The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, on Tuesday visited the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe and the Commissioner for Insurance of the National Insurance Commission, NAICOM, Mr. Sunday Olorundare Thomas at their respective offices in Abuja.

The visit by the new NCDMB boss was aimed at familiarising himself with chief executives of institutions that are represented on the NCDMB’s Governing Council as well as exploring areas of collaboration.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary conveyed the willingness of the NCDMB to deepen its partnership with key agencies of the Federal Government to achieve the economic aspirations of President Bola Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that cooperation and teamwork were key to accomplishing any noble objective.

He promised that NCDMB would work closely with NAICOM to review and operationalise the insurance services regulations jointly issued by both agencies in June 2022, to get Nigerian oil and gas companies to patronise local insurance firms and retain spend in the economy.

The Commissioner for Insurance of the National Insurance Commission, NAICOM, Mr. Sunday Olorundare Thomas, congratulated the Executive Secretary on his appointment, noting that he would be building on the solid foundation laid by his predecessors.

He described NCDMB as a formidable institution and commended the founding fathers of the Board for their foresight in creating such an important agency.

He also lauded the former Executive Secretaries of the NCDMB for their innovative projects and achievements while in office that added value to the economy.

The Commissioner for Insurance described insurance as the oxygen of business operations.

He expressed concern that the insurance services regulations that were signed by the commission and NCDMB were yet to be implemented.

He requested the Executive Secretary to address the challenges, hinting that implementing the regulations would bring the needed changes in the insurance subsector of the oil and gas industry before being extended to other key sectors of the economy.

At the NUPRC, the Executive Secretary reiterated the need for teamwork and partnership amongst various agencies under the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, to sustain the growth of the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

He hinted that collaboration would create an enabling environment that would attract investments and new projects into the sector, helping to create employment opportunities for youths and address insecurity in the polity.

While noting that local content development would be stunted if projects and investments in the oil and gas sector did not flourish, the Executive Secretary suggested that NCDMB and NUPRC should organise workshops to examine and resolve concerns identified by investors as obstacles to investments and new projects.

He hinted that investment decisions by international oil and gas companies were often affected by their assessment of their Return on Investments, ROI.

In his comments, the commission’s Chief Executive of NUPRC, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, congratulated the Executive Secretary on his appointment, noting that the industry was pleased to have a person of his pedigree as the new helmsman of the NCDMB.

The NUPRC’s boss highlighted the important role of the NCDMB in the operations of the upstream sector of the petroleum industry and commended the new Executive Secretary for seeking closer cooperation among the agencies.

He described the move as expedient, especially at a time when every hand was on the deck towards increasing Nigeria’s crude oil production, earning higher revenue for the nation, and reviving the economy.

READ ALSO: EFCC grills Betta Edu over alleged N585m fraud

He remarked that the Nigerian upstream sector was facing severe pressures because of the low crude oil production and lack of investment in recent years.

He pointed out that the energy map of the world had changed considerably with the emergence of several new oil-producing countries.

That situation, he said, had induced a high level of competitiveness for investment capital, stressing that strategic actions must be taken to make the Nigerian environment investor-friendly.

According to him, “we must vacate entry barriers for investment. This is common logic when there is high competition. We need to work together to lower barriers and do everything possible to motivate investment.”

He assured that the NUPRC would partner closely with the NCDMB to achieve some of the programmes it had planned for 2024.

The Race Director of Abuja International Marathon, Olukayode Thomas, has said that Nigerian long distance runners will compete favourably with their counterparts in the world in the near future.

Thomas, who gave a post-race review of the maiden marathon event held in Abuja city on Saturday, said the the resurgence of long distance racers in Nigeria in the past few years indicated that the country would get reckoned with in the sport soon.

“Over the past few years, we have witnessed young athletes in the country turning out in large numbers for marathon events and I think this gives some hope for the future. All we need do now is to encourage the young talents by drawing up concise programmes for their development,” he also said.

Kenya’s Emmanuel Naibet and Bahrain’s Ruth Jebet made history as the first male and female winners respectively of the maiden Abuja marathon.

Naibet, who returned with the time of 2:13: 45, had won the 2021 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

Thomas however said the top prizes being swept by foreigners would inspire Nigerian athletes to excellence.

“We expect a different scenario at the 2024 edition of the Abuja marathon and I am positive of our athletes making a great mark,” he also said.

Over 20,000 persons registered for the Abuja event where runners participated in the 18km, 10km, 5km and Fun Race.

The Executive Director, National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, Alhaji Adedayo Thomas, on Thursday said about one billion copies of uncensored, unclassified and pornographic films were seized in 2021.

Thomas made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lagos.

Thomas said the pornographic videos, in form of compact discs, were seized in tranches across different states of the federation and were burnt immediately.

According to him, the NFVCB achieved that with the collaborations of security officers.

Thomas said that the censors board was not resting on its oars in ensuring that children and youths were not exposed to obscene videos and videos with vulgar languages.

He said the NFVCB had consistently engaged in increasing the capacity of its staff to discharge their duties responsibly and timely.

“In 2021, we were able to seize over one billion pieces of pornographic videos; we will be seizing more this year.

“Most of the people who traded in these were retailers.

“We are working on curbing circulation of these uncensored and unclassified works going through the streaming companies,” he said.

Thomas said some of the members of staff and security officials were usually on ground to track the activities of illegal operators in the industry.

According to him, NFVCB is also engaging in media literacy campaign to secondary schools and universities, to sensitise them against unlicensed and uncensored films.

He said the campaign would enlighten the younger generation on the negative effects of producing films which were against nation’s culture, which would guide against future reoccurrence.

Thomas noted that in trying to curb the circulation of obscene videos, NFVCB had tried to professionalise the film industry such that only films produced by legally registered film producers were censored.

He said with that arrangement, it believed that registered film producers would be conversant with the dictates of the Censors Board and would not produce films with contents that were not certified.

“We tried to professionalise the film industry going through the dictate of the act that established NFVCB.

“The act states that anybody who is not a member of a professional association or guild cannot present films to be censored, so in that light, the professional associations must inform the Censors Board.

“With this development which commenced last year, we have recorded 18 associations and guilds who have registered with us.

“The multiplier effect of this is to identify those who actually belong to this industry who will in turn help us in ensuring that unclassified, uncensored and pornographic works are not circulated.

“We cannot sleep and leave the future of our children with hoodlums,” he said.

Thomas noted that most of the activities of the NFVCB had been channeled toward ensuring that President Muhammadu Buhari’s ease of doing policy was actualised.

He said the nation needed a healthy environment for businesses to thrive, which called for the NFVCB’s action of working with only registered film makers to encourage professionalism.

According to him, Nigeria is not a dumping ground for all.

“We are constantly working to make the society a better place,” he said.
