The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

He said the officers on a fact finding mission were on February 23 ambushed while others on rescue mission were also ambushed, resulting in the death of six police officers.

Adejobi said the arrest followed intensive investigative efforts of police operatives.

According to him, five suspects were initially arrested shortly after the incident while additional three were apprehended at different locations.

He said the arrest of the additional three followed statements and cooperation of those initially arrested five suspects.

Adejobi said the suspects were currently in police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.

He said the Nigeria Police Force was committed to ensuring that all those responsible for the murder and other similar crimes were arrested and brought to justice swiftly and decisively.

The police spokesman said the suspects would soon have their day in court, with credible evidence, once investigations were concluded.

He said the Police were deeply saddened by the heinous act of violence against its officers who were diligently performing their duty to protect and serve the community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers during this difficult time.

“We wish to reiterate that killers of our officers in this extant case and many others have murdered peace and none of them will go unpunished,” he said.

The officers, who were on duty in Ughelli area of the state were killed on February 23 and 26, with six others missing.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Delta Command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the development to newsmen on Sunday in Warri.

“Yes, he (police officer) followed his principal (not named) to the church,” the PPRO said.

An eyewitness said that the gunmen allegedly stormed a Pentecostal church located in Oviri-Ogor Road, Ughelli in the Ughelli North local government area of the state, during worship service on Sunday and shot the victim thrice.

The deceased, a police inspector, was said to have been serving at PMF 31, Ogwashi-Uku and was on escort duty at the time of the incident.

“The service was abruptly stopped at about 11.15 a.m. when gunshots rented the air inside the church premises and worshippers scampered for safety.

“It was after the gunmen escaped that some youths summoned up the courage to come out only to discover the police officer in a pool of his blood,” the source said.

The source added that the policeman was confirmed dead at the Central Hospital, Ughelli, were he was rushed to for medical attention.

He admonished politicians to always give for the propagation of the gospel and the development of the church, pointing out that they must give with a sincere heart to enable them attract more blessings from God.

Okowa said everyone would be judged by God based on how they lived their lives on earth, and urged them to be reconciled with Jesus and make holiness a lifestyle if they must be with the Lord in eternity.

While congratulating the spiritual head of the Saint Lazarus Christ Church, Ughelli, on the successful completion of the church auditorium, Governor Okowa promised to partner with him in the propagation of the gospel.

In a sermon, the South South chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN, Bishop God-Dowell Avwomakpa, said Christians should impact on the lives of people around them especially in the church.

Bishop Awomakpa said just like the Centurion in the scriptures who exhibited an unusual kind of faith which led to the instant healing of his servant, Christians should build their faith in God to secure their future.

In his remark the General Overseer and Spiritual Head of Saint Lazarus Christ Church, the Most Reverend Jonathan Arhavwarien, thanked Okowa for his support to the church and promised to always pray for his victory in next year’s election.
