The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has called on the Federal Government to probe the allegation of bribery against Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

The call is contained in a letter written by the group and directed to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The open letter dated November 2, 2018 is signed by SERAP’s senior legal adviser, Ms Bamisope Adeyanju.

The probe, SERAP, reasoned, would enable the prosecution of Ganduje after leaving office.

As a governor, he currently enjoys immunity.

SERAP’s letter reads in part: “Given the history of corruption in Nigeria, especially unresolved allegations of grand corruption against many state governors, your government cannot and should not look the other way regarding the allegations against Mr Ganduje.

“Any allegations of bribery and abuse of power in any state of Nigeria is of concern to every Nigerian, and should therefore, be of concern to your government.

“The obligations of your government to combat corruption in Nigeria extend to all the three tiers of government, namely, the federal government, state government and local government.

“Although primarily a matter of concern for Kano State, the allegations of bribery against Mr Ganduje have assumed such a proportion as to become a matter of concern to the federation as a whole, and therefore, to your government.”

Stating that the step would be in line with the government’s fight against corruption, SERAP said the president should “direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN, and/or appropriate anti-corruption agencies to without delay investigate allegations of bribery against Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, as contained in the widely circulated video clips allegedly showing Mr Ganduje receiving bribe.”

Ganduje is currently facing allegation of corruption bordering on receipt of bribe from contractors.

An online newspaper, Daily Nigerian, published a video of the governor allegedly receiving bribe from a contractor.

The governor has since denied the allegation, saying the video must have been doctored.

The Kano State House of Assembly has set up a committee to probe the case and it is ongoing.

Jaafar Jaafar, publisher of the Daily Nigerian has appeared before the committee and insisted that the video was genuine.

He also offered to make available, the unedited version of the video.

The committee has summoned the governor too, but he refused to appear, sending two of his commissioners to represent him.

He claimed he was attending to a pressing issue at the State House at the time.

He, however, in a statement he submitted to the committee, insisted that there was no truth in the bribery claim against him.

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has been summoned by the state’s House of Assembly to explain all that he knows about the video allegedly showing him collecting bribe from some contractors.

He is to appear on Friday.

The invitation to the governor was signed by Baffa Danagundi, chairman of the committee set up by the legislative house to probe the case.

He was, apart from appearing, required to write a statement and possibly come with his lawyer.

An online news medium, Daily Nigerian, published a video said to be showing the governor while receiving bribe from some contractors.

Although the governor has since denied collecting bribe and vowed to sue the newspaper, the House of Assembly, which said it had the jurisdiction to probe the case prevailed on him not to go to court as it set up a committee to probe the matter.

Already, the publisher of the newspaper, Jaafar Jaafar, had appeared before the committee upon invitation, insisting that the video was genuine.

Jafaar said it was ready to provide the unedited tape to the committee to assist in the probe.

He explained how a contractor revealed the crime and a spy camera was eventually planted on him for the video recording.

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Sunday threatened to sue Daily Nigerian, an online news medium, over a video allegedly showing him of involvement in $5 million bribery scam.

The video was said to be showing him collecting bribe from suspected contractors.

But in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, the governor said the claims were untrue.

He also described the video as cloned.

“We wish to state that there is no iota of truth to these allegations and if there is any such alleged video, it is at best cloned.

“The government of Kano State is taking this matter seriously and will exploit every appropriate and legal avenue to ensure that it gets to the root of the matter and the perpetrators brought to book,” the commissioner said.

But in a statement by the publisher of Daily Nigerian, Jaafar Jaafar, a spy camera was planted on a contractor to achieve the video.

Jaafar Jaafar has since gone underground following alleged threat to his life.

His words: “During a 10-month effort to capture the bribe giving/taking scenes, the governor’s face and body were clearly captured in nine clips, while six others did not clearly reveal the governor’s face.

“About $5 million dollars were delivered to the governor during the sting operation. One of the contractors, who preferred not to be named, said the reason he collaborated with Daily Nigerian was to expose corruption and bring sanity to the country.

“The contractor stated that if his aim was to blackmail or extort the governor, he would have used the videos to get over a billion settlement or force the governor to pay the hundreds of millions of naira the state was owing to his company or force him to pay back all the money he paid as kickbacks.

“We believe if public office holders are exposed, there will be sanity in the system.”
