Mrs Nkiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, said this at a roadshow sensitisation rally in Kugbo, furniture market, on Thursday in Abuja.

Represented by Alhaji Mohammed Tolani, Director Skill Development and Certification, the minister said government had begun the enforcement of 12 years minimum age for individuals to engage in apprenticeship scheme in Nigeria.

“This breaches the United Nations and International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention and standards.

“The policy has been clearly spelt out under Labour law cap 198 section 49-53 LFN,” she said.

Onyejeocha said the ministry had commenced enforcement of the law and sensitisation of the people to the knowledge of the crime in the six geo-political zones of the country.

She said the ministry had started issuing Trade Test Certificate of Competence to deserving beneficiaries in order to boost employment generation.

According to her, to qualify for the training scheme, an apprentice must be accredited by the Department of Skills Development and Certification in the ministry.

The new commissioners of police, according to the spokesman of the commission, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement he issued on Monday are Alausa Hakeem Tolani for Bayelsa State and Yusuf Mohammed Lawal for Borno State.

The commission approved the appointments at the continuation of its 21st plenary meeting currently going on at its Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.

Chairman of the commission, Dr. Solomon Arase, (retired Inspector General of Police) charged the new commissioners to ensure that the vision of the president, Bola Tinubu, for an improved national security was accorded the required attention.

Arase said the war against terror and terrorism in Nigeria must be won.

He called on state command commissioners to restrategise and take over the public space currently being distorted by non-state actors.

He noted that the commission would continue to create the enabling environment for the officers to give their best, adding that the security of Nigeria and Nigerians must remain a priority for national growth.
