In question is “Case Number: REF/2023/0155, BETWEEN: Tali Shani (Applicant) v. Chief Mike Agbedor Abu Ozekhome (Respondent) over 79, Randall Avenue, London NW2 7SX.”

In a statement by its chairman, Prof. Babafemi A. Badejo, the NBA Anti-Corruption Committee, declared that the case raised several improprieties that required investigations on the authenticity of the judgement that had been widely circulated, as well as an investigation of the actions of the legal practitioners on the roll of the Supreme Court of Nigeria who were mentioned in the said proceedings.

“It is hoped that after investigations the relevant Legal Practitioners would be promptly referred to the LPDC,” the committee said.

It said investigations into the processes that resulted in the alleged procurement of fake NIN, fraudulent presentation of an MTN number, fake ECOWAS passport, etc., “all aimed at the failed creations of fake male and female persons claiming to be Tali Shani, should lead to the criminal prosecutions of many civil servants who connived with lawyers to tarnish the name of Nigeria.”

The committee stated further: “Judge Paton concluded that late Lt. General Jeremiah Useni had acquired the property in a shady manner using a name very similar to the one he used in the 1.9 million pounds case that was decided at the Royal Court of Jersey in the case of Attorney-General v. Useni that was decided in 2022. On the basis of the said decision in the UK, we call on the Attorney-General of the Federation to enter Nigeria’s interest in the said property towards the possibility of restitution.”

The committee said it was aware of many highly publicized cases that were swept under the rug in the past, once the search light of the media had been removed.

It said it hoped that such would not be the case this time around.

“The credibility and sustainability of legal sector in Nigeria is at stake,” it warned.

The committee recommended that Dr. George Ekpungu, Esq., Alternate Chairman of the national NBA Anti-Corruption Committee and Mr. Bayo Akinlade, Esq., Chairman, Ikorodu Branch, NBA Anti-Corruption Committee, be added to the investigations being put in place by the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau confirmed this in a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Gyang Bere, on Thursday in Jos.

Mutfwang said that Useni, who also represented Plateau South Senatorial District between 2015 and 2019, died at the age of 82.

The governor also confirmed that the former FCT minister under Gen. Sani Abacha’s government, died on Thursday after a protracted illness.

Mutfwang, who described Useni’s demise as a huge loss to Plateau, urged his immediate family and residents of the state in general to take solace in God.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to the President, the Armed Forces and Tarok nation over the loss of this distinguished elder statesman.

“I wish to also extend my condolences to his immediate family and relations.

“I call on them to take solace in God in this trying time,” Bere quoted Mutfwang as saying.

The deceased also served as Minister of Transport and Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, among many other appointments during his military career.

After retirement, Useni ventured into politics where he served as deputy chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party and senator.

He was also the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Plateau during the 2019 general elections.

Director-General of NBC, Balarabe Shehu llelah, gave the warning in a letter to the Chief Executive Officer of Arise Global Limited and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja.

In the letter titled “Preponderance of derogatory and incendiary remarks: Final warning”, Ilelah said the commission had observed with concern, the preponderance of incendiary remarks allowed on Arise News.

“This letter once again seeks to underscore the tremendous responsibility put on the broadcaster to manage array of guests that may feature on the station from time to time.

“For the benefit of doubt, on Oct. 5 during the programme – ‘The Morning Show’, anchored by Reuben Abati, Rufai Useni and Ayo Mairo Ese, featured Oladotun Hassan and Dele Farotimi as guests.

“The programme contained unguarded incendiary remarks by Dele Farotimi against the legislature, executive, judiciary and Mr President.

“Similarly, on Oct. 6, during the programme “Newsday”, it featured Kenneth Okonkwo (Spokesperson for Labour Party) who used derogatory remarks on air.

“Your attention is therefore drawn to the relevant sections of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code for compliance please,” Ilelah said.

The NBC boss explained further that section 1.10.3 says the broadcaster shall ensure that its presenter does not express his or her opinion in the programme, as a matter of professional standard.

He said section 3.3.1 (a) stipulates that the broadcaster shall ensure that any information given in a programme, in whatever form, is accurate.

Ilelah said 3.3.3 (c) provided that the broadcaster shall be above inherent biases, prejudices and subjective mindsets.

According to section 3.3.1(e), the Broadcaster shall not treat any individual or organisation in an unjust and unfair manner in any programme.

The NBC boss further explained that section 5.3.3(b) of the code stated that the broadcaster shall, in using political materials for news and current affairs programmes, avoid hate speech, inflammatory, derogatory, and divisive remarks of allusions.

“Section 5.5.6 says, the broadcaster shall have a delay mechanism to guard against possible undesirable content.

“Arise TV is advised to install a delay mechanism to guard against possible undesirable contents as prescribed in Section 5.5.6 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

“Please note that henceforth, your station shall be held liable for any infraction on your platform and applicable sanctions shall be imposed as prescribed by Law,” Ilelah stressed.
