He was 62 years old and died after a protracted illness.

Announcement of Nwosu’s death is contained in a message by one of his close associates and former national  team mate, Olusegun Odegbami.

Odegbami who was said to have been in close contact with the midfielder during his illness, disclosed that Nwosu died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

Said Odegbami: “After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4 a.m. this morning.

“He died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday.

“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the bearer of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu, MON.

“May he rest peacefully with our Creator in heaven.”

Nwosu, an indigene of Imo State, was a member of the glorious Green Eagles team that conquered Africa to win the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, alongside Odegbami.

Nwosu was one of the youngest players in the 1980 squad that won the AFCON, as he was just 20 years old at the time.

He went on to represent Nigeria at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, where he scored Nigeria’s only goal at the tournament.

He also earned 80 caps for the national team over an 11-year period from 1980 to 1991.

At the club level, Nwosu began his football career with New Nigerian Bank, NNB, FC of Benin from 1979 to 1985.

He later joined ACB of Lagos in 1985 and also played for ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire and Racing Club de Bafoussam of Cameroon between 1990 and 1992.

He later returned to Nigeria to play again for ACB of Lagos in 1992, where he eventually hung up his boots.

During his coaching career, Nwosu handled the National U-17 team and clubs such as Ibom Stars, Union Bank, and, most recently, Gateway FC of Abeokuta.

He also served as an assistant to his former teammate Samson Siasia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where Nigeria won the silver medal.

Onigbinde, 88, died on Monday.

The announcement was made for the family in a statement issued by Mrs. Bolade Adesuyi on Monday.

The statement reads in part:

“With great gratitude to God for a life well spent.

“We announce the passing of this great man, a Modakeke High Chief, the 1st indigenous Nigerian Super Eagles football coach, father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde who passed unto the great beyond a couple of minutes ago.”

She said the family thanked God for the fulfilled life and his contributions to Nigeria and the world as an unequalled football coach.

“We pray that your soul will rest perfectly in the bossom of your and our Lord Jesus Christ.

“Good night till we meet to part no more,” the statement reads further.

Funeral arrangements, it was said, would be announced later.

Onigbinde was 88th on March 5.

He coached the national team between 1982 and 1984, winning silver at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations after a 1–3 loss to Cameroon in the final.

He first managed the then Green Eagles between 1982 and 1984 before returning to the national team in 2002, when he replaced the late Shuaibu Amodu.

He led the Super Eagles to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

Nigeria crashed out of the tournament at the group stage after suffering a 1–0 defeat to Argentina  and a 2–1 loss to Sweden, before playing out a goalless draw with England.

The late coach later served as the  Special Adviser on Football to the Osun  Government.

The tournament, featuring Iran, Jordan and Costa Rica, is designed to provide high-level international exposure for participating teams.

A statement from Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, on Friday, in Abuja, said the competition aligned with the federation’s technical development plans.

“This tournament offers the Super Eagles quality opposition and valuable international experience,” he said.

Olajire noted that facing teams from different confederations would strengthen tactical adaptability and squad depth ahead of major competitions.

The Super Eagles will open their campaign against Iran at the 17,000-capacity Amman International Stadium on March 27.

“On the same day, Jordan will take on Costa Rica at the 62,000-capacity King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Amman.

“On March 31, hosts Jordan will face Nigeria at the Amman International Stadium, while Costa Rica confront Iran at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium.

“Organisers are expected to announce the official match schedule, including kick-off times, in the coming days,” he said.

The president commended the Super Eagles for putting behind them the disappointment of the semi-final loss to host nation Morocco last Wednesday.

The Super Eagles overpowered Egypt, defeating the seven-time AFCON winner, in a penalty shootout after the regular time, in which the Nigerian team dominated.

President Tinubu stated that the Super Eagles players, through their victory, had once again demonstrated the determination, persistence, and can-do spirit associated with our country.

The president remarked: “Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed.

“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.

“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.

“Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”

The win secured Nigeria’s record 16th AFCON semi-final appearance, setting up a last-four clash with hosts Morocco.

Chelle, who recently marked one year in charge, has been widely commended for turning the Super Eagles into an exciting, cohesive and disciplined side.

A cross-section of Nigerian fans in Marrakech said that Chelle had restored belief, identity and confidence to the national team.

President General of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, NFSC, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, described the victory as a reward for patience and planning.

“This Super Eagles team now plays with purpose, courage and discipline.

“You can see organisation, teamwork and hunger. This is not accidental,” he said.

According to him, the coach has earned the trust of players and fans.

“The players believe in Chelle, and Nigerians can feel that connection,” Ladipo said.

Ladipo urged the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to protect the project.

“If we want sustained success, Chelle must be supported and respected,” he added.

Rev. Samuel Ikpea, National Chairman of the NFSC, said the team’s performance brought joy to Nigerians worldwide.

“This is football that unites the nation and lifts our spirits.

“Chelle has restored confidence, discipline and mental strength to the Super Eagles,” he said.

Ikpea praised the players’ attitude against Algeria, and expressed optimism ahead of the semi-final.

“They fought for every ball and respected the game plan.

“With this mindset, Nigeria can defeat any team in Africa,” he added.

Lily Grace, a UK-based entrepreneur and philanthropist and Founder, Chat My Course Farmers’ Initiative International, also praised the coach for his leadership qualities.

“Chelle has shown that strong leadership and clear vision can rebuild confidence in any team.

“What we see on the pitch reflects what discipline and planning can achieve in society,” she said.

According to her, the Eagles’ performance inspires Nigerians in the diaspora.

“Watching this team makes Nigerians abroad proud and emotionally connected again,” she said.

Femi Oyelade, a multimedia consultant and creative content developer resident in Abuja, urged continued backing for the coach.

Oyelade noted that Chelle’s approach encouraged young Nigerians.

“The progress shows planning and vision. Chelle deserves full support.

“This team gives our youth hope that excellence comes from teamwork and consistency,” Oyelade said.

Abdulrahman Sadiq, a Kano-based fan, said Chelle had transformed Nigeria’s playing style.

“This team is now fearless, organised and the best to watch in Africa,” he said.

Chinedu Okafor from Anambra praised the team’s unity and clarity.

“You now see 11 players fighting together. This is the Super Eagles identity we missed.

“Thank you Chelle for restoring our status as the true giant of African football,” he said.

Musa Bello from Katsina said Algeria were never easy opponents.

“Beating them with this kind of football shows Chelle deserves his flowers now,” he said.

Bello stressed the need for continuity, adding, “Win or lose, Chelle should stay. Proper funding will take this team higher,” he said.

The Super Eagles will face hosts Morocco on Wednesday in the AFCON semi-final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The much anticipated quarter-final encounter between the Super Eagles and the Desert Foxes was played at the Stade de Marrakech with over 84,000 spectators in attendance.

The Super Eagles faced stern resistance before the break, with Algeria compact in midfield, limiting chances in spite of the  pressure from Osimhen, Akor Adams and Ademola Lookman.

Nigeria broke through after halftime when Osimhen powered home Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross in the 47th minute, his fourth goal of the tournament.

Ten minutes later, Osimhen turned provider, releasing Akor Adams, who rounded goalkeeper Luca Zidane and finished calmly to double Nigeria’s lead.

Algeria pushed forward in response but lacked penetration, as Nigeria’s disciplined defence protected goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with authority.

The victory sends Nigeria into their 16th AFCON semi-final, where the Super Eagles will meet hosts Morocco in Rabat.

The Super Eagles, currently in Fès after winning all group matches, are demanding payment of their four-match win bonuses before resuming training or travelling for the game.

Promise Efoghe, the Super Eagles Media Officer, had earlier confirmed that the team would travel from Fes to Marrakech on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final against Algeria.

In spite of the dispute, the players said they remained focused on the Algeria encounter.

They, however, insisted that no further team activities would take place until all entitlements were settled.

A source at the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, said the payment process had been initiated, with funds transferred from the Central Bank of Nigeria to the individual bank accounts of the players.

The source added that players and officials would receive their bonuses once banking procedures were completed.

A similar situation occurred during the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs in Rabat, where unpaid allowances preceded Nigeria’s elimination on penalties against DR Congo.

Saturday’s AFCON quarter-final match against Algeria will kick off at 5 p.m. Nigeria time at the Stade de Marrakech, Morocco.

Both are former African Footballers of the Year. Both have scored three goals at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. Both have assisted each other in those goals.

Indeed, their partnership, past and present, has delivered significant success for the Super Eagles. Yet, personal ambition now appears to be threatening their collective glory.

There is no doubt that Victor Osimhen is a rare talent, just as Ademola Lookman is. However, when individual ambition begins to outweigh collective aspiration, friction becomes inevitable.

That reality played out on Monday during Nigeria’s match against Mozambique, when Osimhen openly reprimanded Lookman for what he perceived as selfish play.

While Osimhen’s reaction may have conveyed a message, it does not entirely absolve him of criticism. His frustration did not appear to stem from a concern for the team as a whole, but rather from a missed personal opportunity.

After reviewing the match footage again, it became clear that Lookman was central to much of Alex Iwobi’s distribution to the forwards, Osimhen and Akor Adams.

In doing so, Lookman created chances not only for his teammates but also for himself.

He had several opportunities to connect Adams, which he did not take, opting instead to attempt to score himself.

Adams, however, did not complain. Notably, Lookman successfully set up Osimhen twice, resulting in goals.

Had Osimhen reprimanded Lookman for failing to pass to Adams, the argument that he was fighting for the team would have held more weight.

After watching Osimhen celebrate his brace with Lookman, one would have expected similar empathy for Adams, who worked tirelessly but had no goal to show for his efforts until Osimhen was substituted and Lookman assisted him to score a beautiful goal.

Had Osimhen reprimanded Lookman for failing to pass to Adams, the argument that he was fighting for the team would have held more weight.

But his outburst came only after Lookman failed to provide him with a clear pass that could have completed a hat-trick.

When Osimhen roared at Lookman, demanding he “play for the team” moments after the Atalanta forward missed a golden opportunity, it became evident that the frustration was personal.

Osimhen is the team’s leading striker, and with that status comes responsibility. If the concern is truly about team success, then equal concern should be shown when other forwards struggle to score.

As for Lookman, he must be reminded that within the Super Eagles setup, he functions primarily as a midfielder. His role should prioritise chance creation over goal hunting, especially when a recognised striker is better positioned.

It is worth recalling that the Most Valuable Player of the last AFCON was not a forward but a defender, William Troost-Ekong, whose impact went beyond goals to include leadership, organisation, and composure.

I follow Osimhen at this AFCON because of his passion. But passion must not turn into anger. It is becoming increasingly evident that under Coach Eric Chelle, more players are showing commitment, even if they are not vocal about it.

God forbid that Prophet Ayodele’s prophecy concerning both Lookman and Osimhen comes to pass. Nigeria must not be denied the glory that lies ahead.

Nigeria’s frontline were in top form as they dismantled Mozambique to ease into the last eight at the end of a one-sided encounter.

The game played at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco on Monday saw Ademola Lookman open scoring in 20th minute.

This was when he steered a precise finish into the top corner after a composed square pass from industrious forward Akor Adams.

Victor Osimhen extended Nigeria’s control with two well-taken goals, struck either side of half-time in the 25th and 47th minute respectively.

The goals effectively ended Mozambique’s resistance and underlined the Super Eagles’ tournament ambitions.

Akor Adams capped an impressive display by smashing home his first goal of the tournament in the 75th minute.

His shot from close range was too hot for goalkeeper Ernan Siluane to handle, as Nigeria maintained relentless pressure throughout.

Nigeria will meet either Algeria or DR Congo in Saturday’s quarter-final, buoyed by confidence and momentum as they continue their pursuit of a fourth continental title.

Victor Osimhen opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, heading home Ademola Lookman’s cross after the Super Eagles squandered several early chances.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi doubled Nigeria’s lead five minutes into the second half, nodding in from Lookman’s inswinging corner to score his maiden international goal.

Lookman then capped a brilliant display with Nigeria’s third goal in the 67th minute, finishing calmly after an unselfish assist from Osimhen to put the Super Eagles firmly in control.

Tunisia pulled one back in the 74th minute through Montassar Talbi’s header, before Ali Abdi converted a late penalty to set up a tense finish.

The Super Eagles, however, held on for their second consecutive win of the tournament, confirming their place in the AFCON 2025 round of 16.

Osimhen’s goal was his 32nd in 46 appearances for Nigeria, leaving him five goals shy of the late Rashidi Yekini’s all-time national record.

Ndidi’s dominant midfield display and landmark goal further underlined Nigeria’s authority, as the Eagles celebrated another morale-boosting win in Morocco.

Nigeria now top the AFCON Group C table with six points after securing two wins from two games played so far.

Tunisia with three points are second on the table, while the Cranes of Uganda and Taifa Stars of Tanzania who played a 1-1 draw in the other Group C encounter are third and fourth on the table, with one point each.

In group D, Benin Republic defeated Botswana 1-0 to keep their hope of making it to the round of 16 alive, while Senegal drew 1-1 with DR Congo in a highly explosive encounter.

The Super Eagles meeting with Tunisia in the group stage of the 2025 AFCON makes it the seventh time they are meeting at the tournament.

Eagles defeated them three times, while Tunisia won once. Their other two encounters ended in penalty shootouts, with both sides winning one each.

The Super Eagles will take on Uganda in their last Group game on Tuesday by 4 p.m. in Fes, while Tunisia will return to Rabat to face Tanzania at the same time.
