It was President Bola Tinubu’s inaugural meeting with the leaders and coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, the main vehicle for his 2027 re-election campaign. Held on Thursday April 16 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President delivered an outstanding speech at the meeting, challenging the ambassadors to boldly discharge their assignment while sparing no word for the opposition that is riding roughshod on the country’s legal system.

“You represent the conscience of a nation that wants to break the shackles of poverty and hopelessness. This is a lifetime opportunity to break the shackles of poverty and ignorance,’’ the President told the ambassadors, adding, “we cannot submit to disobedience of a lawful order of the court; we must embrace the judiciary, whether it favours us or not.

“We submit to this principle of democracy, separation of powers, and understanding of the dynamics of it, and the nationhood that Nigeria is, that we must build one country. That’s what Renewed Hope is all about. You must give them that hope. There’s no other path for us to attain national greatness other than to build one common vision for the progress and prosperity of our people. That is what we must do,’’ he added.

In attendance at the meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima, All Progressives Congress National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, Deputy Director-General and Governor of Kaduna State Uba Sani and RHA National Secretary and Governor of Gombe State Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya. Also at the event were Governors Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Agbu Kefas (Taraba) and Monday Okpebholo (Edo).

What the RNH leaders and ambassadors say at the event is both interesting and inspiring.

Governor Uzodimma:

“Our purpose is to brief Mr President on how far we have gone with this national assignment, to present the substance of the work already done, and to reaffirm that the structure he graciously created is not only alive but active, coordinated, and already creating measurable political and civic dividends across the nation.

“At the regional level, activities have begun in earnest. All the structures of all the local governments have been inaugurated, as in the electoral wards. We have kick–started the process of enumeration up to the polling unit level. We are continuously harvesting data during enrolment, taking the messages to the markets, schools and professional groups, women platforms and faith-based and grassroots political structures.”

Deputy DG and Kaduna Governor Uba Sanni:

“We have all it takes to take the message of renewed hope to every ward, local government and state. We have not done enough. I believe we have to do more. We have to continue telling our story. If we don’t tell our story, other people will tell the story their own way.

“No President in the history of Nigeria has supported the sub-nationals like President Tinubu. The opposition is not out to contest election; their agenda is anarchy. And that is the reason why governors, ministers, LG chairmen must take the message of renewed hope to the grassroots. We in the North are the major beneficiaries. And the ministers, heads of agencies must speak out.”

RHA Secretary and Gombe Governor Inuwa:

“We have what it takes, and we must deliver. All the ambassadors should go out. Governor Biodun Oyebanji spoke of President Tinubu’s support for the sub-nationals and how he is lucky to be a governor at this time. I was governor before 2023 and I’m governor now doing my second term, I know the difference better because I have experienced the two periods.”

RHA North-West Zonal Coordinator and former Governor of Katsina State Aminu Masari:

“We know very well that reformers are always finding it extremely difficult at the beginning. More especially, if you are reforming in a society that is very difficult to understand, and some are willing to make people not to understand.”

Commending President Tinubu for taking hard but necessary reforms that leaders before him could not, he said: “Nigeria has become better for it. You have done so much, Mr President, but don’t allow noisemakers to distract you. Your bashings are not for you alone. Even your detractors know that you have done well.

“Will anyone come tomorrow and say he will reverse the removal of fuel subsidy or return the nation to multiple foreign exchange rates?”

Ex-Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim:

“We are aware of the strategic importance of our assignment. The opposition is orchestrating mischief through misinformation and fake news. But we are ahead of them.

“The appointment of a political field marshal like Governor Uzodimma as Director-General is also strategic. A dynamic team leader, with him we are in the right direction.”

Ex-Nasarawa Governor Tanko AlMakura:

“No President was as prepared for the job as President Tinubu. That is why his policies were well thought out and redeeming the country.

With the government’s policies and RH agenda, we have all become homogenous in our commitment to the success of this administration”.

Former Delta Governor Okowa:

“President Tinubu has re-engineered the economy. The sub-national governments can now breathe and breathe well.

“The best way to educate our children is to give them education, sound education, Mr. President thank you for giving us the student loan scheme, NELFUND. Thank you for bringing this about. As of March this year, 1.16 million students had benefitted according to official statistics.

Others who spoke at the event included APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda and Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State.

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday in Abuja, reaffirmed his commitment to building a stable, peaceful, and prosperous nation, assuring that the well-being of Nigerians remained his top priority.

He stated that the political and economic structures that had long undermined Nigerians’ prosperity were being steadily replaced through the realignment of the economy to enable full participation.

Receiving a delegation of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State at the State House, President Tinubu pledged to sustain reforms aimed at creating more opportunities for poor and vulnerable citizens.

Vice President Kashim Shettima and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, also attended the event, alongside many governors: Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Mohammed Inuwa (Gombe), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), and Uba Sani (Kaduna), who also serves as deputy director-general of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors..

A host of former governors, including Aminu Bello Masari (Katsina), Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta), and Tanko Almakura (Nasarawa), attended, as well as former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, the APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Bashiru, zonal coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, directors and the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ibrahim Masari.

President Tinubu emphasised that the more citizens participated in shaping their lives and future, the better society would be for generations to come.

He urged the Renewed Hope Ambassadors to continue sensitising and mobilising citizens, especially at the grassroots, on the government’s efforts to improve their livelihoods through economic reforms.

“You represent the conscience of a nation that wants to break the shackles of poverty and hopelessness,’’ he said.

President Tinubu assured that the administration would uphold the tenets of democracy, including the rule of law, the separation of powers and the rights of all citizens.

“We cannot submit to disobedience of a lawful order of the court; we must embrace the judiciary, whether it favours us or not. We submit to this principle of democracy, separation of powers, and understanding of the dynamics of it, and the nationhood that Nigeria is, that we must build one country. That’s what Renewed Hope is all about. You must give them that hope.

“There’s no other path for us to attain national greatness other than to build one common vision for the progress and prosperity of our people. That is what we must do,’’ he added.

He reiterated that his government was guided by a clear vision to foster inclusive growth, create opportunities for youth, and ensure that every Nigerian — regardless of background or region — had a stake in the country’s future.

He encouraged citizens not to be discouraged by the misinformation championed by the opposition elements in the country.

He said the great accomplishments witnessed in modern times were achieved through visionary leadership, assuring that Nigeria is in safe hands.

To the opposition, he said: “They want to scare me off? It’s a lie. I’ve been through this path before. And if I have to come back over and over and over again, I’ll do the same thing. There is no better place than your own country. And no one can build it except you. We saw great things, skyscrapers. We wonder how the plane takes off and flies us from one destination to another. There was no magic of yesterday. It is the thinker of tomorrow and the future that can elevate life, that can reform us all.

“And being the transformative leaders that you are, you are in good company. Don’t be afraid. I’ve listened to you. I didn’t have to look back on the economy because the truth is, I took over from myself. The late Buhari was me. He was my partner. And if I took over from him. Is that not from me? So, if something is wrong, fine. Live with it, correct it, move on. The life voyage is not going to be easy. I can only stand before you and say you will not regret it. That is why we ask you to renew their hope. If they don’t want to see the hope and the roads and bridges, and the children we raise, the economy we are growing, we shall lend them Jigi-Bola, eyeglasses. One thing that you need from me is a promise that I won’t run away from the affair. With you, the deal is done.”

Turning to the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, President Tinubu promised to be their greatest champion.

“We act as one family. You represent a conscience, a nation that wants to break the shackles of poverty, ignorance, and hopelessness. You are in a good company. That’s all I can say. And all I can promise is I won’t give up.”

Earlier, the Director–General of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA)and Governor of Imo State, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, said they were at the State House to update the president on the progress made so far.

“Our purpose in coming is to brief Mr President on how far we have gone with this national assignment, to present the substance of the work already done, and to reaffirm that the structure you graciously created is not only alive but active, coordinated, and already creating measurable political and civic dividends across the nation.

“At the regional level, activities have begun in earnest. All the structures of all the local governments have been inaugurated, as in the electoral wards.

“We have kick-started the process of enumeration up to the polling unit level. We are continuously harvesting data during enrolment, taking the messages to the markets, schools and professional groups, women’s platforms and faith-based and grassroots political structures,” Governor Uzodimma said.

He lauded President Tinubu for his purposeful leadership and assured him of their loyalty and commitment to the success of the assignment.

The North-West Zonal Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and former Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, commended the courage and political sagacity of the president, describing him as a dogged reformer despite the teething difficulties being experienced.

“We know very well that reformers are always finding it extremely difficult at the beginning, more especially, if you are reforming in a society that is very difficult to understand, and some are willing to make people not understand,” Masari said.

Masari commended the president for taking hard but necessary reforms that leaders before him could not, saying that Nigeria had become better for it.

He assured the president that most political heavyweights in the North-West Geo-Political Zone were solidly behind the All Progressives Congress, APC, stating that the struggle for a better Nigeria is for all to undertake.

He assured that the North West leaders had resolved to take a tour of the numerous federal projects in the zone to create greater awareness among citizens.

“You have done so much, Mr President, but don’t allow noise makers to distract you. Your bashings are not for you alone. Even your detractors know that you have done well.

“Will anyone come tomorrow and say he will reverse the removal of fuel subsidy or return the nation to multiple foreign exchange rates?”, Masari said.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, lauded President Tinubu for the infrastructural revolution across the nation, enabled by the several reform programmes of his administration, as attested to by state governors.

Former Governor Okowa, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, Governors Uba Sani and Biodun Oyebanji also delivered goodwill messages at the meeting.

By SHEDDY OZOENE

In political parlance, an echo chamber emerges when party members spend more time talking to themselves than in engaging with the people. They focus on showing loyalty to their leader instead of convincing skeptical voters. In that regard, the South-East, at least for the All Progressives Congress and the all-pervasive campaign for a second term for President Bola Tinubu, is very much like one big echo chamber.

President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition has become the defining issue within the APC and across Nigeria’s broader political landscape. It has swept nearly all state governors into the party and crippled the major opposition parties. Yet, in the South-East, the drive has not truly taken off, not in the sense that reflects genuine public buy-in.

The people’s buy-in is paramount in every political campaign, especially in a region where the APC is still seen as existing more in symbolism than in reality. Members and their leaders appear more interested in hearing their own voices than in persuading those who remain unconvinced that the President deserves another term. Even the chants of “On Your Mandate We Shall Stand” at gatherings in Government Houses have become a hollow ritual when set against the mood of the general population in the South-East.

The recent history of the region which was a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for over 20 years until Peter Obi and the Labour Party disrupted that dominance in 2023, should be instructive. For the APC, the zone was long considered a political no-go area up until the last round of general elections. This is in spite of the fact that the party had started making inroads into the region since Hope Uzodimma became governor of Imo State in January 2020, following a Supreme Court judgment against Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP. He was quickly followed by Dave Umahi who as Ebonyi State governor, defected from the PDP to the APC ten months later in November, 2020.

It is a disruption that Obi is threatening again with his African Democratic Congress next year. Quietly and increasingly, the ADC is making progress across the country, but in the South-East, it is organising strongly by building a bottom up support base.

But from a no-go area a few years back, the fortunes of the APC have improved since after the 2023 elections. Peter Mbah who won the Enugu governorship on the platform of the PDP after a nail-biting contest against Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party, has since defected to the APC. The party now boasts of influence with their governors in three of the five South-East states. The other two governors in Anambra and Abia—Chukwuma Soludo and Alex Otti—have shown open support for Tinubu’s second term.

For the party and for Tinubu, it has been an opportunity to consolidate. They have done little in that regard. They would rather celebrate in the belief that the high-profile decampments have translated to a seismic political shift.

On paper it is, but in reality the political sentiment of the ordinary people in the South-East has not shifted in tandem with the movements of the elite. In fact, the general belief is that those elite decampments are driven by personal interests, not by any real change in conviction.

If you talk to ordinary people across the region, you’ll find a mix of indifference and skepticism toward the APC’s growing presence. More especially, the campaign to return President Tinubu for a second term. And most of the politicians involved haven’t done much to explain their decisions, anyway. The fact is that their rhetoric, once they jump into the APC, has never been about the party or its policies, but about Tinubu.

How does everything about a political party shift from the people and policies that affect them, to the ambition of one man?

In the South-East zone, the Tinubu reelection campaign train – driven by the governors, Senators and APC elite – is surely on the move. But the coaches that should carry the people are largely empty

As the APC candidate in 2023, Bola Tinubu was well aware that the South-East is a region with a political mind of its own. He recognised his limited acceptability there, which explains his reluctance to campaign in the zone physically. Nearly three years in office and with the inroad he appears to have made, why is he still struggling to gain wider acceptance in the South-East?

The answer is in the justified anger in the area that his administration’s policies have had a disproportionately negative impact on the region. While some infrastructure projects are ongoing, they are seen as insufficient compared to developments in other parts of the country. The absence of clarity around key national projects such as the standard gauge rail line that doesn’t include the South-East, remains a sore point. Equally contentious is the glaring reality that federal appointments are skewed, not just in favour of a particular region, but noticeably against the South-East.

Against this backdrop, many in the region feel justified in questioning whether a continuation of the current administration would serve their interests.

Yet, instead of addressing these concerns with sincerity and respect, what the public often encounters are choreographed displays of questionable loyalty and promises of a coming Eldorado. And the Eldorado that has since manifested is the type on display by the City Boys Movement, headed by Obi Cubana, in Owerri recently. Bags of rice, grinding machines and sundry kitchen utensils. The Owerri display came at the same period the President appointed Taiwo Oyedele as the 11th Minister from the South-West – more than double that of the South-East – and just before he travelled to London to negotiate a multimillion dollar loan to renew and expand the ports in Lagos.

How should a self-respecting geopolitical zone accept to be so shabbily treated?

As 2027 draws close, the South-East is left between the rock and a hard place.

The once-dominant PDP is now a shadow of its former self in the region—its structures weakened and many of its leaders absorbed into the APC. The Labour Party, which surged in 2023, has also struggled to maintain cohesion beyond Abia State where it produced the governor. The result is a fragmented political landscape in which voters are neither fully aligned with the old order nor persuaded by the new.

As one APC leader in Enugu reportedly boasted, all they are interested in is to give President Bola Tinubu “his 25 per cent” of votes cast. Perhaps that target is achievable if we remember that Muhammadu Buhari, with all the cold relationship with the region, was still able to achieve it. The question is: is that truly the extent of the President’s ambition in the South-East?

If so, it is a troubling proposition. It suggests not just a low bar for political engagement, but a deeper indifference to, and deep contempt for the region itself. A party that needs only “his 25 per cent” has little incentive to genuinely compete for the trust of the people.

Which is why the party members are more engaged in the ongoing jostling for recognition, scrambling for advantage, positioning themselves as Tinubu’s foot soldiers in the impending campaign and sharing the spoils of a battle not yet fought. All these while the people and their expectations are relegated to the margins.

From the look of things, the chances of Peter Obi securing the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress remain uncertain. Regardless, one thing is clear about the party’s prospects in the South-East: if its leaders continue to build a truly bottom-up structure—one that listens and engages—they will find the region a low-hanging fruit. Obi’s conversation with the people remains robust, but to what end?

And that brings us to where we started. In the South-East, the Tinubu re-election campaign train—driven by governors, senators and the APC elite—is clearly in motion. The problem, however, is that the long chain of coaches meant to carry the people remains largely empty.

Does Peter Obi appeal more to the people? It would appear so, but the people will remember that the last time he showed up in 2023, they disrupted the political process by voting for his Labour Party candidates. They handed him a flock he could not hold together. So, why would they build again on quicksand?

That’s the dilemma facing the South-East.

President Bola Tinubu, on Sunday in Lagos, said his administration would intensify efforts to tackle the challenges of insecurity across various parts of the country, assuring that the safety and well-being of citizens featured at the meetings held in the United Kingdom.

President Tinubu, who hosted the Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 governors at his Lagos home for the Eid el-Fitr, said that he had followed up on support for modern security interventions with French President Emmanuel Macron.

“Your presence here today and the number show your sincerity, commitment and value for friendship and togetherness.

“The next phase of our struggle is staring us in the face, and that is the challenge of insecurity in the country.

“I am making all the efforts to ensure that we collectively share the joy of our victory over tyranny. Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity. I am glad you are all mindful of the challenge.

“For me, I have committed to strengthening further the contacts and networks that are necessary. One of the major discussions in the United Kingdom was on equipment and support.

“I can report to you that yesterday, again, I had a lengthy discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron. They are collaborating with us for equipment and support. I am also making frantic efforts to contact other nations,’’ he stated.

President Tinubu and First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, returned on Friday from a three-day State Visit to the United Kingdom, where King Charles III and Queen Camila hosted them.

The president also held a meeting with the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, before his return to Nigeria for the Eid-el-fitr.

“We should care more for the vulnerable. I know this Middle East crisis will spike inflation and affect our purchasing power. The labour union and others will be gearing to ask us to support more due to the effect of the Middle East war and crisis,’’ the president added.

The president urged the state governors to remain steadfast and resilient in translating their ideas and visions into policies and programmes that directly impact citizens’ livelihoods, and to support the government in tackling the “tyranny” of criminals.

President Tinubu advised the governors to provide further incentives to cushion the inflationary impact of the war in the Middle East on energy and transportation prices.

He thanked Vice President, Kashim Shettima, for the condolence visit to Borno State, assuring the people of the state of stronger protection through new technology.

In his remarks, the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, thanked the president for his intervention in the states with the visionary Renewed Hope Agenda.

“On behalf of my colleagues, the governors, we bring your excellency, season greetings from the people of our various states. We thank the Almighty God for His mercies that saw us through the month of Ramadan.

“We pray that the Almighty God will see us through the period of Lent, and grant us sustainable peace,’’ he said.

The chairman of NGF congratulated the president on the successful State Visit to the United Kingdom and the investment agreements reached.

“While our mission has been to have a good relationship with the United Kingdom, the State Visit, first in 37 years, is bold and significant. It speaks to new levels of relationship with Nigeria, and we thank you for it.

“Together, we must see that the issue of insecurity comes to an end. Regarding state police, discussions are ongoing with various security agencies led by the National Security Adviser, and the NGF has made its contributions. The NGF will take the document to the National Assembly to see how we can have a legislative framework for the state police,’’ the governor noted.

Governors at the meeting were Sen. Hope Uzodimma, Imo State; Alex Otti, Abia State; Umo Eno, Akwa Ibom State; Douye Diri, Bayelsa State; Hyacinth Alia, Benue State; Bassey Otu, Cross River State; Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta State; Francis Nwifuru, Ebonyi State; Monday Okpebholo, Edo State; Peter Mbah, Enugu State; Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya, Gombe State; and Umar Namadi, Jigawa State.

Others: Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kano State; Dikko Umaru Radda, Katsina State; Ahmed Usman Ododo, Kogi State; Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State; Abdullahi Sule, Nasarawa State; Caleb Mufwang, Plateau State; Siminalayi Fubara, Rivers State; Agbu Keffas, Taraba State; Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State and Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ondo State.

The deputy governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur, was also at the meeting.

All governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, have thrown their weight behind the recent re-engineering of national security architecture by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that safety of citizens’ lives and their property remains a non-negotiable obligation of the government.

The governors, under the aegis of Progressive Governors Forum, PGF, met for two days in Lagos in a strategic meeting where they discussed sundry matters affecting the state of the nation.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hosted the meeting held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island.

The Forum, led by the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, issued a communiqué at the end of the meeting, reiterating its confidence in Nigeria’s future as a united, peaceful and prosperous country.

Members of the Forum, during the meeting, reviewed the security situation across the country, expressing appreciation to President Tinubu for what they called “improved coordination” between Federal, state and local security structures, as well as the courage and sacrifices of security agencies and community volunteers.

The APC governors hailed the president’s handling of security challenges, pointing out that the re-engineering in the security architecture of the country by the president was in order.

Reading the communique, Governor Uzodimma said the PGF resolved to support the president’s effort by continuing to strengthen community-based security initiatives, intelligence gathering, conflict-prevention mechanisms and support for victims of violence and disaster.

The communique reads: “The Forum reviewed the security situation across the country and expressed appreciation for the improved coordination between federal, state and local security structures, as well as the courage and sacrifices of security agencies and community volunteers. We then resolved to strengthen local security architecture in all the member states.

“The Forum commended Mr. President for the ongoing re-engineering in the security architecture of the country. Governors reiterated that safety of lives and property remains a non-negotiable obligation of government. We resolved to continue strengthening community-based security initiatives, intelligence gathering and conflict-prevention mechanisms, while supporting victims of violence and disaster.”

PGF undertook a review of the political, economic and social environment in the country, noting that the purpose of reforms must focus on improving lives, protecting citizens’ dignity and expanding opportunities for Nigerians.

The Forum hailed the president on his commitment to stabilising the economy and laying the foundations of sustainable growth through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Uzodimma said: “Recognising the temporary burdens that accompany necessary macro-economic reforms, the Forum reviewed the state of the economy and the cost-of-living pressures being experienced by citizens. Governors acknowledged the resilience and patience of Nigerians and expressed deep appreciation for the sacrifices being made in the collective interest of a stronger and more inclusive economy.

“We resolved to intensify state-level interventions in areas such as food production and distribution, support to small and medium-scale enterprises, youth employment, social protection for the poorest and most vulnerable, and targeted relief for workers and low-income households.

“The Progressive Governors are committed to work closely with federal institutions and local governments to ensure that things keep improving, that no group is left behind, and that the gains of reforms continue to translate into visible improvements in the quality of life of the people.”

The Forum noted the critical importance of infrastructure, urban renewal and rural development in driving productivity, attracting investment and improving living standards.

The governors commended Lagos State, particularly, for its pioneering role in transport reforms, urban regeneration and innovative financing models, and agreed to deepen peer-learning and inter-state collaboration in these areas.

The PGF resolved to scale up investments in roads, housing, public transport, water and sanitation, digital connectivity and climate-resilient infrastructure, with a focus on inclusion and access for all communities.

It emphasised that infrastructure must be designed and delivered in a manner that is socially just, environmentally responsible and responsive to the needs of the youth, women, persons with disabilities and other often-marginalised groups.

Uzodimma said: “The Forum reiterated that effective local governance is central to delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda at the grassroots. Governors resolved to deepen reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability and service delivery in local government administration, within the framework of the Constitution and in partnership with relevant stakeholders.

“We agreed to expand platforms for citizen engagement, including town hall meetings, consultation with traditional and religious leaders, civil society, labour, professional bodies, youth and women’s groups. The Forum affirmed that listening to the people, explaining government policies clearly, and adjusting implementation strategies based on feedback are essential to building trust and sustaining democratic legitimacy.”

The Forum also reiterated its unwavering loyalty to the APC, commending the leadership of the party for its efforts to strengthen internal democracy, discipline, reconciliation and inclusiveness.

The governors pledged to continue playing a stabilising role within the party, while ensuring that APC stayed focused on delivering on its mandate.

“The Forum reaffirmed its full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the policies of APC governments at all levels. PGF emphasised that Progressive Governors see themselves as trustees of the people’s mandate and as a committee of leaders jointly responsible for translating the aspirations of Nigerians into tangible social and economic outcomes across the federation.”

The Forum underscored the importance of social cohesion, inter-faith harmony and inter-ethnic understanding, urging leaders to use their voices and platforms to promote unity, moderation and respect, while isolating criminality and hate speech in all its forms.

By RABIU ISYAKU RABIU

During the public presentation of the book “Ten Years of Impactful Progressive Governance in Nigeria,” authored by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Executive Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Governor Hope Uzodimma, I reflected on Nigeria’s decade-long journey under successive progressive administrations as Chief Presenter. Though time did not allow me to deliver my written remarks, the message remains vital to our national conversation on leadership, governance, and reform.

There are moments for politics and moments for governance. Once elections are over, governance must take precedence. Our duty as citizens is to move beyond division and measure progress not by sentiment but by delivery, performance, and impact.

Over the past ten years, Nigeria’s story has been one of courage and continuity, of institutions learning discipline, and of leaders willing to face hard truths about our economy. President Muhammadu Buhari laid the foundation of fiscal prudence, agricultural revival, and infrastructure renewal. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has advanced that legacy through decisive structural reforms such as removing the fuel subsidy, unifying exchange rates, modernising tax policy, and restoring credibility to public finance. These choices were not easy, but they were necessary. They broke habits that had become too costly to sustain and redirected public wealth toward productivity.

Since May 2023, government non-oil revenue has grown by more than 400 per cent. This is not coincidence. It is the outcome of intentional policy and technological transparency. The Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee has simplified compliance, eliminated duplication, and placed technology at the centre of revenue collection. Revenue agencies that once competed now cooperate. Multiple taxation is being dismantled. Incentives for businesses are transparent and available online without intermediaries or privileged access. Every entrepreneur, large or small, can now apply for fiscal waivers or export credits within minutes. Fairness by design and technology is replacing favour by connection.

Energy stability has returned as proof that reform, though painful, delivers results. The queues that once defined our petrol stations are gone. Deregulation has reopened the downstream market and restored investor confidence in oil and gas, bringing new capital into deep-water, midstream, and modular-refinery projects. Parallel reforms in the Presidential CNG Initiative are changing urban mobility by replacing petrol fleets with cleaner and cheaper gas vehicles. At the same time, a nationwide solar-power rollout is providing electricity to schools, clinics, and small industries. Together, these initiatives reflect a balanced energy future built on efficiency, competition, and sustainability.

Security remains the foundation of every reform. In 2024, ₦3.85 trillion, about 13 per cent of the national budget, was allocated to defence and internal security. For 2025, that figure rose to ₦6.57 trillion, with significant investment in equipment, intelligence, and personnel welfare. The Nigerian Air Force is modernising with 24 M-346 attack jets and 10 AW-109 helicopters. The Navy has commissioned new patrol ships and maritime helicopters to strengthen coastal and energy-asset protection. Across all theatres, joint operations by the Nigerian Armed Forces and intelligence agencies have neutralised tens of thousands of terrorists, insurgents and criminal elements, arrested many more, and rescued tens of thousands of hostages and displaced persons. The tempo has changed. Our armed forces now take the initiative rather than wait for it.

Infrastructure remains the bridge between ambition and opportunity. Across the country, more than 260 major projects in roads, bridges, ports, and pipelines are under construction or near completion. The Lagos to Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto to Badagry Super Highway are redefining commerce and mobility. The national Bridge Fibre Project is expanding digital connectivity across cities and rural areas, strengthening the country’s broadband backbone and opening new corridors for education, innovation, and enterprise.

READ ALSO: Nigeria’s fake goods won’t kill you if you know your rights

Digital governance reform is also deepening national capacity. The ongoing overhaul of the National Identity Management Commission has expanded NIN registration to tens of millions of citizens, creating a reliable digital backbone for planning, financial inclusion, and social protection. For the first time, national data is being harmonised across agencies, improving service delivery, strengthening security coordination, and helping the country plan development with precision.

Work along the River Niger corridor from Lokoja to Baro Port is progressing to enable future inland-waterway operations that can reduce transport costs and improve market access across regions. These projects reflect a deliberate effort to balance regional growth, from the Niger Delta cleanup and gas expansion in the South to new exploration in the North and industrial corridors across the Middle Belt.

Reform without human investment is reform without soul. The $2.2 billion Health Sector Renewal Programme is upgrading 17,000 primary health centres and training 120,000 health workers, while free caesarean care and subsidised dialysis are easing the burden on families. In education, student-loan schemes, digital-skills initiatives, and new STEM and AI curricula are preparing our young people for a digital economy. Through the Student Loan Fund, access to higher education is becoming a right, not a privilege. Its synergy with new financing institutions such as CREDICORP and the Nigeria Credit Guarantee Company ensures that young Nigerians can pursue knowledge with the same confidence that entrepreneurs pursue capital. Free technical and vocational training at the tertiary level will supply the technicians and artisans required for industrial growth.

Agriculture and food security have become the centre of national resilience. Beyond grains, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is unlocking a trillion-naira value chain in meat, dairy, and leather. Expanded fertiliser blending, mechanisation, irrigation, and storage are supporting millions of smallholders. With increased investment in rice, cassava, and cash-crop processing, Nigeria is moving toward genuine food sovereignty. Food security is not an aspiration but a necessity for economic stability.

The government’s economic renewal is also anchored on access to finance, enterprise, and inclusion. The establishment of CREDICORP, the Nigeria Credit Guarantee Company, and the Student Loan Fund has strengthened the foundation for a credit-based economy as well as human capital and domestic productivity. Together, these institutions expand access to credit for small businesses, farmers, civil servants, individuals, and students while derisking lending and empowering citizens to build their future without political connections. In promoting local production over import dependence, the Nigeria First Policy is not only conserving foreign exchange but also creating pathways for skilled youth employment and industrial apprenticeship across states.

I say this not out of any search for appointment, business patronage, or reward, but from a place of patriotism and conviction. In any case, President Tinubu has made it possible for any Nigerian engaged in productive enterprise and producing goods in Nigeria, to get business patronage without knowing anyone. From where I stand, and for every Nigerian, the true beauty of the Nigeria First Policy is that it invites us all to become participants in our country’s renewal. We can each now go into productive enterprise and live the Nigerian dream, so long as we care enough to believe in this nation and invest in our people, resources, and future.

In the midst of reform, President Tinubu’s words have been both compass and caution: “As we continue to reform the economy, I shall always listen to the people and will never turn my back on you.” That statement captures the essence of progressive governance which I define as courage guided by compassion. Under this directive, Nigeria’s social-protection system has been rebuilt on transparency and technology. The Conditional Cash Transfer programme now reaches more than 15 million households on a verified digital register, each linked to a NIN-validated wallet or bank account for direct payment. No intermediaries and no leakages. In addition, ₦344 billion has been disbursed in three tranches to the 36 states and the FCT to support local welfare and enterprise programmes. The Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, which will operate across 8,809 wards, will economically engage over 10 million Nigerians and ensure that national policy translates into local opportunity.

The humanitarian principle of progressivism is simple. Reform must lift, not leave behind. Fiscal discipline restores credibility. Social investment restores trust. When citizens see roads being built, hospitals working, and social payments arriving on time, faith in reform deepens and the social contract is strengthened. Special attention is also being given to women, rural communities, and persons with disabilities through targeted enterprise and skills-support initiatives under the Renewed Hope framework.

The numbers also tell their own story of impact and renewed hope in Nigeria. Non-oil revenues continue to rise. Exports are diversifying. Nigeria has recorded its first trade and balance-of-payments surplus in years, a sign of growing production and renewed confidence in the naira. Oil output is improving, new investments are flowing into the upstream and midstream segments, and our current account is gaining strength as reforms take hold. President Bola Tinubu and his government recognise that inflation and living costs remain a strain on households, but the fiscal discipline now taking root is designed to restore purchasing power in a sustainable way. President Tinubu has also acknowledged that meaningful reform takes time. While citizens are beginning to see the first trickles of progress, the greater task is to ensure that these trickles flow downward to communities, markets, classrooms, and farms where growth becomes tangible and human.

The task ahead is to sustain this momentum but it won’t be easy. Every child must be in school. NIWA must be further strengthened to expand partnerships for safer and cleaner waterways. NDLEA must receive greater support to combat the rising threat of drug trafficking and addiction, and NAFDAC must be empowered with stronger laboratories and technology to protect the public from counterfeit medicines and unsafe food. These are not peripheral agencies. They are frontline guardians of national wellbeing, and their effectiveness determines the credibility of our progress.

Communities themselves must also understand that with all the support given to our security agencies and the military, their partnership is vital. Cooperation between citizens, traditional institutions, and security operatives will solidify these gains, strengthen intelligence at the grassroots, and prevent a return to disorder. National security is not the burden of the state alone. It is the shared duty of all Nigerians determined to protect their future.

The state governors of Nigeria, under this Renewed Hope and progressive compact, also have a historic role to play. We have faith that with President Tinubu’s commitment, they can write their names in gold, but that gold must first be mined in proper service of the people.

The progress of any nation is not measured only by its wealth, but by the collective will of its people to do right, even when it is hard. That is the essence of progressive governance and the covenant that must bind us for the next decade.

I imagine a Nigeria where every child learns, every farmer prospers, every hospital has power, and every young person earns a dignified living. That is the spirit of renewal behind this progressive decade. It is the belief that courage and compassion are not opposites but partners in building a fair and prosperous country. Tomorrow’s Nigeria is not waiting to be discovered. It is waiting to be delivered with courage, competence, and care. I am Rabiu Isyaku Rabiu and I endorse the publication of this message.

God bless our President.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday in Owerri, Imo State, blasted those peddling allegations of religious genocide in the country, saying no religion is under siege.

He said the allegations were unfounded and misleading, as citizens focused more on harmony and shared prosperity.

The president noted that Nigerians, after 65 years of Independence, had grown to appreciate religious and cultural differences and explored the advantages of diversity in terms of educational, economic, and other productive gains.

President Tinubu allayed fears of religious intolerance in the country at the unveiling of a book on the 10 years of the APC government in Nigeria. It was authored by the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma.

President Tinubu commissioned the Owerri-Mbaise-Umahia road, the Assumpta Twin flyover, and the Emmanuel Iwuayanwu Convention Centre.

The APC national chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, two former APC chairmen – Adams Oshiomhole and Umar Ganduje -, governors of APC states, and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, attended the inauguration of the projects and the book launch.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Speaker, Deputy Senate President, former Senate Presidents, Sen. Pius Anyim Pius, and Sen. Ahmad Lawan, were also at the event.

Others include the founding chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, and former Governor of Ogun State, Segun Osoba, as well as traditional and religious leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, student unions, and market associations.

President Tinubu told the crowd at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Convention Centre: “Let me also say this clearly, Nigeria is a proud, sovereign nation built on the faith and resilience of its people. Here, no faith is under siege, no community is excluded. Our churches, mosques, and traditional shrines stand side by side – not as rivals, but as symbols of the unity that binds us.

“We must never allow outsiders to tell us who we are or sow division among us. We are Nigerians, and we will stand together. Nigeria will not accept lectures from those who seek to profit from our divisions. No one loves this country more than Nigerians themselves, and no one will define us except us.

“Our duty is to stand guard over our unity, protect every citizen, and continue to prove to the world that our diversity is not our weakness, but our strength and when Nigeria stands united, no falsehood can prosper against her. So help us God,” he added.

On the impact of the All Progressives Congress in running Nigeria since 2015, President Tinubu said: “Nigeria is no longer where it was ten years ago. We promised a change, and I can confidently tell you the worst is over.

“Ten years ago, our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), came into power on the wings of change. Nigeria was at a crossroads. A break from the old order was not only desirable; it had become inevitable to steer our nation away from collapse.

“Under President Muhammadu Buhari, our party began stabilising Nigeria. We invested heavily in infrastructure, pushed back terrorists, and instilled accountability in public finance. Were there challenges? Yes. Were mistakes made? Yes. But no one can deny that the direction of Nigeria changed for good,” he added.

“APC may not be perfect, but we are purposeful. And we will not allow Nigeria to return to the wasted years of drift,” the President said.

“We are not yet where we want to be, but we are no longer where we were. We are building a Nigeria that values productivity above handouts and is a nation prepared for a sustainable future.”

The president has a message for the critics of the APC administration: “And to those who today parade themselves as prophets of solutions, let me say this: those who wasted sixteen years had their chance. Nigerians remember the broken promises, the broken power plants, the broken roads and the attempts to usurp democratic institutions using corrupt practices and subterfuge.”

President Tinubu commended Governor Uzodimma for his scholarship documenting this decade of progressive governance.

“Hope has given Nigeria a gift: a reminder that nations must write their own stories, and leaders must account for their stewardship,” he said.

The president stated that the outlook for the economy had improved across various indicators.

“I am honoured to stand here in Owerri, in the heart of the South-East, a land of industry, intellect, and resilience. I know there were times when this region felt left out. But under Renewed Hope, no part of Nigeria will be abandoned. The South-East is not on the margins; you are at the centre of our national rebirth.

“Believing in true federalism and decentralisation, I have created regional development commissions to bring progress closer to the people. Nigerians have the right to hold leaders at every level (federal, state, and local) accountable. And as leaders, we have the duty to deliver,” he added.

The president of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, thanked the President for the initiative of NELFUND, which had encouraged more underprivileged children to pursue their education in higher institutions.

“Mr President, you have given hope to many young people through the Education funds you provide. You have invested in agriculture to provide food for millions of Nigerians.

“On behalf of the entire National Assembly, we want to congratulate the performing governor,” the Senate President said.

The governor of Imo State, who is also the chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, stated that the sub-national governments had consistently received increased allocations, enabling infrastructure construction and improving sectors such as education and health.

“Mr President, we are grateful for your support. It is through your courage and bold policies that our economy is stabilised today. Most of the projects we undertake in Imo are made possible by the continuous funding we receive from time to time.

“Your consistency in the political trajectory of Nigeria made it possible for the formation of APC, which became a force in the build-up to the 2015 elections. This inspired me to document all these remarkable efforts into a book titled “A Decade of Leadership in Nigeria”.

Prof. Benett Chima Nwanguma reviewed the book.
