The Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, has said that Nigeria and Türkiye have reached an agreement for the immediate deployment of 200 Nigerian Special Forces for training in Türkiye.

Musa disclosed this in an interview on the sidelines of the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF2026) in Antalya, Türkiye, on Saturday, following discussions with his Turkish counterpart, Yasar Guler.

The three-day forum, themed: “Mapping Tomorrow, Managing Uncertainties,” which started on Friday, is attended by world leaders, ministers, and diplomats, among others.

The minister explained that following the agreement, Türkiye had allocated a training quota of 200 personnel from Nigeria’s Special Forces, who will be immediately deployed on his return to Nigeria.

“We have a Special Forces training agreement. Türkiye has agreed to give us 200 Special Forces training, so as soon as I return, we are sending them here for training.

“We will continue to do a lot. There will be exercises. The first exercise is coming up later in the year. So, in so many areas of defence we are going to work together,” he said.

The minister also disclosed that Nigeria and Türkiye had both agreed on joint defence equipment production and the transfer of military technology.

Musa said that Nigeria and Türkiye had come a long way, working together over the years, adding that, “since 1960 Türkiye has been like family to Nigeria.”

According to him, Türkiye has a lot of defence experience from which Nigeria could learn through shared experiences.

“I’ve had a meeting with the Turkish Minister of Defence, where we shared a lot of ideas on how to improve on our relationship, defence-wise.

“Türkiye has improved dramatically with regard to the production of military hardware.

“Nigeria is still developing, and we have agreed that we are going to partner together so that we have a co-production of some of these items,” he said.

The minister noted that while Nigeria had been fighting asymmetric warfare against insurgency for about 17 years, Türkiye had had a similar experience of fighting against terrorism for 40 years.

He added: “Because of that, we will move into training, production and improving on our defence, industrial production, and exchange of officers and soldiers.”

The annual event also featured panel discussions and sessions covering a wide range of topics shaped by contemporary global defence and security, political, economic, environmental, and technological dynamics.

Participants from about 150 countries, including 5,000 decision-makers, 20 heads of state and government, 40 foreign ministers, 60 invited foreign media, and diplomats, among others, attended the forum.

Türkiye has announced that it will release 11.6 million barrels of crude oil from its strategic reserves as part of the International Energy Agency’s largest-ever coordinated stockpile release.

The country’s Energy and Natural Resources minister, Alparslan Bayraktar, made this known on Thursday.

A national oil stock committee approved the release, which will take place gradually over 90 days, Bayraktar said during a visit to a coal mine in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak.

“We decided to release 11.6 million barrels from our strategic reserves in support of the IEA’s coordinated release of 400 million barrels,” he told reporters.

IEA earlier on Wednesday recommended that members release a combined 400 million barrels from national stockpiles the largest coordinated action in the agency’s history.

According to Executive Director Fatih Birol, IEA, has 32 member countries and 13 association countries representing roughly 75 per cent of global energy demand.

The coordinated release came amid conflict in the Middle East that has drastically reduced oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz including imports from Iran.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Republic of Türkiye, on Tuesday in Ankara, said his country targeted a $5 billion trade volume with Nigeria, adding that discussions to actualise that had already commenced.

President Erdogan stated this during a joint press briefing with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the Nigerian President’s State Visit.

At present, the trade volume between the two nations is about $2 billion.

Turkey exports planes, helicopters, machinery, iron and steel, and chemical products to Nigeria.

Nigeria exports crude oil and agricultural products to Türkiye.

President Erdogan said the establishment of the Joint Economy and Trade Committee between the two countries would create opportunities to expand Turkish investments in Nigeria to realise the target.

President Erdogan praised the commitment of President Tinubu to develop Nigeria and highlighted the presence of several ministers and high-ranking officials as the most unambiguous indication of this political determination:

“Today, we conducted a comprehensive review of our relations with the esteemed President and his delegation in the fields of trade, investments, energy, education and defence industry.

“Firstly, we see that we have significant potential in the fields of trade and investment. In today’s meetings, our commitment is to the $5 billion trade volume target, and we discussed the steps needed.

“We also discussed opportunities to support our investments in Nigeria. We believe that the joint Economy and Trade Committee, which we agreed to establish today, will be instrumental in this regard.”

President Erdogan hailed the Nigerian president’s strides in the energy sector, which has resulted in the restructuring of the country’s economy.

He hoped that the cooperation between the Turkish Petroleum Corporation, their Nigerian counterparts, and organisations would yield the expected outcomes.

President Erdogan promised to assist Nigeria in tackling insurgency, given its history with a similar problem.

“Terrorist organisations emerging, particularly in Africa’s Sahel region, unfortunately, pose a threat to the peace of the entire continent. We stand by the friendly people of Nigeria in their fight against terrorism under the leadership of President Tinubu.

“In fact, today, we addressed opportunities for closer cooperation in the fields of military training and intelligence. We stated that we are ready to share our country’s significant experience in combating terrorism.

“Also, I believe that we will soon see positive outcomes from the meetings that Nigerian officials will hold with our leading defence industry companies during this visit,” he said.

In his remarks, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Republic of Türkiye for its openness and willingness to collaborate in promoting global freedom, stability, and prosperity.

He emphasised the importance of creating an inclusive economy, particularly focusing on vulnerable people.

President Tinubu commended the Turkish leader for being “willing to collaborate, willing to help, willing to work together to promote freedom, stability and prosperity, shared prosperity across the world.

“What is very important to the countries being discussed, trade, business, no restrictions, giving opportunity to those who are ready to learn to work and prosper. How do we build an inclusive economy together? How do we reform the economy and involve vulnerable people? How do we ensure peace in the world?” he asked.

President Tinubu stressed that Nigeria would continue to play a significant role in promoting peace and stability in Africa despite security challenges in some parts of the country.

“We discussed efforts against terrorism. We discussed how to defeat agents of destabilisation.”

President Tinubu also praised President Erdogan for his commitment towards promoting global peace, particularly his efforts in Somalia.

At the end of the bilateral meeting, officials from the two countries signed nine agreements.

They were: Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Diaspora Policy; Agreement on Defence Cooperation; Joint Declaration Establishing the Economy and Trade Joint Committee; and Agreement in the Field of Halal Quality Infrastructure.

Others include Cooperation in the Field of Higher Education; Cooperation in the Field of Media and Communication; Cooperation in the Field of Education; Cooperation Between the Republic of Türkiye, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diplomacy Academy, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Affairs Academy; and Cooperation Between the Republic of Türkiye, Ministry of Social services and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ministry of women Affairs and Social Development.

Nigeria and Turkey

On Monday this week President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departs for a two-day official visit to the Republic of Türkiye. The stated agenda—military cooperation and trade partnership—is precise. But the subtext is broader: Nigeria is recalibrating its partnerships toward countries that combine strategic geography, industrial depth, security capability, and an instinct for pragmatic diplomacy.

Few nations fit that description as naturally as Türkiye, making this visit not just a sentimental jaunt but a strategic engagement, strengthening our official ties, since Turkey established diplomatic presence in Nigeria in 1962.

Türkiye: Where Civilizations Converge

Long before modern states, the lands that form present-day Türkiye were the arteries of human civilization—bordering Mesopotamia, linking ancient empires, and serving as the world’s crossroads between Europe and Asia. Today, Türkiye remains the only major power that physically straddles two continents, controlling maritime gateways that connect the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, and the global trade lanes.

Geography has always been destiny. For Africa—and for Nigeria in particular—Türkiye’s location is not symbolic; it is operational. It is a bridge to Europe, a corridor to the Middle East, and a springboard to Central and Far-East Asia.

So, Istanbul is not just a city; it is a gateway. For Nigerian exporters, investors, students, and logistics operators, Istanbul is increasingly the shortest route from Africa to global markets.

By President Tinubu departing on this State Visit, the Nigerian leader is not just choosing a country to visit. Nigeria is choosing a corridor to traverse. And that corridor runs through Türkiye.

Why Nigeria Is Turning to Türkiye

The President is visiting with the mindset that Nigeria’s reform trajectory—industrialization, security stabilization, trade diversification, and technology transfer—requires partners who do not merely sell products, but build systems.

Türkiye brings four strategic advantages:

Industrial Capability: From construction to defense manufacturing, textiles, energy equipment, and rail systems, Türkiye is one of the most industrialized economies bridging emerging and developed markets.

Defense and Security Depth: Türkiye has become a global supplier of cost-effective, battle-tested military platforms—from drones and armored vehicles to surveillance systems. For Nigeria, confronting insurgency, banditry, and transnational crime, this partnership is about capacity, not dependency.

Trade Dynamism: Türkiye is among the world’s leading exporters to Africa. Its model emphasizes local production, infrastructure delivery, and joint ventures—the kind of growth Nigeria now prioritizes.

Geopolitical Balance: As a NATO member with strong relations across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, Türkiye offers Nigeria strategic flexibility—not alignment by ideology, but cooperation by interest.

A Partnership Already in Motion

The first Turkish Head of State to visit Nigeria was President Abdullah Gül in 2010. This milestone was followed by the official visits of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Nigeria in March 2016 and October 2021, reflecting Türkiye’s sustained diplomatic outreach and commitment to deepening bilateral relations with us.

These engagements were complemented by President Muhammadu Buhari’s official visit to Ankara on 19 October 2017, during the D-8 Summit. Together, these high-level exchanges set the tone for the strategic and forward-looking conversations taking place this weekend as President Tinubu visits.

So, the Nigeria–Türkiye relationship has already since, taken tangible shape—far beyond diplomatic pronouncements—across healthcare, education, manufacturing, agriculture, defence, and trade.

Trade at Scale- Bilateral trade now exceeds USD 1 billion annually, with historical peaks near USD 2.7 billion. Both governments have set a formal target to expand trade to USD 5 billion.

In 2024, alone, Turkish exports to Nigeria: ~$721 million, Nigerian exports to Türkiye: ~$505 million, Nigeria recorded a non-oil trade surplus of ₦6.1 trillion, signaling diversification aligned with Turkish industrial inputs.

According to IMF 2026 projections, Nigeria’s 4.4% growth rate compares favorably with: US (2.4%), Germany (1.1%), UK (1.3%). Nigeria is now in the upper tier of emerging-market growth, achieved through structural correction—not commodity windfalls.

Strategic Turkish Presence in Nigeria is seen in various Turksih led investments within our homeland.

* Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja – world-class healthcare facility.

* Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) – multi-state education network.

* Turkish Eye & Specialist Hospitals – expanding clinical partnership.

* Hayat Kimya – $200m hygiene manufacturing (Ogun State).

* Ülker – $50m food processing.

* Direkçi – $22m agro-livestock investments.

* ASELSAN – defence electronics office in Nigeria.

* Türkiye Exporters Assembly missions – 150+ bilateral business engagements.

* Nigeria–Türkiye Business Council – trade matchmaking and joint investment.

Atatürk’s Legacy, Tinubu’s Reform Path

Modern Türkiye was shaped by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk—a military strategist who rebuilt a nation through institutional discipline, industrial revival, and modernization.

Nigeria, under President Tinubu, is now pursuing a similar arc—reform before relief, structure before sentiment. Exchange-rate realism, fiscal discipline, security sector reform, and trade diversification are not temporary. They are foundational corrections. Türkiye understands this path because it has walked it.

The Bigger Picture

This visit is not about symbolism. It is about strategic alignment. Nigeria is positioning itself as a regional manufacturing and logistics hub, and Türkiye is one of the few partners capable of transferring technology, scaling infrastructure, and co-producing security solutions.

If we are serious about becoming Africa’s gateway to global markets, then partnering with a nation that has spent centuries being the world’s gateway between continents is not coincidence—it is logic. By President Tinubu departing on this State Visit, the Nigerian leader is not just choosing a country to visit. Nigeria is choosing a corridor to traverse.

And that corridor runs through Türkiye.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sent a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressing his concerns over the new legislations that banned a UN agency’s operations, UN spokesperson said.

The Israeli parliament passed two laws on Monday to prohibit the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, UNRWA, from operating in the country, and ban Israeli authorities from any contact with the agency.

Guterres outlined in the letter “the issues of international law that have been raised by this law,” Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN chief, said at a press conference.

“Obviously, if implemented, it is clear that it would have a devastating impact on the humanitarian situation of Palestinians,” Dujarric said.

Guterres stressed that UNRWA is the principal means by which essential assistance is supplied to Palestine refugees in the occupied Palestinian territory.

“There is no alternative to UNRWA.”

He warned that the new laws could have devastating consequences for Palestinian refugees, calling it “unacceptable.”

The laws would be “detrimental for the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for peace and security in the region as a whole,” Guterres said.

He urged Israel to adhere to the UN Charter and international law, including humanitarian law and provisions regarding UN privileges and immunities.

Before the legislations were passed, foreign ministers from France, Germany, Britain, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Australia issued a statement expressing “grave concern,” Reuters reported.

Other countries, including Türkiye, Qatar, Ireland and Norway, voiced their opposition to Israel’s latest decision.

Dujarric said the UN chief is heartened by the statements of support that have come in for UNRWA.

He added that there has been an expression of unity “from a number of countries that often don’t agree on much, in their support.”

The Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, has intercepted a cache of arms and ammunition valued at N270 million at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, MMA, in Lagos.

The Comptroller General of Customs, CGC, Bashir Adeniyi, made this known in a statement by its spokesman, Abdullahi Maiwada, in Lagos on Wednesday.

The consignment, which was intercepted at the cargo section of the MMA, was imported from Turkiye with one suspect in custody.

According to the Customs boss, military hardware and accoutrements are also intercepted by the airport command.

“You may recall that the customs recently impounded 11 rifles and six pistols, among other items.

“Similarly, just two days ago, a press briefing of this kind was held in Port Harcourt, where we showcased the seizure of 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of ammunition.

“On June 19, we deployed our personnel to man all the exit points effectively and mandated all examination officers to conduct 100 per cent examination of all consignments.

“During the examination, an item was discovered and suspected to be part of a rifle from a console consignment with airway bill number 235-58737755, emanating from Turkey,” he said.

He said that the entire consignment was isolated for thorough examination.

“At the end of the examination, it was established that four packages were used to conceal 55 pieces of unassembled Jojef Magnum (Tomahawk) semi-automatic shotgun.

“The unassembled rifles were concealed using shower faucet. The duty paid value of these illicit arms is N270.8 million and a suspect is currently in our custody.

“The suspect is in connection with this illicit arms importation and is assisting with an ongoing investigation to uncover the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” Adeniyi said.

He added that the analysis of this with similar recent seizures indicated that some unscrupulous Nigerians based in Turkey were purchasing, packaging and exporting these illicit arms to Nigeria.

“Intelligence further revealed that they are exploring new frontiers to perpetrate their nefarious activities.

“Still, I can assure Nigerians that all our commands are on red alert to intercept any such illicit arms importation,” he added.

Adeniyi said that other military and para-military hardware and accoutrements worth N1.29 billion were also seized by the command.
