The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, LIRS, has extended the deadline for filing of individual annual income tax returns.

The new deadline is April 21, 2026.

The announcement was made on Saturday in a statement issued by the Head, Corporate Communications, LIRS, Monsurat Amasa-Oyelude.

The spokesperson said the extension followed the significant increase in the traffic on its eTax platform in view of the earlier extension of deadline to April 14, 2026.

She said it was observed that more taxpayers endeavoured to meet the filing deadline.

“In view of this development, and to ensure that all taxpayers are provided with adequate opportunity to successfully complete their filings, LIRS hereby announces a further extension of the deadline, now set for April 21, 2026.

“This additional extension is granted in consideration of the overwhelming response and to enhance taxpayer convenience, while maintaining the integrity and accuracy of submissions,” she said.

Amasa-Oyelude reminded taxpayers that the filing of annual income tax returns remained a statutory obligation and encouraged them to take advantage of this final extension to fulfil their civic responsibility.

“The Executive Chairman of LIRS, Dr. Ayodele Subair, on Friday reiterated that all filings must be completed electronically via the LIRS eTax platform: https://etax.lirs.net, which remains the only approved channel for submission.

“For further enquiries or assistance, taxpayers may visit any LIRS office or contact the Agency through its official communication channels,” she said.

LIRS, she announced, expressed its sincere appreciation to taxpayers for their continued compliance and commitment to the filing of their individual annual income tax returns.

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, LIRS, has advised all individual taxpayers in Lagos State to file their annual tax returns for the 2026 year of assessment on or before 31st March 2026.

The statutory filing requirement applies to all taxable persons, including self-employed individuals, business owners, professionals, persons in the informal sector, and employees under the Pay-As-You-Earn, PAYE, scheme.

In accordance with Section 24(f) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sections 13 &14(3) of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 (NTAA), every individual with taxable income is required to submit a true and correct return of total income from all sources for the preceding year (January 1 to December 31, 2025) within 90 days of the commencement of a new assessment year.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Executive Chairman of LIRS, Dr. Ayodele Subair, stated that timely filing remains both a constitutional and statutory obligation as well as civic responsibility.

In his remarks, he stated that “Filing of annual tax returns is not optional. It is a legal requirement under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025. We encourage all Lagos residents earning taxable income to file early and accurately. Early and accurate filing not only ensures full adherence with statutory requirements but supports effective monitoring and forecasting, which are critical to Lagos State’s fiscal planning and long-term sustainability.”

He further noted that failure to file returns by the statutory deadline attracted administrative penalties, interest, and other enforcement measures as prescribed by law.

To enhance convenience and efficiency, all individual tax returns must be submitted electronically via the LIRS eTax portal at https://etax.lirs.net.

The platform enables taxpayers to register, file returns, upload supporting documents, and manage their tax profiles securely from anywhere.

In keeping with global best practices, Dr. Subair reiterated that LIRS continued to prioritise digital tax administration and taxpayer support services.

He affirmed that the LIRS eTax platform was secure and accessible worldwide.

He said taxpayers requiring assistance might visit any of the LIRS offices or use any of the following support channels: Customer Service Hotline: 0700-CALL-LIRS (0700 2255 5477); Email: etaxinfo@lirs.net; Website: www.lirs.gov.ng; Facebook and LinkedIn: Lagos State Internal Revenue Service; Instagram and YouTube: @lirsgovng and X (formerly Twitter): @lirs_govng

The agency also provides step-by-step guidance and support on its digital platforms to ensure a seamless filing experience.

LIRS encourages taxpayers to file early, file accurately, and remain compliant

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, LIRS, has reiterated the statutory deadline of 31st January 2026 for all employers of labour in Lagos State to fulfil their statutory obligation to file their annual tax returns for the 2025 financial year.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Executive Chairman of LIRS, Dr Ayodele Subair, reminded employers that the obligation to file annual returns was in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, NTAA.

Subair explained that employers were required to file detailed returns on emoluments and compensation paid to their employees, as well as payments made to their service providers, vendors and consultants, and to ensure that all applicable taxes due for the year 2025 are fully remitted.

He emphasised that filing of annual returns is a mandatory legal obligation, and warned that failure to comply would result in statutory sanctions, including administrative penalties, as prescribed under the new tax law.

According to Section 14 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, NTAA, employers are required to file detailed annual returns of all emoluments paid to employees, including taxes deducted and remitted to relevant tax authorities.

Such returns must be filed and submitted not later than January 31 each year.

Subair stated, “Employers must prioritise the timely filing of their annual income tax returns. Compliance should be part of our everyday business practice. Early and accurate filing not only ensures adherence to the law as required by the Nigerian Constitution, but also supports effective revenue tracking, which is important to Lagos State’s fiscal planning and sustainability.”

He further noted that in Lagos State, electronic filing via the LIRS eTax platform remains the only approved and acceptable mode of filing, as manual submissions have been completely phased out.

The measure, he said, was aimed at simplifying and standardising tax administration processes in the state.

Employers are therefore required to submit their annual tax returns exclusively through the LIRS eTax portal: https://etax.lirs.net.

Subair described the LIRS eTax platform as secure, user-friendly, accessible 24/7, and designed to provide employers with a convenient and efficient means of fulfilling their tax obligations.

He advised that employers should ensure that the TaxID (Tax Identification Number) of all employees was correctly captured in their filings, noting that employees without a TaxID must generate one promptly to avoid disruptions during the filing process.

Lagos State has accomplished the most advanced technique in its revenue collection and management system with the launch of a one-stop automated portal for the collection of all taxes and levies payable to the state government.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, launched the Lagos Revenue Portal (LRP) — a user-friendly digital platform designed for ease and efficient administration of the State’s Internally Generated Revenue, IGR.

The portal, which evolved from Electronic Banking System of Revenue Cycle Management, EBS-RCM, has now harmonised and integrated various collection avenues into a single revenue stream for ease of management, accountability and distribution.

The achievement marked a major milestone in the trajectory of the state’s journey towards digitisation of its revenue collection process, the journey of which began in 2001 under the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration in the state.

The payer-centric portal leveraged technology for convenience and seamless operations for revenue stakeholders.

On the portal, each revenue-generating Ministry, Department and Agency, MDA, has unique generated code to facilitate levy payment without having to physically visit the office.

Sanwo-Olu described the transition as a “game-changer”, stressing that the progress testified to his administration’s commitment to innovation, transparency and programmes to improve Ease of Doing Business in Lagos.

He said the state’s digitisation of its revenue collection system had further enhanced its competitiveness in the comity of smart cities, noting that the simplified process had removed barriers hindering capacity and efficiency in revenue-generating MDAs.

He said: “This is yet another important milestone in our collective effort and bold steps towards transforming Lagos into the most business-friendly state in the country. The importance of efficient revenue collection cannot be overemphasized. It is the lifeblood of governance and development. Through it, we can fund critical infrastructure, provide essential services and improve the quality of life for every Lagosian.

READ ALSO: NJC recommends Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as CJN

“Lagos Revenue Portal is not just a platform; it is a game-changer designed to streamline the payer enumeration process, making it easier for individuals and businesses to comply with their tax obligations. By simplifying this process, we have removed barriers to compliance, which will boost the state’s revenue base. By transitioning to this digital platform, we are promoting a culture of accountability and transparency in revenue collection.

“This portal aligns with our broader vision of making Lagos a smart city, and a place where technology and innovation drive progress. By digitising our revenue collection process, we are not only enhancing the Ease of Doing Business but also positioning Lagos as a model for other states in Nigeria and beyond. We are setting a standard for governance that leverages technology to deliver efficient and transparent services to the people.”

Sanwo-Olu urged the tax-paying public and stakeholders in revenue space to embrace the innovation, pointing out that the new approach was a necessary change needed to block revenue leakage and enhance transparency.

The success of the portal, the governor said, would depend on its adoption by payers it was designed to serve.

He urged the public to take advantage of the initiative to simplify their interactions with the government, thereby contributing to the growth and development of the state.

“With this platform, we are one step closer to realising our vision of a Greater Lagos, where innovation meets governance and progress is inclusive for all,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Taxation and Revenue, Mr. Abdul-Kabir Ogungbo, said LRP was a key component of the Lagos strategic revenue framework, noting that the operational leg of the portal had fully integrated the data and processes of revenue-generating MDAs.

Ogungbo said the portal had also achieved sector-based harmonisation to allow businesses make single centralised payment to MDAs within the same sector.

“The portal has Artificial Intelligence features powered revenue enquiry services, real time channel for enquiries, complaint and support services. We have also achieved harmonisation between state and local government revenue management,” he said.

Chairman of Lagos Inland Revenue Service, LIRS, Mr. Ayodele Subair, said the new portal would improve operational capabilities and reinforce the trust of the citizens in the government.

He said the transition would foster compliance and strengthen the revenue base of the state.

Chief Executive Officer of Alpha Beta Consulting, Mr. Akinsanya Doherty, said the portal would not only simplify revenue collection, but would also empower the citizens with the information needed to contribute to the growth of the state.

“This is a testament to what we can achieve when we harness the power of technology to improve transparency and efficiency,” Doherty said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed the retiring Assistant Inspector General of Police, Garba Umar, as a Senior Security Adviser on International Police Cooperation and Counter-terrorism in the office of the Minister of Police Affairs.

Malam Garba Shehu, the president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, confirmed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

The president said the appointment was meant to enable Nigeria keep the important position and make way for Umar to complete his nationally beneficial tenure as an Executive Member of the International Police Organisation, INTERPOL.

In approving his appointment, Buhari took note of a precedent in which a former executive member, retired AIG Kamal Subair, was retained in service by the Federal Government of Nigeria after retirement in 2018.

The president also took note of the fact that during his tenure as a member of the Executive Committee, Umar assisted Nigeria in many ways, with the hope that in the remaining one year, he would even do more in securing equipment for crimes, border management and counter-terrorism for the country.

According to him, Umar is also expected to help in getting more Nigerians into important positions in the INTERPOL.

AIG Umar’s tenure at the INTERPOL ends in November 2024, and his new appointment as Senior Security Adviser takes effect from May 16, 2023.

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, LIRS, says January 31 remains the deadline for filing of annual tax returns by employers of labour.

LIRS chairman, Mr Ayodele Subair, made this known in a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Mrs Monsurat Amasa, on Sunday in Lagos.

According to the LIRS chairman, all businesses and employers of labour resident within Lagos State must file their annual income tax returns on or before January 31.

Subair warned that failure to comply with the directive would attract penalties as well as other statutory sanctions as stipulated in the Personal Income Tax Act of Lagos State.

The Act stipulates January 31 as the deadline for filing of annual income tax returns, failing which a penalty accrues.

“For filing the annual income tax returns in Lagos State, the only available platform is the LIRS e-Tax portal: https://etax.lirs.net; the e-Tax portal built for the convenience of taxpayers and is easy, convenient and safe.

“All businesses and employers of labour are advised to use the e-Tax portal to file their returns.

“With the e-Tax system, corporate bodies are expected to find it more convenient to carry out tax transactions in the comfort of their homes and offices.

“Taxpayer identity of all employees is compulsory for the annual income tax returns to be successfully filed on the e-Tax portal.

“Therefore, all employees and taxable persons within the state are advised to generate a taxpayer identity, where applicable and file their individual annual income tax returns on the e-Tax portal,’’ Subair said in the statement.
