hospital by her family members but later gave up the ghost while receiving treatment.

Upon the report, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Onipanu division, CSP Bamidele Job, quickly mobilised his men and moved to the scene where the husband of Kehinde who was said to have asked his wife to run away was arrested.

The case was then transferred to homicide section of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.

The CSP Femi Olabode-led homicide team embarked on technical and intelligence based investigation, which led to the apprehension of the suspect, Kehinde Abdul Wasiu at Saki area of Oyo State.

On interrogation, the suspect confessed that he committed the crime, but claimed that she didn’t know what came over her on that day.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect and her husband initially lied to the family of the deceased that it was cooking gas that exploded and burnt her.

But when the lie was said to be exposed, the husband quickly asked the wife to take run away.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered the speedy conclusion of the investigation into the case with the view to charge the case to court as soon as possible.

Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, at the weekend cautioned against ethnic profiling in Nigeria, describing the trend as “a clear and present danger” to corporate existence of the country.

“Ethnic profiling is a cancer that is a clear and present danger to corporate existence of our country. It is a phenomenon that has led to loss of lives and destruction of properties worth billions of naira,” AbdulRazaq said in Osogbo at the grand finale of the 2020 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Osun State Council.

“The fact that we speak different tongues or have different origins is not the problem. Differences are established facts of history. The problem has been a culture of negative profiling of one another on the basis of ethnicity. This leads to mutual distrust, unnecessary suspicion, hatred, unhealthy rivalry which eventually graduate to ethnic violence as we have seen in various parts of our country.”

AbdulRazaq, who was the keynote speaker at the event, urged the media to lead the battle against ethnic profiling.

The governor was represented at the event by his chief press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye.

Speaking on the topic ‘Ethnic profiling and threat to national cohesion’, the governor said no particular ethnic group has the patent for any specific bad conducts, and urged Nigerians to desist from blaming people’s bad conducts on their origins or religions.

“No tribe is bad. None is created to be bad. What makes a person bad is not their ethnicity. What makes a person bad is a set of anti-social behaviours that hurts everyone, including persons from their own ethnic group. Every ethnic group has its good, bad, and the ugly. So, what is bad is not the ethnicity of any individual or suspected criminal. What is bad are the anti-social behaviours such persons have exhibited to the detriment of the larger society,” he added.

“Whether in news reporting or analysis of national events, (the media) should discourage the use of words or terms that may profile people on the basis of their ethnicity or any other cleavages. Some of such dangerous or derogatory terms, in modern ethnic relations in Nigeria, are Fulani herdsmen, Igbo traders, Yaminri, or Aboki. These terms connote negativity, even when their true and original meanings may not necessarily be bad. A good example is Aboki, a word that ordinarily means ‘friend’. Today, however, the term aboki is misunderstood to mean a fool by popular estimation.”

The governor also urged Nigerians to take up the responsibility of stopping ethnic profiling and promote things that help to strengthen national unity and development of the country.

“As a nation, we need to urgently navigate away from seeing whatever happens in this country or action taken by government at any level from the prisms of ethnicity. It is a dangerous voyage which does no one any good. Rather, it veils us from seeing things from fair and balanced perspective or appreciating whatever benefits derivable from such efforts,” AbdulRazaq said.

“Our obvious diversities must not be impediments to national unity and cohesion. We should appreciate our differences, tolerate one another and move away from all divisive tendencies, and embrace one another for national unity and cohesion. This is when our differences could be a blessing to us in Nigeria.”

Chairman of the occasion and former registrar/chief executive of the National Board for Technical Education, NABTEB, Prof. Olu Aina, for his part, charged media professionals to continuously encourage technical education to make citizens self-reliant and not job seekers to reduce unemployment.

“The recent #EndSARS protest was not an accident but an incident that was bound to happen partly because of unemployment. For the past 30 years, I have been emphasising on technical education and employment of the youths. Media professionals must make more noise on this to avoid another protest,” he said.

Chairman of Osun NUJ, Wasiu Ajadosu, in his remarks, commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for the recent support to Kwara NUJ and sought similar support from various stakeholders to Osun NUJ.

“It should be noted that just recently, the Kwara State Government supported NUJ in the state with the sum of N17.5m for the rehabilitation of its facility. Although Osun NUJ understands that there is paucity of funds in the state (Osun) with huge financial responsibility, we nonetheless consider it imperative for the government to come to our aid as a matter of exigency,” he said.

Ajadosu also commended Osun Governor Gboyega Oyetola for appointing six journalists into the government, saying it was unprecedented in the annals of the union in the state.
