The Lagos State government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth and development of the Nollywood industry.

Speaking at the Nollywood Producer’s Summit, on Thursday, the Executive Secretary and CEO of the Lagos State Film and Video Board, Mrs. Adebukola Agbaminoja, emphasized the importance of collaboration, policy support, and government partnership in driving the industry’s success.

“The government has taken concrete steps to nurture talent and promote innovative storytelling in Nollywood. A notable initiative is the Lagos State partnership with the Plotweaver to stage a storytelling competition, where the winning story will be developed into a short film. This initiative reflects our dedication to fostering creativity and excellence in the industry,” Agbaminoja stated.

The Executive Secretary further disclosed the government’s plans to develop policies that encourage investment in the film industry. These policies include offering tax breaks and grants tailored for filmmakers, as well as investing in infrastructure improvement and training programmes to equip emerging filmmakers with the necessary skills to thrive.

Additionally, Agbaminoja highlighted the government’s commitment to capacity building by partnering with film academies to empower emerging talents, further solidifying the state’s support for the growth and development of the industry.

READ ALSO: UBA fined N30m, ordered to refund $163, 592 over unlawful account restriction

“By working together with industry stakeholders, the Lagos State government aims to position Nollywood for lasting success and showcase the best of Nigerian storytelling to the world,” Agbaminoja submitted.

In a related development, the United States government has expressed interest in collaborating with Nollywood creatives.

The Public Relations Officer of the US Consular General Office, the US Consulate General, Lagos, Nigeria, Julie McKay, expressed US government’s intention to leverage foreign training to equip Nollywood professionals with modern skills to produce quality films and content that could be showcased on Netflix and other foreign channels, thereby increasing the market for local and international creatives.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board, Dr. Shuaib Hussieni, has urged film producers to approach the right agencies for necessary documents before producing their films.

He expressed dissatisfaction with producers who bypass the agency for legitimate censorship, instead forging permits and clearance certificates, which often resulted in low-quality or immoral films that contradicted government policies.

The Lagos State government on Thursday reiterated that it is only when residents in the flood plain communities imbibe positive attitudinal change that would help in addressing the menace of flooding in such communities across the metropolis.

Speaking during the year 2025 Coastal Community Advocacy Programme held at the Ikorodu Local Government, Ikorodu, the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji, stressed that everyone had a major role to play in flood prevention and coastal communities’ safety.

The Permanent Secretary who spoke through the Director, Environmental Education Unit, Mrs. Mosurat Banire, while highlighting the theme of the programme “From Awareness to Action, Enhancing Coastal Safety through Environmental Education” added that it struck at the heart of various environmental challenges that directly affected the flora and the fauna.

“As we engage in today’s programme, let us move beyond discussions, let’s all walk the talk, imbibe attitudinal change, commit to sustainable actions in our lifestyles, influence others and be a change agent,” he said.

He explained that Lagos is a low-lying coastal state, particularly vulnerable to flooding with increasing rainfall intensity, rising sea levels, and poor waste disposal habits saying with the above challenges the coastal zones are at risk more than ever.

He added that the impacts were visible and the reality demanded urgent, coordinated actions not just from government institutions but from every member of the community and stakeholder ownership is very important.

READ ALSO: Egbe Akomolede ati Asa Yoruba announces details of 49th ANC

He said the Community Environmental advocacy went beyond awareness as it inspired behavioural change, empowered communities with practical knowledge, and fostered a sense of shared responsibility, equipped residents with knowledge on flood risk management and early warning systems.

He added that the environmental advocacy also promoted environmental best practices such as keeping drains clear, reducing plastics while strengthening the collaboration between government, community associations, and civil society for long-term resilience.

Gaji emphasized that the state government had continually invested in drainage rehabilitation, shoreline protection, and community sensitization, adding that the aforementioned efforts must be met with local commitments.

He stressed that flood prevention in coastal communities and ecosystems sustainability could only be achieved when market traders discouraged indiscriminate waste disposal, artisans avoided building on floodplains and residents embraced sustainable sanitation and hygiene practices across the state.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Deputy Director, Environmental Education, Mrs. Olufunke Olaleye, noted that flooding had become one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing coastal communities worldwide and Lagos State was no an exception.

She added that in recent times some areas in the state witnessed flooding issues caused not only by climate change but also by human-induced activities such as poor waste disposal, unplanned urban development, blockage of drainage channels, and disregard for environmental regulations.

The Guest Speaker and Director, Environmental Assessment Departement, Dr. Olasunkanmi Sojinu, during his presentation titled “Man and his Environment – The Siamese Twins” said the earth was the only planet that supported life, Man’s only Home and Man’s only Environment.

He stressed that some of the human induced activities that hurt the environment include bush/ refuse burning, air pollution from industrial facilities/ generators/ vehicular emissions, indiscriminate wastes disposal, unnecessary tree falling, open defecation and blocking of drainage channels amongst others.

It’s a good omen perhaps for Ghana that its just concluded election on the eve of World Anti-Corruption Day was devoid of tension even as the will of the people triumphed. The ruling party was roundly defeated. Interestingly, conceding defeat by Vice-President Bawumia was not much of a task at all. “We have conceded defeat like any consummate democrat. But we have not abandoned the fight to transform Ghana,” Vice President Bawumia declared. So, it’s a new dawn in Ghana. Congratulations to Ghanaians on the triumph of the people’s power.

The battle is however far from being over taking a cue from the Nigerian experience. Ghanaians must not go to sleep yet. Indeed, replacing a non-performing party is the real start for serious policing of the new government. The new Sherrif in town must be meticulously monitored. Thankfully, the world, courtesy of technology, is becoming increasingly transparent, so there is no hiding away for too long by any government or their functionaries with any indecency.

Ghanaians need be reminded that Nigerians performed a similar feat in 2015 believing wrongly in the possibility of consistency of politicians. The PDP government of President Jonathan had done everything possible to register the incorrigibility of his team with incidents of degeneracy of governance everywhere. His party did not seem bothered while the man at the head of the government betrayed unprecedented incompetence in government in Nigeria. The media, almost in unison, labelled it cluelessness.

The leading opposition party, All Peoples Congress, took advantage of the state of anomie inflicted on the nation by the sitting government. As a coalition of parties, they readily recognized the people’s major concern, which was corruption. They got a most persistent political figure with some outstanding profile in anti-corruption fight to lead the campaign as the presidential candidate. Muhammadu Buhari had been the head of a previous military government that prioritized anti-corruption as its main concern. Within its very short stay in power it registered its commitment to fight corruption but that did not endure enough to impact seriously on the country. The military government Buhari headed was toppled and the rest was history.

As the world celebrates another World Anti-Corruption Day, Monday, December 9, this year, citizens in Nigeria and around the world should ensure they reckon with their votes as serious investment in the future of generations even yet unborn. It is never too early to activate the monitoring mechanism and no quantum of energy deployed is never too much.

The general elections in Nigeria in 2015 was therefore another opportunity for Buhari to re-enact his commitment especially as the lethargic sitting government barely remained there to convince no one on its readiness to raise the falling hope of the people. The PDP government was roundly defeated giving way to the ascent of Muhammadu Buhari. The new government initially tried to signal commitment to good governance but was soon overwhelmed by its bad guys with manifestations of incompetence almost everywhere. Buhari’s party has remained in office.

A seemingly better prepared candidate of Buhari’s party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has taken over the reins of government following a most contested election followed with a protracted legal fight. The interesting thing is that Nigerians, particularly the opposition, have been relentless in spite of the legal victory. Nigerians have kept on pushing for the uprightness of governance fundamentals and the judiciary, though seemingly unprecedentedly embattled, has been making efforts to reassure that the will of the people shall triumph.

Citizens’ efforts to whip folks in government into line is more needed than ever before in Nigeria to activate good governance and see it impact on people. If governance had not been sufficiently impactful on the citizens, it probably had been because the third tier of the Nigerian federal system had not been quite functional. Its non-performance or under-performance has been largely due to corruption.

READ ALSO: Yuletide: Beware of fake drinks, NAFDAC warns Nigerians

A Local Government Chairman in Ogun State, Hon. Wale Adedayo, refused to pretend that all was well after the electoral victory and spoke out loud enough. The Governor of his state, Dapo Abiodun, reckoned that Wale was rude and got his obviously lily-livered councilors to get him out with impeachment so he could continue to control the finance of not only the concerned LG but all the local government funding as had been the practice for long. But the illicit thought of that governor was not in tandem with the law.

The Federal Government appeared to have reasoned along with the ‘sacrificed’ Chairman Wale Adedayo. Wale’s head was like the proverbial stubborn head used to crack the coconut for the world to savour. FG later sought to formalize the LG financial autonomy and therefore headed for the court.

Subsequently, the Nigerian Supreme Court made a landmark decision on July 11, 2024, granting financial autonomy to local governments in Nigeria. This ruling directs that the 774 local government councils be allowed to independently manage their finances, collect revenues, and allocate resources without interference from state governments.

The court’s seven-member panel, led by Justice Emmanuel Agim, declared that the long-standing practice of state governors receiving and holding onto local government funds is illegal and unconstitutional. This decision upholds a lawsuit filed by the federal government, aiming to strengthen local government independence.

Expectedly, the Labour Party welcomed this decision, stating that it would put an end to the debate on whether local governments deserve autonomy to address challenges facing their constituents. The party emphasized that this autonomy comes with huge responsibility, and local government councils must ensure prudent management of resources.

This ruling is expected to enhance grassroots development, reduce suffering, and promote accountability at the local level. It is therefore now the turn of the people to insist on full realization of the supposed goal of the historic judicial pronouncement. As Nigerians would say, E get why.

A reinforcement also requiring citizens’ strong backup was yet another landmark judgement. Following the allegation of corrupt self-enrichment against Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC moved against the former governor. It turned out that the governor preferred dodging arrests and issues instead of coming out to clarify issues.

In what was a clear disregard for the doctrine of covering the field applying to parliamentary enactments at the federal level, the former Kogi governor enlisted the support of other state governments to outrightly deactivate EFCC. They went to court to seek its delegitimisation but ran into a brick wall. Sixteen in all, these states argued that the EFCC Establishment Act violates the Constitution. The Supreme Court, however, ultimately dismissed the suit, ruling that the EFCC Establishment Act did not require ratification by the Houses of Assembly of the 36 states. This put paid to their evil machination. It is a second grand fall for the governors in their anti-people posturing.

Citizens have therefore been reassured of sufficient basis to not only monitor the governors and their appointees but also the less entrenched Local Government, LG, officials who have just won the battle for financial empowerment. Indeed, citizens need not only pay more attention to the conduct of LGs for the welfare of the grassroots but also to accord proper honour to all heroes of the struggle including Hon Wale Adedayo, the most recent of them all.

Some parents of students of Oriwu Model College in Ikorodu on Sunday protested the sudden increase of boarding fees by the Lagos State government.

The parents, who carried out the peaceful protest at the gate of the college, demanded the immediate reversal of the boarding fees which was increased from N35,000 to N100,000.

Mr Kazeem Oladuni, Chairman, Parents Forum Association, PFA, Oriwu College, appealed to the state Ministry of Education to reverse the increment to enable their wards resume school.

“Our children were supposed to resume on September 9, but we received a memo that one week has been added, which expired today, September 15.

“To our surprise, another memo came out on September 13, indicating that the boarding fees have been increased from N35,000 to N100,000

“We held a meeting with Lagos State Coordinator of PFA and resolved that the fees are outrageous for any parent at this time of hardship in the country,” he said.

READ ALSO: NEMA warns of imminent flood in Rivers

Also, Mrs Adedoyin Badmus, who spoke on behalf of parents in Igbogbo area, Ikorodu, said education was supposed to be free.

Badmus, however, said the government was making it difficult for the children of many average Nigerians to acquire education with the sudden and astronomical increase in boarding fees.

Similarly, another parent, Mrs Mary Enaayi, appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to consider the plights of many parents who are petty traders and struggle to ensure that their children access quality education.

Enaayi urged the state government to urgently reverse the fees to allow dividends of democracy to cut across all strata of society.

“I am appealing to Lagos State government to consider that some parents are traders, but because they want their children to have quality education, that is why they registered them as boarders.

“With this outrageous amount, the careers of those wards will be shattered because their parents cannot afford to pay the N100,000.

“Some have two or three children in the school, which means they have to withdraw due to the sudden increment,” she said.

The parents carried placards with inscriptions like ‘No reduction, No resumption’, ‘We need free education’, ‘Our government is wicked’, ‘N35,000 to N100,000 is too outrageous’, among others.

Police in Lagos State have arrested three fraudsters who pick passengers in their car and begin to argue about dollars in the boot to bait and defraud their victims.

Police spokesman in Lagos State, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated on Wednesday that the three suspects – two men and a lady were arrested on the Lagos mainland after a similar arrest was made on Lagos Island on Tuesday.

He explained that the fraudsters would deliberately start an argument about dollars in the boot of the car, making unsuspecting passengers to intervene and subsequently get defrauded.

Hundeyin added that the three persons were arrested after an alarm was raised by people who recognised them that they had picked potential victims in their Toyota Camry car.

Police also impounded their operational vehicle, he stated.

“The suspects will be arraigned at the conclusion of investigation,’’ the police spokesman assured.

The Lagos State Government Sunday said that a three-floor building under construction that partially collapsed on Ladipo Oluwole Street, Apapa, ignored the stop work and seal up orders of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA and continued construction behind the scene.

The collapse incident, which was flagged on the Physical Planning incident management platform on Sunday evening, triggered immediate preliminary enquiries that showed that officers of the States Building Control Agency had issued a number of contravention notices, stop work and seal up orders which the developer ignored and carried on construction without any recourse, whatsoever, to the authorities.

There has been no report of any casualty, while the site has been cordoned off and taken over by LASBCA.

According to the government, “This particular incident, like similar others, reinforces governments repeated calls for responsible behaviour on the part of all stakeholders in the built environment.

“Lagos State Government has immediately activated inquiries into the collapse to unravel the minute details and guide appropriate actions.”
