Yoruba separatist activist, Chief Sunday Igboho (a.k.a. Sunday Igboho), spoke on Sunday shortly after his release from protective custody.

In a video he released, Igboho read a prepared speech, thanking all the people that showed him love and support during his travail.

He called for more support from all in order to make Yoruba great.

“We need more of your support to deliver our land from the slavery of the Fulani because Yoruba land is ours…”

The statement reads:

“Good day everyone, I remain myself. I am Chief Sunday Adeyemo (a.k.a. Igboho).

“First of all, my sincere appreciation goes to God Almighty, the Master of the Universe, for making this day.

“I want to say a big thank you to all Yoruba sons and daughters all over the world for the love and support after the loss of my dear mother, though she is still kept in the morgue, waiting for me to come and give a befitting burial that she deserves.

“I give special thanks to President of Benin Republic and all members of his cabinet. My thanks also go to my own father, Proforssor Baji Akintoye, and Professor Wole Soyinka for the support in the course of the struggle. May God reward you baba for standing courageously for Yoruba Nation and for me.

“You promised to stand by me through my ordeal in Benin Republic and you have fulfilled your promise.

“I will not forget to appreciate former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Baba Ayo Adebanjo for their roles, even though only God gives freedom. Let me use this opportunity to say thank you to all religious leaders, Pastors, Alfas and Traditional worshippers for the prayers day and night. Our royal father, obas and chiefs in Yoruba land.

“The love and support are appreciated. We need more of your support to deliver our land from the slavery of the Fulani because Yoruba land is ours…

“Let’s join hands to make Yoruba great.”

FrontPage reports that Sunday Igboho was released on Sunday from protective custody in the Republic of Benin.

The information was made available by a reliable source who quoted Yoruba Nation leader, Prof. Banji Akintoye.

The source said he was already on his way to Germany, his destination before he was arrested.

Recall that Igboho fled Nigeria in 2021 when operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, stormed his residence in Ibadan, in bid to arrest him.

Addressing a press conference on the matter, the spokesman of the DSS, Peter Afunanya, on Thursday, July 1, 2021, said 13 suspects, including a female and 12 males, were arrested during the raid.

He was heading towards Germany through Benin Republic when he was arrested and put in protective custody.

Eight supporters of Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly referred to as Sunday Igboho, have been released by the Department of State Services, DSS.

They spent over 60 days in the custody of the DSS since they were arrested on July 1, 2021.

The security operatives stormed the Ibadan residence of Igboho where they were said to have killed two of Igboho’s supporters before arresting the others.

Four of the people arrested are still in the DSS custody.

The released persons were present at a press conference addressed by their lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, on Monday.

Speaking at the press conference, the lawyer insisted that the security agency must account for the two persons said to have been killed when they stormed the residence of Igboho.

It would be recalled that DSS accused Igboho of stock-piling arms, hence the attack.

The operatives stormed Igboho’s residence and arrested 12 persons who were taken to Abuja and detained.

Their detention was challenged in court and the judge of a Federal High Court in Abuja granted them bail.

Their bail was however challenged by the DSS.

Professor Banji Akintoye, leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination group, Ilana Omo Oodua, has debunked the report that he has fled Nigeria to avoid arrest.

He said rather, he relocated to Benin Republic to co-ordinate and supervise the legal rescue of the Yoruba nation advocate, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, in the country.

He said as soon as Igboho was released, he would return to Nigeria, not minding whatever the plot of the federal government might be against him.

His words: “Irrespective of what the Nigerian Government may be planning against me, I want to say without any fear or intimidation that I will be returning to Nigeria immediately Ighoho is released from custody. I can’t be intimidated because I’ve not committed any offence, just like Sunday Igboho.”

The remarks made by Akintoye are contained in a statement issued by his Communications Manager, Maxwell Adeleye.

The statement reads:

“Myself, the President-General and Professor Wale Adeniran (Chairman) of Ilana Omo Oodua, are currently in the Republic of Benin as reported, but not on the run.

“We are here to supervise and coordinate, by all legal and other means, the struggle for the release of our son and patriot, Sunday Adeyemo Igboho, detained by the Government from custody.

“By demanding peaceful self-determination for the Yoruba Nation, I am not breaking any law, since self-determination is recognized by the International and Nigerian laws to be an inalienable right of every Nationality, large or small, in the world.

“I have earned a solid reputation as a highly respected advocate of a peaceful self-determination struggle. I have even written a book on the subject which is already being used as a manual by Yoruba self-determination advocates and organizations.

“Irrespective of what the Nigerian Government may be planning against me, I want to say without any fear or intimidation that I will be returning to Nigeria immediately Ighoho is released from custody. I can’t be intimidated because I’ve not committed any offence, just like Sunday Igboho.

“Let me tell all Yoruba People across the world that there’s no cause for alarm. I didn’t flee anywhere. I am in Benin Republic running your errands. The struggle is no retreat, no surrender.”

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, admitted the 12 detained associates of Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, to a bail.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who granted the eight applicants whose request were not opposed by the Department of State Services, DSS, a bail in the sum of N5 million, admitted the four others to a bail in the sum of N10 million each with two sureties in the like sum.

The applicants the DSS did not oppose their bail request include: Abdullateef Ademola Onaolapo, Tajudeen Irinloye, Diekola Jubril Ademola, Ayobami Donald, Uthman Opeyemi Adelabu, Olakunle Oluwapelumi, Raji Kazeem and Taiwo Opeyemi Tajudeen who are 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th applicants respectively.

The service, however, urged the court not to grant bail to Amudat Habibat Babatunde, Abideen Shittu, Jamiu Noah Oyetunji and Bamidele Sunday listed as 2nd, 5th, 6th and 12th applicants in the application.

Earlier, Counsel to the applicants, Pelumi Olajengbesi, urged the court to grant his clients bail unconditionally.

Olajengbesi made the plea following the production of the 12 detainees before Justice Obiora Egwuatu on Wednesday.

The applicants, who had been in the detention of the DSS since July 2, had approached the court through their lawyer to seek for their fundamental rights enforcement.

Olajengbesi told the court that contrary to the Section 35(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which stipulated that a suspect be charged to court within 24 hours, the DSS had kept the applicants for about 34 days in detention.

He said that it took the order of the court for the respondent (DSS) to allow even the legal representatives of these applicants to have access to them.

He said the experience of the applicants in the facility of the respondent was “a bad taste.”

He said the applicants were arrested for certain offences, after 34 days in the respondent detention, the applicants should have been charged to court.

He argued that to continue to keep the applicants in the custody of the service would amount to an affront on the constitution and infringement on their fundamental human rights as provided by the law.

However, Counsel to the DSS, I. Awo, though opposed the application for bail for four of the applicants in custody, he did not oppose the application for bail for eight others.

He argued that that was due to the level of their involvement in the offences preferred against them.

He hinted that investigation so far had revealed high level of complicity on the part of the four detainees whose bail were opposed to by the service.

“As it is, the respondent is still investigating this matter and while we will not oppose bail to those applicants earlier mentioned, we seriously believe that it is not in the interest of justice and it will not serve the purpose of national security for these four applicants to be granted bail,” Awo said.

The lawyer further argued that the fear of the service was that if granted bail, they might not make themselves available for further investigation and possible prosecution.

He said the law also gave grounds on which a suspect could be detained beyond 24 hours.

According to him, Section 162 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015, set out the conditions or circumstances upon which bail can be refused.

Awo said Paragraph C of the same section provided that where the applicant for bail attempted to intimidate witnesses or interfere with investigation, in such circumstances, bail could be refused.

He said there were credible information on how friends, families and associates of the four applicants were making contacts to the potential witnesses identified by the service.

“They have started making overture to them to compromise investigation and pressurising some not to turn up in the event they (the four applicants) will be charged.

“We believe strongly that these four applicants who are still needed for further investigation will jeopardise the ongoing investigation if released,” Awo told the court.

An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has restrained the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, from arresting and blocking the account of Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

Justice Ladiran Akintola gave the order on Wednesday after listening to the motion exparte filed by Igboho’s counsel, Mr Yomi Alliyu, SAN.

Alliyu had moved the motion exparte, urging the court to grant his application.

Other respondents in the suit are the Director of State Services, Oyo State and the AGF.

None of the respondents was in court or represented by counsel.

Delivering his ruling, Akintola said that he was satisfied with explanation provided by the applicant’s counsel, evidencing the urgent need to grant the application.

The judge ordered and restrained the respondents, their agents or any other security agents acting on their behalf from killing, arresting, detaining or harrassing Igboho.

Akintola also restrained the respondents from interfering with the applicant’s fundamental rights to life, personal liberty, freedom of movement and enjoyment of his property without fear of invasion of his home.

The judge further ordered the respondents from blocking the account of the applicant in any bank or placing no debit on it and to lift same where they had so acted, pending the hearing and determination of the suit.

He, however, adjourned the case till August 18, for hearing of the originating summon.

Aliyu had informed the court that the life of his client was being threatened after the invasion of his house on July 1 by DSS officials.

The counsel informed the court that his client’s property were damaged and one of the occupants killed by the security agents during the invasion.

Mr Pelumi Olajengbesi, counsel to the 12 detained associates of Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, has prayed a Federal High Court, Abuja to admit his clients to bail unconditionally.

Olajengbesi made the plea following the production of the 12 detainees before Justice Obiora Egwuatu on Wednesday.

The applicants, who had been in the detention of the Department of State Service, DSS, since July 2, had approached the court through their lawyer to seek their fundamental rights enforcement.

Olajengbesi told the court that contrary to the Section 35(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which stipulated that a suspect be charged to court within 24 hours, the DSS had kept the applicants for about 34 days in detention.

He said that it took the order of the court for the respondent, DSS, to allow even the legal representatives of the applicants to have access to them.

He said the experience of the applicants in the facility of the respondent was “a bad taste.”

According to him, the applicants were arrested for certain offences, after 34 days in the respondent detention, the applicants should have been charged to court.

He argued that to continue to keep the applicants in the custody of the service would amount to an affront on the constitution and infringement on their fundamental human rights as provided by the law.

However, counsel to the Nigeria’s secret police, I. Awo, though opposed the application for bail for four of the applicants in custody, he did not oppose the application for bail for eight others.

The applicants the DSS did not oppose their bail request include: Abdullateef Ademola Onaolapo; Tajudeen Irinloye; Diekola Jubril Ademola; Ayobami Donald; Uthman Opeyemi Adelabu; Olakunle Oluwapelumi; Raji Kazeem and Taiwo Opeyemi Tajudeen who are 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th applicants respectively.

The service, however, urged the court not to grant bail to Amudat Habibat Babatunde, Abideen Shittu, Jamiu Noah Oyetunji and Bamidele Sunday listed as 2nd, 5th, 6th and 12th applicants in the application.

Justice Egwuatu then stood down the matter for ruling

Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has sent a delegation to Cotonou, Republic of Benin, to observe court proceedings in the case involving an activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.

Mr Adeola Oloko, Personal Assistant/Director of Media and Publicity to the Olubadan, made this known in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan.

Oloko quoted the royal father as stating this in his palace while exchanging views with leaders of Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, CCII, led by the President-General, Mr Yemisi Adeaga.

The Oba, who did not disclose the identity of members of the delegation, said that they would be in court in Cotonou on Monday to observe Igboho’s trial.

He said that the step taken had become necessary in order to assure those who had been besieging his palace, including protesters, that he was not folding his arms over the travails of Igboho and his aides.

“Sunday Igboho lives in Ibadan, got married in Ibadan, reared his children in Ibadan, built houses in Ibadan and, as such, he has the rights to be protected by Ibadan traditional institution within the ambit of the law, just like any other resident of the city,” he said.

Adetunji, who said that he was in constant touch with other traditional rulers in Yoruba land, including the Igboho royal crowns, allayed the fears of a repeat of Yoruba-Fulani collision of 1814.

He, however, urged people to remain calm and be law- abiding, stressing that truth would prevail.

Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly referred to as Sunday Igboho, has been arrested.

His arrest was effected in Contonou, Benin Republic where he was said to be attempting to escape to Germany.

In a report by Sahara Reporters, an online newspaper, Igboho, according to a source, was arrested Monday night by security operatives in Cotonou and plans were afoot to return him to Nigeria.

Another newspaper, The Punch, also quoting a source asserted that Igboho had been arrested.

Recall that the Department of State Service, DSS, declared Sunday Igboho wanted on July 2 after raiding his Ibadan residence.

The DSS directed him to surrender himself or risk being fished out.

He was said to have been on the run when DSS operatives stormed his Ibadan residence.

During the raid carried out by the security agency in Igboho’s house, two persons were killed while 12 others were arrested.

According to the spokesman of the security agency, Dr. Peter Afunanya, Igboho’s residence was stormed based on intelligence that he had stockpiled arms in the place.

Some arms and charms said to have been found in his residence were displayed by the DSS at a press briefing.

The DSS said Igboho and his group, in the guise of campaign for self-determination, had become well-armed and determined to undermine public order.

The arrests and seizures, the agency said, confirmed the grand plan by Igboho to wage a violent insurrection against the Nigerian State.
