The chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made this known, saying the Nigerian Embassy in Uganda made the demand for the investigation.

In a statement, Dabiri-Erewa stated that “this is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover up at all. This is so sad!

“The Nigerian government will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation. May his soul Rest in Peace and God give the family the fortitude to bear this loss.”

Already, the “Kajjansi Police Division say they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Nigerian national Abubakar Lawal, a professional footballer at Vipers Sports Club, who was claimed to have fallen from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade on the morning of February 24, 2025.

Preliminary reports indicate that Lawal arrived at the shopping mall in his vehicle, registration number UBQ 695G, to meet his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national residing in room 416 since February 20, 2025.

Nigeria will battle Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania in the group phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Morocco.

This is the outcome of draw held at the Mohamed V Theatre in Rabat on Monday.

The Super Eagles now have just 11 months to prepare for the 35th AFCON finals, with the tournament scheduled to hold between December 21 to January 18, 2026.

The three-time champions must navigate Group C that also houses Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles, the Cranes of Uganda and the Taifa Stars of Tanzania.

The Eagles are expected to open their campaign with a game against the Taifa Stars.

As hosts of the AFCON for the first time ever, in 1980, the Eagles battled the Taifa Stars in the tournament opening match.

The Tanzanian team was complete with their highly-rated team captain, Leodegar Tenga, and the enigmatic goalkeeper Jona Pondamali.

Nigeria won 3-1 and went ahead to win their first continental title.

READ ALSO: Why we decided to leave APC –Aregbesola’s group

Then, 20 years later, as co-hosts (with Ghana), Nigeria played Tunisia in their first match of the tournament, beating the Carthage Eagles 4-2 in Lagos.

The Eagles went all the way to the final, losing to Cameroon only after a penalty shootout.

The Carthage Eagles pipped the Super Eagles by a lone goal in the Round of 16 at the finals in Cameroon, three years ago, to end the sweet run of the three-time champions.

Uganda have always proved a tough nut to crack for Nigeria, including a 2-1 win over the Eagles at the 1978 finals in Ghana that condemned Nigeria to the third-place match.

Nigeria won that third-place match after Tunisia abandoned the match in the 42nd minute.

Hosts and 1976 winners Morocco are drawn in Group A alongside 2012 champions Zambia, 1972 runners-up Mali and Comoros that will be playing in only their second championship.

Cup holders Cote d’Ivoire are in Group F and must negotiate a tricky pool that also has five-time champions Cameroon, Gabon and Mozambique.

Seven-time winners Egypt are at war with 1996 hosts and champions South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe in Group B, which somewhat looks like the “group of death”.

Senegal who are the 2021 winners are at loggerheads with two-time winners Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin Republic and Botswana in Group D, while 1990 and 2019 winners Algeria will confront Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and Sudan in Group E.

Full Draw

GROUP A: Morocco, Mali, Zambia, Comoros

GROUP B: Egypt, South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe

GROUP C: Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda, Tanzania

GROUP D: Senegal, DR Congo, Benin Republic, Botswana

GROUP E: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan

GROUP F: Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Gabon, Mozambique.

They defeated their Ugandan counterparts 2-0 in the semi-finals of their match at Cape Coast Stadium.

The Falconets have therefore boosted their quest to clinch the gold medal in their event.

Monday encounter was closely contested with both teams vying for a spot in the finals.

Falconets, had beaten Morocco 2-0 in their first match before a 4-0 humbling of Senegal in their second Group B game to qualify for the semi-finals.

Both teams had pushed for a breakthrough in the first half of the match which ended goalless.

Substitutes, Adaobi Okoh and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, scored the goals that lifted the Nigerians over Ugandans for a place in the finals of the African Games 2023.

The Uganda fought well until Okoh, who replaced Olushola Shobowale, found the back of the net in the 74th minute with her first touch in the game.

Okwuchukwu added the second goal in the 89th minute to give Nigeria the desired victory.

The Falconets will face the winner of the second semi-finals between hosts, Ghana, and Senegal.

The loser in the second semi-finals will meet Uganda in the bronze medal match of the women’s football event.

Falconets won the gold medal in the event at the 12th African Games in Rabat, Morocco, in 2019.

The 13th African Games, which started March 8, will be rounded off on March 23.

The ongoing games are being held across three cities: Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast.

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria began their campaign in the men’s football event at the 13th African Games in Ghana, with a shock 2-1 defeat to their less fancied Ugandan counterparts.

The opening Group B match was played at the University of Ghana Sport Stadium, Legion.

The Ladan Bosso’s tutored side went behind, but fought back only to succumb at the end of the game.

The Junior Cranes of Uganda showed their intentions early, taking the lead in the 34th minute through Arafat Usama.

The Nigerian side replied almost immediately with Sadiq Isiyaka equalizing with a cool finish in the 37th minute.

On resumption of the second half, the Ugandans kept piling pressure on the Nigerian defence, with Ivan Irinimbabazi eventually getting the winning goal in the 81st minute.

Flying Eagles coach, Ladan Bosso, after the match said the team would correct the mistakes noticed ahead of their next match.

“We would have a positive meeting with the players, it is important that they express themselves,” Bosso explained.

“Logically we would have liked to have started (the tournament) in another way, but the players are clear that there are two games ahead that could make so much difference.

“Anyone has the possibility of being a starter – I’m optimistic the players know what they stand to achieve and the task ahead.

“We talked about football with the group, about how we can improve the mistakes we had and thus move on with a positive mentality.

“We know what we have to do in the upcoming games, which is to go out and look for victory, we are prepared for that.

“For every player, being in the national team is a dream, we did not start the way we wanted, but we will continue fighting for that dream that we all have,” Bosso said.

Nigeria will next lock horns with Senegal on Monday at the same venue to rekindle their hopes of qualifying from the group.

Nigeria finished as runners-up (Silver) in the men’s football event at the 12th African Games in Rabat, Morocco, narrowly losing to Burkina Faso in the final.

A shipment of Ebola vaccine candidates set to be used in a clinical trial has arrived in Uganda, where an outbreak has infected 142 people and killed at least 56, health authorities said on Thursday.

Last week, Uganda said it had discharged its last Ebola patient from hospital, raising hopes for the end of an outbreak of the deadly haemorrhagic fever declared on September 20.

Health ministry spokesman Emmanuel Ainebyoona said the vaccine candidates had arrived, and added that the health minister was expected to announce the start date of trials later on Thursday.

There are currently no licensed vaccines for the Sudan strain of the virus that caused the infections in Uganda, although there are several candidate vaccines that appear to be suitable for evaluation, the World Health Organization says.

The WHO has said it would send three vaccine candidates to Uganda to be used in a trial, one by the University of Oxford and Serum Institute of India, another by the Sabin Vaccine Institute, and a third by Merck & Co Inc.

Existing vaccines combat the more common Zaire strain, which spread during recent outbreaks in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ebola causes vomiting, diarrhoea, and bleeding from all body orifices, and spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of those infected.

Health officials have previously said everything was in place for the trials to start and they were only waiting for the doses to arrive.

The World Health Organisation, WHO, has confirmed 63 cases of Ebola Virus infection, including 29 deaths in Uganda, calling for clinical trials of new vaccines in the country.

WHO Director General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, gave the confirmation at a news conference at the UN health agency’s headquarters in Geneva on Wednesday.

According to him, WHO is working diligently in Uganda to support the government in responding to an Ebola outbreak in four districts.

Ghebreyesus said 10 infected health workers, four of whom had died; and four people had recovered and were receiving follow-up care.

“WHO has released 2 million dollars from our Contingency Fund for Emergencies, CFE, and we’re…sending additional specialists, supplies, and resources,” he said.

READ ALSO: Nigeria on alert mode as Ebola resurfaces in Uganda —NCDC

Although the inoculations that curbed Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are not effective against the strain active now in Uganda, two vaccines in development could begin clinical trials in the coming weeks, pending government approval.

In a related development, Ghebreyesus said although the deadly flood waters in Pakistan had stopped rising, the dangers were surging.

“More than 1,500 lives were lost in the floods, but many more could be lost to disease in the coming weeks, without a massive and urgent international response,” he warned.

The country’s catastrophic flooding has damaged approximately 10 per cent of its health facilities, leaving millions without access to medical care, supplies and access to services.

Amidst new outbreaks of malaria, cholera, and dengue, WHO is focusing on supporting people in camps, those living along the roadside, individuals cut off by flood waters, and populations returning to their destroyed villages and homes.

In addition to 10 million dollars released from the CFE, WHO issued an appeal for 81.5 million dollars to support immunisations and other life-saving health services in response to the unprecedented disaster.

Several European countries are reporting an increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations, and deaths, he told the journalists.

According to him, Omicron remains the dominant variant globally.

The WHO chief said while more than 300 sub-variants were being tracked globally, weak surveillance, testing and sequencing made tracking the virus, like chasing shadows.

Meanwhile, he noted that influenza season was starting in the Northern hemisphere.

Measures to curb COVID-19 also help reduce the flu and he reminded everyone to get flu vaccine.

After years of declining cholera cases, “a worrying upsurge” of deadly outbreaks across the world has emerged over the past year – including in 27 countries since January.

According to limited data, the senior UN official said the average case fatality rate so far this year, is almost three times that of the past five years.

“In Syria, more than 10,000 suspected cases of cholera have been reported just in the past six weeks.

“And in Haiti, after more than three years with no cases of cholera, two cases have been officially reported this week,” said Ghebreyesus.

He acknowledged that many could not access simple interventions, such as vaccines, safe water and sanitation, oral rehydration or antibiotics for more severe cases.

“Cholera thrives on poverty and conflict but is now being turbo-charged by climate change, while those drivers also reduce access to clean water and create the ideal environment for cholera to spread,” he explained.

The Nigerian team, after their opening 71-79 loss to Cape Verde on Friday when the window one of matches began, had gone on to beat Mali 72-70 on Saturday.

The resurgence saw them taking control of the group on Sunday with an overwhelming defeat of the East Africans.

The FIBA world-ranked 23 team took the game by the cuff from the jump-ball at the City Arena in the Angolan city of Benguela by winning the first quarter 25-18.

The second quarter was almost a replica of the first, with a 28-19 win, while D’Tigers strolled through the third quarter 14-8.

The fourth quarter saw the Ugandans fighting back harder in order to restore some prestige, but the Nigerian side were unstoppable for them as they won 28-24.

Team leader Ike Diogu was again inspirational with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

16 African teams are competing in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 African Qualifiers through five tournament windows over 15 months.

The Qualifiers run from November 2021 to February 2023, with five African national teams earning a spot in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

The World Cup is scheduled for August 25 to September 10, 2023 in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The second window of the first round of qualifiers will open in February.

Gunmen seized at least two villages overnight in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo near the border with Uganda and Rwanda, a local official and an activist group said on Monday.

Lt.-Col. Muhindo Luanzo, the assistant to the administrator of Rutshuru territory, blamed fighters from the M23, a rebel group that seized large swathes of territory in 2012 and 2013.

The two villages, Tshanzu and Runyoni, were the last redoubts of the M23 before they were chased by Congolese and United Nations forces into Uganda and Rwanda in 2013.

Since then, there have been regional efforts to demobilise the fighters, but the group has complained about the slow pace at which a peace accord had been implemented, and some had returned to Congo.

It was not immediately possible to confirm the identity of the armed men who took over the two villages.

M23 officials and spokespeople for Congo’s army and the government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Luanzo said the gunmen stormed Tshanzu and Runyoni simultaneously at around 11.00 p.m. on Sunday night.

“Now, our troops are conducting counter-attack operations because during the night they identified the enemy coming from Rwanda,’’ Luanzo told Reuters by telephone.

U.N. investigators have accused Rwanda and Uganda, which intervened militarily in Congo during two regional wars two decades ago, of supporting the M23.

The two countries deny this.

A local activist group reported clashes with light and heavy weapons on Sunday night that forced people out of their homes and across the border at Bunagana into Uganda.

“Uganda is experiencing an influx of refugees from DR-Congo,’’ said Irene Nakasiita from Uganda’s Red Cross society.

On Sunday evening the U.S. issued a security alert, warning of a potential attack on the provincial capital of Goma, which is around 50 kilometres (31 miles) to the southwest of the two villages.

The U.S. then advised its personnel to shelter in place.

All major streets in Goma were later filled with soldiers, a Reuters journalist said.

Nigeria’s D’Tigers on Tuesday ended their 2021 FIBA AfroBasket campaign on a sour note with a 68-80 loss to lowly-rated Uganda in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Nigerian senior men’s basketball team who were the competition’s champions in 2015 had qualified for this qualification to Quarter-Finals fixture by finishing second from Group C.

But at the Kigali Arena on Tuesday against Uganda, who finished the group phase as Group D’s third-placed team, the Nigerian side simply failed to come to the party.

They lost 12-24 and 19-20 in the first two sets to trail by 13 points in the opening half.

After an 18-23 loss in the third quarter further worsened their situation to trail by 18 points, they fought back to win the fourth quarter 19-13.

This was however a little too late as Uganda went away with a 12-point lead to advance into the competition’s quarter-finals where they will face Cape Verde on Thursday.

Nigeria’s top performer in the game against Uganda was Uzodinma Utomi.

He scored 23 points, with three rebounds, two assists, one steal and two blocks.

Andrew Edogi also had seven rebounds, and Ikenna Ndugba six assists.

In other qualification to Quarter-Finals fixtures played on Monday, Angola had beaten Egypt 70-62 to book a Wednesday quarter-final meeting with Senegal.

Also, Guinea beat hosts Rwanda 72-68 to advance to a quarter-final meeting with Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday.

The last quarter-final fixture will hold on Thursday with Tunisia taking on the winners of the South Sudan versus Kenya fixture which was ongoing later on Tuesday.

The competition, which now holds every four years, will end on Sunday.
