Oyo State government has started the distribution of appointment letters to the 5,000 newly-recruited teachers by the state’s Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM.

Pastor Akinade Alamu, the chairman of Oyo State Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Tuesday.

He said that the distribution of 4,400 employment letters to successful applicants had started on Monday.

According to him, the government approved 5000 appointment letters for distribution, but 4400 letters had been released by TESCOM while the remaining were withheld due to certain errors discovered on the part of the applicants .

He disclosed that the errors included misspelt names as well as invalid emails among others, assuring those yet to receive their letters that they would receive it immediately the corrections were effected.

Alamu said that the collection of the employment letters was decentralised to avoid overcrowding at the state secretariat and to prevent violation of the COVID- 19 safety protocols.

He directed the successful applicants to resume at their duty posts immediately in view of the fact that the academic session had started.

“While congratulating the successful applicants, we want to appeal to those that were also successful but yet to get their letters to exercise patience.

“We discovered that 600 letters had errors that needed to be rectified, that will be sorted and corrected as we speak and will be distributed as well,” Alamu said.

Also, Mrs Olabisi Oderinde, the Permanent Secretary, TESCOM, congratulated the successful candidates and commended them for their patience in spite of the several breaks in the process of the appointment due to COVID-19.

She charged the new teachers to prepare to work diligently to enable the governor’s vision for education to become a reality.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has given a directive to the Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, to recruit 7,000 teachers; 2,000 non-teaching staff and 1,600 night guards.

The recruitment will be coming six years after the government of the state last recruited secondary school teachers.

The chairman of TESCOM, Pastor Akinade Alamu, who confirmed the development during a press conference on Tuesday, stated that Governor Makinde equally directed that applicants should be given the forms free of charge.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted the TESCOM boss as saying that the application form would be in circulation for two weeks after which the applicants would write an aptitude test.

He commended the governor’s directive to give forms to applicants for free, adding that all those applying to become teachers could access the forms at any of the six TESCOM zonal offices in the state and its headquarters at the secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

The zonal offices include Ibadan Zone 1, Ibadan Zone 2, Saki, Ogbomoso, Oyo and Eruwa.

Alamu said that applicants would only need to present their local government identification before they could get a form, hinting, however, that that was not by any means discriminatory or shutting the door against applicants who were not indigenes of Oyo State.

Said he: “We received approval from His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde, to recruit 7,000 teachers, 2,000 non-teaching staff and 1,600 night guards for all the schools in Oyo State and, immediately, we started the exercise. And we have gone to the press to place the advertisement.

“When the governor became aware that we were to collect N1,000 from each applicant, he gave a directive that the forms should be given freely to all applicants in the state. And, in his usual compassionate attitude, he said he would not want people coming from Saki, Kisi, Ogbomoso, Oyo and other distant areas to come down and pay 1,000 to the bank, wait for confirmation from the Accountant-General, before they finally come to obtain the form from us.

“He said he would not want people to undergo these rigours and that the forms should be given to all applicants free of charge. So, we have started that this morning.

“Also, the governor directed that the forms should be made available at all the zones in Oyo State. There are six zones and the head office is the seventh centre where the forms will be given to the applicants.

“The addresses of our offices are as follows: Ibadan Zone 1, Leaf Road, opposite NTC; Ibadan zone 2, Bishop Philips Academy, Iwo Road. People can go there to obtain the form. Oyo zone is located opposite Ajayi Crowther University’s main gate, Oyo. In Ogbomoso, they can obtain forms at the TESCOM zonal office, Atenda, Ogbomoso. At Saki, we have our office at the Old Teachers College. In Eruwa, they can get it at our zonal office located at the local government headquarters. People can also come to the headquarters here at Secretariat to obtain the forms. Nobody should collect any money from any applicant.

“However, what we want, which we think will serve as control is, people will have to come with their local government identification to obtain the forms. They will fill and submit the form to us, and after the closing of the exercise – that is in two weeks – we will announce the date for the examination. This is because we expect that there will be so many applicants and we know we won’t be able to conduct a face-to-face interview for all of them at once. So, there will be a computer-based test to prune down their number. All those that are qualified will later be invited for an interview after the examination.”

Responding to questions from newsmen, Pastor Alamu maintained that the government had put in a place the arrangement for applicants to present their local government identification even if they were not from Oyo State, noting that that would serve as a control for the system.

“As for whether people can obtain the form by proxy, let me say this, we have a system which we have put in place whereby you come with your local government identification card. This will serve as a control. And before you get the form, they will look at your local government identification. The name will be out on our register and we will give you a form on which the number of the form given to you will be recorded in our register.”

He added that the recruitment exercise was only being done through collection of forms in the seven locations, warning prospective applicants to be wary of arrangements that might lure them to paying fees for online recruitment.

He said: “Actually, doing it online is an option but we have started this and the governor has graciously, in his compassionate manner, said we should send these forms to the zones where people can obtain them without going to distant places. So, this is the arrangement we have put in place.

“As to whether you can bring your local government identification card even if you are not an indigene of Oyo State, we won’t say no. Bring it but it is the result of the weeding test that will tell us those who are qualified to take up this appointment or not. So, we are not discriminating at all but using a method to control, so that it won’t be open to people who are not even qualified.

“The forms are available from today to 24th of February. Some people, in anxiety, have gone to the banks to pay without getting clarification from us and I don’t think we will accept responsibility for such loss,” Alamu concluded.

Oyo State government has declared that it will promote and honour public school teachers according to their diligence and efficiency as reflected in the overall performance of their students in external examinations.

The declaration was on Wednesday made by the Chairman, Oyo State Post-primary Schools Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, Pastor Akinade Alamu, at an interactive session he had with School Managers, Saki zone, Oke Ogun.

The session was held at Ansaru Deen High School, Saki, as he hinted that a committee had been set up by Governor Seyi Makinde to have data and measurement of individual teacher across the state after which he would personally award the most efficient among them.

He said promotion of teachers would no more be ‘business as usual’ as the state administration had concluded plans to award excellency, based on measures of efficient and productive input by teachers to make their students excel in external examinations.

He added that workers’ remuneration that had always been a major cause of worry before the Seyi Makinde administration came to office had been overcome.

”You can see that our government is a listening one, we are here today to have some feedback, tell us which area we need to improve as government and I can assure you that the era of unpaid salary has gone forever as this administration will continue to make prompt payment of salary its priority.

“In the last promotion that we did where over eight hundred (800) teachers got promoted, there were no report on the beneficiaries, everybody was just moved together at the same time, Though we believe our teachers are noble, good and hard-working, we may have some bad eggs, who are lazy and might have scaled through without being qualified, and the hard-working ones will be feeling cheated.

“This is why we are contemplating that at the end of every year, there must be reports on our teachers’ conducts and activities; teachers that are sanctified to be good and efficient need not wait for general promotion, they will be promoted and honoured as at when due.”

According to the chairman, the interactive session which had started with Saki zone was to be held across the six zones in the state and was meant to maintain a good rapport between the commission and its teachers.

Earlier in her welcome address, Saki zonal head, Deaconess Aderonke Oladoyinbo, appreciated the giant stride taken by the present government under the leadership of Engr. Seyi Makinde towards improvement of the educational sector.

“This government is playing a great role to ameliorate the plights of teachers and even students by regular payment of monthly salaries, 13 month even paid, issuance of car loan to teachers, mass promotion of teachers that have stagnated on GL 15, provision of almost 23% of State Budget on Education, free distribution of note and textbooks, intervention classes and many more.”

Oladoyinbo then called on teachers to reciprocate the good gesture of the present administration and cooperate with the government by being efficient at their duty posts.
