The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement, saying an investigation had begun into the incident.

Adebisi said preliminary information indicated that the violence began when suspected area boys allegedly stopped a tricycle rider and demanded N200.

She said the rider refused to pay, prompting the group to allegedly seize his tricycle.

According to her, the rider later returned with some persons, resulting in a violent confrontation between the two groups.

“Three persons were killed, while two others sustained injuries during the clash,” she said.

Adebisi added that some buildings were also set ablaze during the ensuing violence.

She said the deceased and injured persons were taken to the Military Hospital, Yaba, for medical attention and other necessary procedures.

The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, visited the scene alongside Commander, 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Afolabi Owolabi.

The officials assessed the situation and coordinated the security response to restore normalcy in the area.

Operatives from the Rapid Response Squad, Taskforce, Tactical Squad and Police Mobile Force were deployed.

Other deployed formations included the Eko Strike Force and Violent Crime Response Unit, she said.

The police spokesperson said the security personnel were maintaining law and order, adding that the situation was firmly under control.

“The command has begun an investigation into the incident and will ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law,” she said.

Adebisi urged residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of escalating tensions.

She also encouraged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist the ongoing investigation.

Adebisi said that the suspects, who are between the ages of 26 and 32 years, were apprehended during sustained follow-up operations in connection with a robbery case.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are linked to recent robbery activities around Ajah, Sangotedo and Ibeju-Lekki.

“They also made confessional statements regarding their alleged involvement in armed robbery, murder and cultism,” she said.

The image maker said operatives recovered three locally-made pistols, one live ammunition, two battle axes and a Point-of-Sale machine from the suspects.

The spokesperson said the suspects remained in police custody and are assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang and recover additional exhibits.

According to her, the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The spokesperson said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Fatai Tijani, commended the operatives for their diligence and sustained follow-up efforts.

“CP Tijani, while commending officers, directed the operatives to intensify efforts to apprehend other members of the gang.

“He warned cultists, armed robbers and other violent criminals that the command will continue to deploy intelligence-led operations to track them down and bring them to justice,” Adebisi said.

She encouraged residents to report suspicious activities through the command’s emergency lines for prompt police response.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday, saying the operation followed credible intelligence received by police operatives.

Adebisi said the raid began at about 5:45 a.m. on Sunday, involving a joint team of officers drawn from different formations across the command.

She explained that operatives stormed criminal hideouts at Boolar, Okofilling Bus Stop, Igando and other identified black spots within the Area M, Idimu axis.

According to her, the operation was designed to flush out hoodlums and other criminal elements allegedly terrorising communities and threatening residents’ safety across the area.

She said officers arrested 150 suspects during the operation and recovered numerous exhibits believed to be connected with criminal activities across the affected locations.

“Exhibits recovered included 100 unregistered motorcycles, 54 mobile phones, one double-barrel gun, two single-barrel guns, one locally made double-barrel short gun and two military camouflage uniforms,” she said.

She added that officers also recovered assorted charms, six generators suspected to have been stolen, substances suspected to be Indian hemp and various quantities of illicit drugs.

“The suspects are currently in police custody, while investigations are ongoing to determine their individual culpability. Those found to have committed criminal offences will be charged to court accordingly,” Adebisi said.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, commended the operatives for their professionalism, courage and dedication throughout the intelligence-led operation.

Tijani reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining Operation Ko s’aye across Lagos to deny criminals safe haven and strengthen security for all residents.

He urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to assist police in identifying criminal hideouts, apprehending offenders and improving public safety across the state.

Adebisi said the suspect was apprehended after police operatives intercepted a motorcycle carrying three passengers during a routine operation.

She said a search conducted on the passengers led to the recovery of the firearm and live cartridge from the suspect.

According to her, the suspect confessed during preliminary interrogation to being a member of the prohibited Eiye Confraternity.

She said the suspect told investigators that he and other members of the cult, who escaped arrest, were on their way to attack some individuals before they were intercepted by the police.

“The suspect is currently in police custody, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing members of the criminal group and recover additional weapons that may be in their possession,” she said.

Adebisi said that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive operations to combat cultism and other violent crimes across the state.

The spokesperson urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to assist the police in preventing crime and ensuring the safety and security of lives and property.

The commissioners of Police in Ogun and Lagos states, Mr Bode Ojajuni and Mr Fatai Tijani, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Saturday at the Police Training School, Iperu.

Ojajuni said the five victims were rescued unhurt from a forest near Ogbere, along the J4 corridor of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway.

He explained that four suspected kidnappers were neutralised, while another four were arrested following a gun duel with security operatives.

The commissioner said the success of the operation was achieved through the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Olatunji Disu, and the commitment of officers involved.

He added that the Nigeria Police Force had inaugurated Operation “Kosaye” in Lagos and Ogun to tackle criminal activities and reassure residents of adequate security.

According to him, the operation was formally launched on the directive of the I-G with the support of the governors of both states.

“Operation “Kosaye” means there is no space for criminals and criminality within Lagos and Ogun states.

“The initiative aims to eliminate banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the two neighbouring states.

“It also targets criminal hideouts in forests and other ungoverned spaces used by suspected criminals,” he said.

Ojajuni said extensive operations had been conducted across several communities in both states, including Ogere, Ijebu-Ode, Ajebandele and the J4 corridor in Ogun.

He disclosed that 84 additional suspects were apprehended across Lagos and Ogun during the operation.

According to him, the police recovered AK-47 rifles, other assault weapons, locally made pistols, battle axes, ammunition, mobile phones and other exhibits linked to criminal activities.

The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the police to ensuring the safety of lives and property in both states.

He reiterated that the operation would continue and could eventually be extended to other parts of the country.

In his remarks, Tijani dismissed widespread rumours that bandits had infiltrated and taken over parts of Lagos and Ogun, saying ongoing security operations had proved such claims to be false.

He said the joint operation, initiated by the I-G, involved coordinated security sweeps across border communities, forests and other identified criminal hideouts stretching from Lagos State into Ogun.

According to him, the exercise has already yielded significant results, including the arrest of suspects, rescue of victims and recovery of weapons and other exhibits.

“Our personnel thoroughly combed forests and other identified locations, and the operation is not a one-off exercise. It will continue for as long as necessary to keep our communities safe,” he said.

Tijani said the I-G had directed commissioners of police in neighbouring states to collaborate closely in securing border corridors and dismantling criminal networks operating across state boundaries.

He commended the governors of Lagos and Ogun for providing the logistics and support that made the operation possible.

“The results speak for themselves. You have seen the rescued victims, the suspects arrested and the recoveries made. This is evidence that we are serious about securing our people,” he said.

He urged residents to remain calm and continue supporting the police with credible information, assuring them that the force remained committed to safeguarding lives and property.

Speaking with journalists after his rescue, one of the victims, Mr Jimoh Badamosi, 58, recounted his ordeal in the hands of the kidnappers and praised the police for securing their freedom.

Badamosi said he was travelling to Ibadan when armed men attacked motorists around the Ogbere Forest, shooting sporadically before forcing occupants out of their vehicles.

According to him, the gunmen collected their mobile phones, wallets and other valuables before marching five victims from three different vehicles into the forest.

He said the kidnappers later demanded ransom, asking his family to pay N40 million, while his colleague was asked to produce N30 million.

The victim said they had spent less than 24 hours in captivity when they suddenly heard gunshots, forcing the kidnappers to flee.

“We later heard the kidnappers saying the Nigeria Police had come. They ordered us to lie down, but when we heard police officers calling out, we crawled toward them and were rescued,” he said.

Badamosi commended the police and urged them not to relent in the fight against kidnapping.

He also appealed to the federal government to equip the police with more sophisticated weapons, establish additional security checkpoints and ensure forests are properly secured.

Other rescued victims also narrated their experiences and appreciated the police for the swift response that led to their rescue alive.

He told journalists at a news conference held at the command headquarters, Ikeja, on the outcome of the comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Tijani said that the investigation indicated that the explosion, which occurred at 19 Wey Street, Mushin, was caused by a mechanical failure rather than an IED as initially suspected.

He said preliminary observations at the scene had raised concerns about a possible IED explosion.

That, according to him, had prompted the police to activate standard security protocols and deploy experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit.

Tijani said the specialists carried out extensive forensic and technical examinations, including analysis of the damaged vehicle, recovered fragments, damage patterns and other physical evidence, as well as interviews with relevant witnesses.

He said the investigation conclusively established that the incident was not caused by an IED, terrorist activity, sabotage or any criminal use of explosives.

“Our technical findings revealed no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues or blast characteristics ordinarily associated with explosive attacks,” he said.

The police commissioner added that the affected vehicle did not exhibit the structural deformation, fragmentation patterns or other indicators commonly associated with explosive incidents.

Tijani explained that the explosion resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component located outside the vehicle, which triggered a sudden release of energy.

He said the impact shattered the front passenger-side glass panels of the vehicle and caused minor injuries to an occupant.

“Based on our findings, the incident has been professionally classified as a mechanical explosion and the case has been officially reclassified from a suspected IED incident,” he said.

The commissioner reassured residents that there was no evidence linking the incident to terrorism, insurgency, sabotage or any threat to public safety.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities, while assuring them that all reported explosions and related incidents would continue to receive thorough professional scrutiny.

Tijani commended residents who promptly alerted emergency responders and security agencies, saying their swift action contributed to the timely management and investigation of the incident.

Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.

The rescue operation was carried out on June 17 after officers intervened to prevent a breakdown of law and order involving the foreign nationals.

He said: “The foreign nationals comprise citizens of Chad, Burkina Faso, Benin, Mali, Togo, Cameroon, and Ghana.

“The individuals were unable to provide satisfactory explanations regarding their presence or activities in Nigeria.

“Suspects are currently being profiled at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and will be handed to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further action.

“We want to properly profile them and determine whether there is any criminal element to their activities before transferring them to immigration authorities for further processing.”

Of those rescued, 20 allegedly entered Nigeria illegally, while 18 were found in possession of valid ECOWAS travel documents.

Tijani said the intervention was necessary to prevent mob action and ensure the safety of all persons involved.

He said matter had been escalated to relevant agencies, including the Nigeria Immigration Service and embassies of affected countries, for proper profiling and action.

According to him, investigations are ongoing to determine circumstances surrounding their presence in the area and whether any immigration-related offences have been committed.

The police boss assured residents that the command remained committed to maintaining public order.

He said due process would be followed in handling cases involving foreign nationals and further updates would be provided as investigations progressed.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.

He said the operation followed actionable intelligence that led operatives to intercept an unregistered MAN diesel truck along a route in Lagos.

“The vehicle was found loaded with 47 sacks containing military camouflage uniforms and 80 cartons of substances suspected to be illicit drugs.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck was being used to transport the military camouflage uniforms to the eastern part of the country,” he said.

​The commissioner stated that the arrest of the suspects, aged 29, 38, and 40, marked a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb the illegal movement of restricted materials and contraband.

​According to him, investigations are ongoing to determine the source, ownership, and intended recipients of the recovered items.

​He added that efforts were underway to establish the extent of the suspects’ involvement and to identify other members of the criminal network.

​The commissioner assured that the command would continue to intensify intelligence-led policing to clamp down on criminal activities across the state.

​He added that the suspects would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.

Those apprehended comprised 19 Chadians and seven Cameroonians.

A 22-year-old Cameroonian woman had reported to the police that she was kidnapped after travelling to Nigeria to meet a 39-year-old Chadian man she had been dating online.

However, investigations revealed that the report was false and was allegedly made after the woman discovered that the man was married.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, subsequently directed that the case be transferred from Area N Command, Ijede, Ikorodu, to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Yaba, for further investigation.

A police source told said on Friday that the report, made on June 16, prompted an immediate rescue operation.

According to the source, communication challenges initially complicated the case because the woman could not speak English fluently, leading officers to treat the complaint as a genuine kidnapping incident.

“The woman travelled from Cameroon to meet her lover whom she had been communicating with online but became disappointed after discovering that he was married.

“She subsequently sought a way to return home without informing him and reported that she had been kidnapped,” the source said.

The source said police operatives traced the location where the woman claimed she was being held and discovered several other foreign nationals residing in an apartment.

He said the operation led to the apprehension of the 26 foreigners, aged between 19 and 50 years, including four women.

According to him, the individuals claimed to be involved in a networking business linked to a company identified as Ignite.

“The foreigners could not provide valid travel documents, while some are suspected to have entered the country through irregular routes.

“They are currently undergoing profiling and immigration-related checks to determine their legal status and whether any laws have been violated,” the source said.

He added that the investigation was being handled by the Diplomatic and Foreigners Desk of the SCID under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the department, Mr Dayo Akinbisehin.

The source said investigations were ongoing and that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome.

The suspects allegedly lured fellow Cameroonians to Nigeria with promises of securing visas, work permits and residency documents for destinations such as Mauritius, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Victims were made to pay huge sums of money for the purported travel arrangements, which never materialised.

It was gathered that several of the suspects lacked valid passports and visas, raising questions about how they entered Nigeria.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, directed that the case be transferred from the Egbada Tactical Unit to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Yaba, for further investigation.

The investigation into the allegations of conspiracy, fraud and human trafficking is being handled by the Human Rights Unit of the SCID under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the department, Mr Dayo Akinbisehin.

A police source said on Wednesday that the syndicate, comprising five males and five females, operated under the guise of a networking business, but investigations suggest that their real “product” was recruiting and exploiting people.

“The suspects allegedly used social media to deceive prospective victims by staging photographs and videos in luxurious environments, including airports, to create the false impression that members had successfully relocated abroad.

“Vctims were coached on what to tell their families and friends in order to recruit more people into the scheme,” the source said.

One of the victims said she was lured by a friend who claimed to be living and working in Mauritius and paid 800,000 CFA francs (about N2 million) for travel documents and relocation.

She alleged that upon arriving in Lagos, she discovered that instead of processing her travel documents, she had been recruited into a networking scheme at a resident in Epe area of the state.

The victim further alleged that members’ phones and documents were confiscated, while they were taken to airports and tourist sites to take photographs and videos that falsely portrayed them as living abroad.

She said members were monitored while communicating with their families and coached on what to say to convince others to join the scheme.

According to her, she was denied a refund when she requested to return home and was asked to recruit another person before she could recover her money.

She added that her cousin was later convinced to pay another 800,000 CFA francs after being led to believe she had successfully relocated overseas.

Similarly, another victim said she paid about 1.5 million CFA francs, equivalent to about N3.5 million, for travel documents.

Upon arriving in Lagos, she discovered that instead of processing her travel documents, the suspects introduced her to the networking business and trained participants on strategies for recruiting more people.

The police source said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
