Every Saturday, I reach for the Saturday Tribune to read the latest tales of dirty underwear from Ibadan’s courts of broken marriages. There are always stories—divorce petitions and intimate scandals—from the Chief Customary Court sitting at Ojaaba in Ibadan.

I once asked the editor of the paper whether there were no Catholics in Ibadan and whether that court ever went on holiday. He laughed and told me that even in Rome, the home of Catholic marriage, people file for divorce and wash their dirty, stinking linen in public every week.

He pointed me to the Rome News Tribune, which, on April 4, 2026, published on its website the names of people who “filed for divorce through the Floyd County Superior Court Clerk’s Office for the week of March 23, 2026″. That Roman newspaper went on to name names. I avoid doing that here.

What struck me, however, is that there is no hallowed ground anywhere when it comes to the sanctity of marriage.

People exit marriages for all sorts of reasons and faults. Sometimes, the cause may be as trivial as a spouse not knowing how to neatly press a toothpaste tube; at other times, it may be as grave as outright betrayal.

In some cases, partners simply drift apart without formal divorce proceedings.

But it can be deeply painful—or downright foolish—for a partner not to realise when the market is over. Market. Yes, marriage is a market: it is about buying and selling, offer and acceptance. That is why it is a contract.

In 2013, I wrote a piece titled “Ladies, this is how to know your man is through with you.”

Since that piece was written 13 years ago, much water has passed under the bridge of both great and not-so-great marriages.

Because if lice will not stop living in the hem of a dress, the fingers will not be free of blood. I reproduce that 2013 piece here verbatim:

So, how do you know if you are being dumped or if you are already the ‘dumpee’ even this minute? First, let us agree that not all relationships end in ‘I do’. Many end in ‘I don’t’. If a man no longer wants to ‘do’, you would do well, my sister, to learn to let him go.

When a man begins to make himself unavailable and unapproachable, he is signalling that the deal is off.

When a man is done with a relationship, he is done. He may not look like he is even lacing up his boots, yet he may have left you weeks ago. A woman needs to learn how to read the signs—and what to do. Unlike women, who are often sentimental about ending relationships, men tend to be more logical.

If they want out, they head for the door. Some try to be nice about it—though I doubt there is a nice way to dump a woman—but a man who is through is through. Trying to stop him is, most times, a waste of time and energy. When a man finds himself in a tight corner, the first person he looks out for is himself. He may not intend to hurt, but hurt is what follows. The dumper may even be more hurt than the dumpee—if you get my meaning. Perhaps that is why the stench from dump sites is always so terrible. Dumping is simply bad business.

So, how do you know you are being dumped—or already dumped? Again, let us agree that not all relationships end in ‘I do’. Many end in ‘I don’t’. If a man no longer wants to ‘do’, it is wiser to let him go. Not that you can stop him if he is already eyeing the door, but it is easier on the dumpee if she holds a meeting between her heart and her head—and they agree not to cause a scene.

Here is one sign: he stops asking detailed questions about your movements. If he once checked on you three times between leaving the office and getting home but now only asks, “How was your day?”—and quickly changes the subject when you begin to explain—let the green light in your head turn amber. If you mention a dinner and all he says is “okay” without asking who is hosting, where it is, or what you will wear, you are losing your grip. As far as he is concerned, you can go jump in an acid lake.

He will also stop explaining his own movements. If you see another woman in his car and stop him, a “nice” dumper will greet you, say he is in a hurry, and move on. Note: he does not introduce her, nor explain who you are. Count yourself lucky he even stopped—and keep that amber light on. You are no longer as important as you used to be. Or did you believe the “I’m in a hurry” line?

If you have met members of his family, be alert to a sudden chill. Watch for smiles that do not reach the eyes, pitying looks, and barely concealed relief when you say you are leaving. They may like you—but he has likely introduced someone else and told them he is done with you.

When a man begins to make himself unavailable and unapproachable, he is signalling that the deal is off. If weekends once spent together are now always “busy”, do not ignore the alarm bells. If you visit unannounced, you may well find your replacement.

If the man who once could not keep his hands and eyes off you now sees you in lingerie, adjusts his glasses, and returns to his laptop or iPad, you are likely headed for the dumpsite. If he walks past you in the shower without a second glance, there is cause for serious concern.

If your ten calls a day have dwindled to one—or none—you are a dumpee awaiting formal confirmation.

That man has moved on. I suggest you do the same.

Yes—this is my verdict in my capacity as Chairman, National Assembly Joint Committee on Intimate Affairs.

Let me congratulate you and the Nigerian Tribune family on the 75th anniversary of one of Nigeria’s best and courageous newspapers known to some of us as ‘Apamaku’ and ‘Tetebun’yan’ because of its consistent, courageous and sometimes ‘confrontational,’ journalism.

I celebrate with you for taking this voice of the people this far. As a journalist who schooled in Ibadan, Tribune’s home base, I learnt a lot from this septuagenarian tabloid, particularly reading its editorials, erudite columnists like Abba Saheed, Justice Adewale Thompson, Ebinotopsy, Tai Solarin, political news, etc of those days.

It was a controversial newspaper for us as student journalists in the Mass Comm department of The Polytechnic Ibadan those days particularly because of its political stance on issues and pro-people brand of journalism. My first article in print, a letter to the editor, was published by this newspaper in 1978 and you could imagine my joy seeing my name in a national newspaper of that distinction. It is the same paper that featured my name on the admissions list of the Polytechnic, Ibadan, amongst many others in 1979. Thus, it led me into journalism career, a journey that has brought the best out of me so far.

READ ALSO: Adesina and Dodan Barracks, By ‘Dipo Onabanjo

While I tried unsuccessfully to join the Tribune’s editorial team after graduation in 1983, fate made me practise journalism in rival newspapers in Ibadan, as an intern in defunct Daily Sketch, and editor of the defunct Monitor, Daily. That the Tribune is not defunct is certainly by God’s grace and the ‘apamaku’ culture in its employees and its notable founder, the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who though physically dead but still lives in the hearts of many Nigerians.

May you continue to survive these slippery times that make newspaper publishing only fit for the tough and the daring. Amen

In the course of my journalism odyssey and service to my Fatherland, I have been honoured countless times with awards headlining my modest contribution to country and humanity. But none came close to the one I received on 7 February 2024 at the Standing Committee of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion at Ika in Delta State.

This particular one was an epoch that set me on an emotional introspection followed by profuse praise for God’s matchless grace upon my life. There I stood facing the leadership of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion: the Primate of all Nigeria, Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, House of Bishops, House of Priests and House of Laity, at the Anglican Cathedral Church of Ascension, Boji-Boji Owa of the Diocese of Ika, Delta State, listening to my citation for the prestigious Award For Excellence In Faithfulness In The Kingdom Service.

As the citation was being read, the Holy Spirit took over, taking me on a journey back to my formative years which were spent in vicarage. In vivid colour, the Spirit showed me how my late father, Daniel Akinseye Olamiti -a Cathechist- spent 40 years serving God, faithfully and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to many parts of the Old Ondo Province. My beloved Father was the vessel, the early evangelist that God used to bring Christianity to Idanreland.

Ironically, despite his many years of dedicated and meritorious service, Papa retired without a building to house his wife and six children. But by the time he was asked to pack out of the Mission House, help came from above. It came in the form of a two-bedroom building without toilet and kitchen, but good enough to provide shelter for him, his wife and six children.

For his service for 40 years he was paid one-off retirement benefit of 40 pounds and he used half of that amount to offset the balance of my school fees at Olofin Grammar School, Idanre. I also remember how, as a young boy in the primary School, I used to follow my Dad to the yearly Synod in Ondo town. My Dad, though poor financially, living on one-pound monthly salary, always went with cap in hand to well-to-do Church members for help.

However, throughout that difficult period, I never saw my father in a moody state. He was always happy and enthusiastic in going from house to house twice daily to win converts into God’s Kingdom from paganism. He was cheerfully and eagerly going about planting churches at the different stations he found himself from frequent transfers. Therefore, as joy continued to well in my soul and spirit as I received the award, my spirit kept telling me: this award is not for me but for my father and the people of Idanreland, where my beloved old man was one of the pioneers that brought Christianity to the land.

Shortly after he passed on to glory, 28 years ago, I saw him in my dream. The two of us were in white apparels, walking in a lush green field. As we walked and as I savoured the scenic scene, Papa told me to look sideways. I did. And I saw men in white dresses entering a big church. My father then instructed me to go and join them. He let go my hand and continued walking away. As I was walking towards the big church to join the men in white as Papa instructed, I woke up.

In his days, my father struggled hard to get a collar as a reverend but could not because of his minimal education attainment. He only had a standard six certificate.

For me, praising God and my Saviour Jesus Christ is a contract that has no expiry date. For my remaining years on earth, I will totally commit myself to serving Him with all my heart and soul.

But here was I, standing on the stage, facing the awesome gathering of God’s people, including the most eminent fathers and mothers in the Anglican Church, receiving this prestigious honour. How can I ever forget this day of glory? It’s not possible. I will forever cherish it. This definitely is not by my powers or might but by the Grace of the Almighty God and also to the leadership of our Church Most Revd Ndukuba. I am one of the few Anglicans that belong to three dioceses – Abuja, Ibadan and Akure. I make sure I balance my responsibilities to the best of my ability to serve the Lord and humanity in these dioceses.

Just last year, in January to be precise, the Ibadan Diocese, while celebrating its 70th anniversary, honoured me with an award for Invaluable Services to the Diocese. Yet, this was just one of the many awards that I received from the diocese. They included: Communicator of the Year, 2006; Son of The Year 2009; and 2012 Award for Invaluable Contribution to the Growth and Development of Ibadan Diocese. From Akure Diocese, I was honoured during its 10th Inauguration Anniversary in 2023 with the Eminent Ambassador Award. This is not forgetting the Abuja Diocese where I was privileged to be a member of the Committee for the Establishment of the Anglican International Academy, and from there also came an award in recognition of invaluable service to work of God. From Oyo Diocese in 2019 The Women organizations honoured me with an award in recognition of my contributions to the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, the media and society at large. As the immediate past chairman of the Board of Management of Advent Cable Network Nigeria Television, ACNNTV, for two terms. I got a Nehemiah award during the station’s 10th Year Anniversary n recognition of my pioneering role in setting up the station. In 2017, I was also inducted into Anglican Knighthood of Saint Christopher at Bayelsa State.

Now, let me quickly say this: I have gone all out to mention all these honours among the many honours and services the Church has bestowed on me not for self-adulation but to appreciate God for His kindness and faithfulness in my 72 years so far on this side of eternity.

Yet, this is not to talk about secular awards which God has bestowed on me and they came in droves. Needless to mention that I am a titled Chief in Idanre, my hometown – where the Owa of Idanreland Oba Frederick Aroloye Arubiefin IV installed me the Ajagunla of Idanreland. I am also a trustee of The Yoruba Leadership Peace Initiatives TYLPI. I served for ten years as the Resident Consultant and spokesperson of Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offenses Commission ( ICPC) and received an award for Outstanding Leadership and Service in The Fight Against Corruption. From my professional body as a journalist. I was honoured with an indelible and committed Senior Management Staff award of The African Newspapers of Nigeria ( ANN) Publisher of Tribune titles where I served for 32 years. Other awards included Fellow Nigerian Guild of Editors (FNGE), Fellow of Diamond Merit Award (DAME), the Milestone Award from Nigerian Union of Journalists, and Member of International Press Institute IPI in Vienna and a member IPI Board of Trustees. Nigeria chapter. No doubt, all these secular honours are good for the recognition of one’s services to humanity. And I remain forever grateful for these recognitions.

But the ones from the Church give me enormous spiritual fulfillment; and for this reason I’m celebrating the latest that came from the Apex Body of the Church-The Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion. Colossians 3: 17, says: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it well in the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

For me, praising God and my Saviour Jesus Christ is a contract that has no expiry date. For my remaining years on earth, I will totally commit myself to serving Him with all my heart and soul. To Him belong all the glory. Thank you, Jesus.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has felicitated with the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) Plc, Publishers of the Tribune titles, on the 70th anniversary of the newspapers.

Lawan lauded the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, for his foresight in floating what is today Nigeria’s oldest private media outfit with the initial primary objective to project nationalist ideals at a time Nigerians battled to break the yoke of colonialism.

The Senate President also congratulated the Awolowo family, board and management of the company for sustaining the legacy of the late sage and for nurturing the newspapers to an enviable height.

“The Tribune has been consistent in its fearless, critical but constructive editorial services and well balanced reportage of issues and events right from its inception.

“The Tribune newspapers’ front line role in the fight for Nigeria’s Independence and subsequently in the pro-democracy struggle to keep the military in the barracks are notable memories of the past,” Lawan said.

The Senate President enjoined the newspapers to keep the flag flying and wished all their staff, friends and well-wishers a happy celebration.
