Mr Felix Theman, the Commander, of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, FCT Sector Command, confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the command Public Education Officer, Mrs Helen Nnaji.

Theman said that the crash occurred at about 11:45 a.m. at Gada Biyu, with the first distress call received at 11:47 a.m.

He said that a patrol team from Zebra 6 Unit, Yangoji, arrived at the scene within seven minutes at about 11:54 a.m.

According to him, four vehicles were involved in the crash.

“Two Volkswagen Golf cars with registration numbers GWA 162 KZ and ABJ 111 NW, a Ford Sharon bus with registration number AFN 325 YL, and a Volvo Randon trailer with registration number ANC 665 XA,” he said.

Theman said that preliminary investigations indicated that speed limit violation and loss of control led to a chain collision involving the vehicles.

He said that eyewitness accounts revealed that the trailer, belonging to African Natural Resources and Mines Ltd and coming from Gujeni in Kagarko local government area of Kaduna State with a consignment of coal, lost control.

“It however, rammed into an illegal roadside motor park, triggering the multiple crash.

“A total of 18 persons were involved in the incident, comprising eight adult males, four adult females, two male children and four female children.

“The casualty figure stood at 12 fatalities, including four adult males, two adult females, two male children and four female children.

“Three persons which are two adult males and one adult female sustained injuries, while three others escaped unhurt,” he said.

Theman said that the FRSC personnel administered first aid at the scene, recovered items found in the vehicles and secured them in safe custody.

He added that the injured victims were evacuated to Abaji General Hospital for urgent medical attention, while the deceased were released to their families for burial in line with religious and cultural practices.

He said that the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) of the Nigerian Police, Kwali Division, had taken over the investigation to determine additional factors responsible for the crash.

Theman, however, expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

He warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against the practice of creating illegal roadside loading and off-loading points along highways.

He also described it as a major risk that exposed passengers, hawkers and pedestrians to avoidable danger.

The commander urged road users to desist from speeding, dangerous driving, reckless overtaking, loss of control and roadside loading.

That, he said, were especially in populated areas, and called for strict compliance with all traffic safety regulations to prevent further loss of lives.

The state Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Felix Theman,  confirmed the accident in Gombe on Friday.

Theman said that the lone accident,  which involved a trailer conveying 27 cows, also caused injuries on 16 other persons.

He said that the trailer driver lost control of the vehicle and plunged into a ditch.

“The crash that happened this morning was a lone crash involving a trailer carrying 27 cows; the crash occurred on  Abacha Road, Jekadefari,” he said.

The sector commander said that the dead bodies had been taken to a mortuary in Gombe while the injured were taken to a hospital for medical attention.

Theman said that the trailer driver used a road not meant for trailers, as the state government had banned  heavy duty vehicles from plying the road.

He urged drivers of articulated vehicles to be careful always.

He also advised the state residents to prevent their children from playing on tarred roads to reduce accidents.

Theman said that investigation was ongoing to find out if the person driving the trailer was the actual driver of the vehicle.

Mr Felix Theman, the Gombe Sector Commander, FRSC, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lafiyawo, Akko local government area of the state.

He said 518 people were involved in the crashes, out of which 354 sustained various degrees of injuries while 140 were unhurt.

Theman said the accidents were largely due to wrongful overtaking, failure to obey speed limit, overloading, use of phone while driving and under-age driving.

According to him, motorcycles and tricycles were major contributors to the crashes within the period under review, with 128 of them involved in the accidents recorded.

Theman explained that a major area of concern, following analysis of the crashes within the period, was the increasing number of underage drivers in the state.

“The corps has stepped up enforcement in that regard to ensure that children don’t engage in any form of driving on roads which could lead to crashes and fatality in some cases,” he added.

According to him, 33 offenders were booked for use of phones while driving and 18 underage drivers cautioned within the period under review.

The sector commander appealed to motorists to be mindful of their speed and ensure strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations.

“Motorists have a responsibility to ensure safety on the road, so drive for you to be alive,” he advised.

Theman emphasised that the enforcement of traffic rules by FRSC personnel was in the interest of public safety.

Theman said the suspected causes of the accidents which involved one truck, one vehicle and one motorcycle were overloading, speeding and faulty vehicle.

According to him, those that sustained various degrees of injury had been taken to health centres for medical care, while the corpses had been taken to the mortuary.

Theman stated that the areas where the crashes took place were built up areas that were heavily populated, hence any crash had risks of causalities.

The commander said that in one of the crashes, a motorcyclist was carrying three passengers, “this is unacceptable and that’s why we have been sensitising them but some will just not listen.”

Theman said additional patrol vehicles and personnel would be deployed to those areas which had been recording series of crashes.

He cautioned motorists against speeding, overloading and using faulty cars, adding, “we must avoid whatever will lead to crashes and be careful especially now that the Ember months are here.”

Theman also cautioned residents of the by-pass and Pantami community to avoid trading close to the roads while those crossing roads were advised to always be watchful.
