Power supply to some parts of Abuja, including the Presidential Villa, has been disrupted following attack on transmission lines by vandals.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at the 132kv transmission line and underground cable transmitting bulk power to the 132kv Central Area transmission substation, Katampe, in the Central Area of Abuja.

Areas affected are Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Life Camp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi and part of Presidential Villa.

Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, engineers have however been mobilized to the site to repair the vandalized cable.

While lamenting the incessant act of vandalism of power cables across the country, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, dispatched a team of engineers to the site to ensure quick restoration of power in the affected areas.

In a statement, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s GM, Public Affairs, appealed to affected residents to bear with the transmission agency, saying efforts were in top gear to ensure repairs of the vandalized cables.

The statement also revealed further that the incident affected 8 No distribution feeders feeding the Central Area and over 60 per cent of power supply to Abuja is involved.

“The vandalism of this critical transmission infrastructure is suspected to have been carried out by unknown persons around Menillum park axis of Abuja.

“The vandals carted away 40 metres of 1x500mm xlpe conductor on the 2No of 132kv transmission line. The incident has affected the power supply to Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi and part of Presidential Villa. TCN engineers have been mobilized to the site to repair the vandalized cable.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN’S General Manager Public Affairs said this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mbah said a series of lines and generators tripping caused instability of the grid leading to the partial disturbance.

She said that the data from the National Control Centre, NCC, revealed that a part of the grid was not affected by the bulk power disruption.

According to her, TCN engineers are already working to quickly restore bulk power supply to the states affected by the partial disturbance.

“Presently, bulk power supply has been restored to Abuja, at 2.49 p. m, and TCN is gradually restoring to other parts of the country.

“We sincerely apologise for every inconvenience this may cause our electricity customers,” she said.

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has summoned the leadership of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, and the Transmission company of Nigeria, TCN, to an emergency meeting over the persistent collapse of the national grid.

The Special Adviser, Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Minister, Mr. Bolaji Tunji, made this known in a statement.

He said the action was taken at the weekend.

It would be recalled that the grid collapsed three times last week, plunging the nation into darkness.

The minister, he said, expressed displeasure at the incident, which he declared, was capable of rubbishing the giant strides made in the last one year which had led to an increased generation and distribution of 5, 527 megawatts, a record generation in three years.

The media aide stated that Adelabu also constituted a forensic investigation committee with a mandate to advise the government on necessary solutions to make the national grid robust and reliable in addition to the ongoing efforts of the government like the Presidential Power Initiatives, PPI, and the Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project, NETAP.

The committee is to also establish the root cause of both incidents, especially a review of potential sabotage on the system.

The committee will holistically review the national grid stability and identify investments and technical capacities required to make the grid smart and resilient.

In addition, a technical team has been deployed to access the critical nodes on the national grid to identify potential vulnerabilities and proffer recommendations to address the vulnerabilities to prevent future disruptions to the grid.

On Monday, October 14, there was a partial collapse due to the tripping of a line at the Jebba Transmission Substation and recurring fault at the Osogbo Transmission Substation.

Efforts to restore the grid further resulted in a setback the following day.

The system was however fully restored on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

READ ALSO: Real reason Senator Ashiru is attacking us –NDLEA

There was no grid collapse on Tuesday as was widely speculated as the setback was a continuation of Monday’s restoration efforts on the grid.

Also what was described on Saturday, October 19, as grid collapse was a deliberate protective shut down of the grid as a result of the explosion of the Jebba transformer.

And this was restored within two hours.

“What we had were more of grid disturbances than collapses”.

Preliminary assessment of Jebba incident suggested that the explosion was as a result of ageing equipment unrelated to the initial collapse.

The six-member committee are Engr. Nafisat Ali, Executive Director, Independent System Operator, ISO, who leads the committee; Dr. Chidi Ike, Commissioner, NERC, Engr. Ishola (GM. National Control Centre (NCC); Engr. Emmanuel Nosike, Director, Transmission, Federal Ministry of Power, FMoP; Engr. Ali Sharifai (GM, Transmission Service Provider (TSP)) and Mr. Adedayo Olowoniyi, Chief Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power.

The team is expected to present a report to the minister by November 1, 2024.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, says the national grid has been restored after experiencing temporary disturbance at about 8:15 a. m. on Saturday.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN’S General Manager, Public Affairs, said this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

Mbah said that TCN engineers at Jebba successfully carried out switchings by isolating the faulty current transformer.

She said that the engineers had equally reconfigured the bus bar arrangement, restoring power supply to the station, and other parts of the grid.

READ ALSO: Drone ‘launched towards’ Israeli PM Netanyahu’s home

Mbah said that according to the report from the National Control Center, NCC, the bus section of a current transformer exploded at 330kV Jebba Transmission Sub-station

“As expected, the protection system was activated, and this promptly opened the bus bars to curtail the explosion, thereby, preventing outbreak of fire and further damage to adjacent equipment.

“The action of the protection system led to a temporary disturbance on the grid,” she said.

The disturbance occurred at approximately 6:48 p.m., prompting immediate recovery efforts.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, in a statement on Tuesday, said the recovery process commenced swiftly, with Azura Power Station providing the necessary blackstart.

She said by 10:24 a.m. on Tuesday, the grid recovery had reached advanced stages, in spite of encountering a brief challenge that caused a minor setback.

“Notwithstanding the setback, TCN continued its recovery efforts, achieving significant progress.

“Bulk power availability has been restored to approximately 90 per cent of its substations nationwide, with supply reinstated to the Abuja axis and other major distribution load centres.

“The partial disturbance did not affect the Ibom Gas generating station, which continued to supply power to areas in the South Southern part of the country, including Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu 132 kilovolt transmission substations.”

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has said that the national grid was restored at about 9.57 p.m. on Saturday after a partial collapse.

TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, said there was a partial disturbance of the grid at about 3.09 p.m. on Saturday.

She stated that operators commenced restoration efforts immediately after the incident, noting that “at about 9.57 p.m. on Saturday, the entire part of the grid that was affected was successfully restored.

“The system disturbance, which brings to three, the partial grid disturbances, with one total disturbance in 2024, is suspected to have been triggered by the unexpected tripping of three units of a power generating station.

READ ALSO: Ayinke House records 2,500 child deliveries monthly –CMD

“It suddenly removed 313 Megawatts from the grid, causing system instability that led to the loss of bulk supply to a section of the national grid.”

Mbah stated that the system operator reacted to the sudden drop in generation which led to a dip in frequency.

She explained that the system operator did that by islanding a section of the grid which included the Ibom Power Station through which the company continued to feed Uyo, Aba, Itu, Eket, Calabar and others, even when the other section of the grid had no supply.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has announced the shutting down of the national grid by the organized labour, a situation which has led to black out nationwide.

The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.

The spokesman said at about 1:15 a.m., the Benin Transmission Operator under the Independent System Operations unit of TCN reported that all operators were driven away from the control room and that staff that resisted were beaten while some were wounded in the course of forcing them out of the control room and without any form of control or supervision, the Benin Area Control Center was brought to zero.

A list of other transmission sub-station shut down was given.

The spokesman said efforts were, however, going on to recover the grid.

The statement by the spokesman reads in full:

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria hereby informs the general public that the Labour Union has shut down the national grid, resulting in black out nationwide. The national grid shut down occurred at about 2.19am this morning, 3rd June 2024.

“At about 1:15am this morning, the Benin Transmission Operator under the Independent System Operations unit of TCN reported that all operators were driven away from the control room and that staff that resisted were beaten while some were wounded in the course of forcing them out of the control room and without any form of control or supervision, the Benin Area Control Center was brought to zero.

“Other transmission substations that were shut down, by the Labour Union include the Ganmo, Benin, Ayede, Olorunsogo, Akangba and Osogbo Transmission Substations. Some transmission lines were equally opened due to the ongoing activities of the labour union.

“On the power generating side, power generating units from different generating stations were forced to shut down some units of their generating plants, the Jebba Generating Station was forced to shut down one of its generating units while three others in the same substation subsequently shut down on very high frequency. The sudden forced load cuts led to high frequency and system instability, which eventually shut down the national grid at 2:19am.

“At about 3.23am, however, TCN commenced grid recovery, using the Shiroro Substation to attempt to feed the transmission lines supplying bulk electricity to the Katampe Transmission Substation. The situation is such that the labour Union is still obstructing grid recovery nationwide.

“We will continue to make effort to recover and stabilize the grid to enable the restoration of normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centres nationwide.”

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has unbundled the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, with the establishment of the Nigerian Independent System Operator of Nigeria Limited, NISO.

The company disclosed this in an order signed by its chairman, Mr Sanusi Garba, and Vice Chairman, Mr Muslim Oseni, in Abuja on Saturday.

According to the order, TCN would transfer all market and system operation functions to the newly formed NISO.

The company said that that was in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023, which provided clearer guidelines for the incorporation and licensing of the independent system operator.

It said that previously, TCN held Transmission Service Provider, TSP, and System Operations, SO, licences issued by NERC.

“With the establishment of NISO, TCN will now transfer its assets and liabilities related to market and system operations to the new entity. According to the order, the Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, has been directed to incorporate a private company limited by shares under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) by May 31.

“This new company, to be named the Nigerian Independent System Operator of Nigeria Limited, NISO, will assume the market and system operation functions as specified in the Electricity Act and the terms of TCN’s system operation licence,” it said.

The company outlined NISO’s responsibilities to include managing assets and liabilities related to market, and system operation on behalf of market participants and consumer groups.

“The new ISO will also negotiate contracts for ancillary services with independent power producers and generation licensees in addition to performing market and system operation functions for the benefit of market participants and system users,” it said.
