Retired employees of Shell Nigeria celebrated a reunion at an annual golf tournament held in their honour by Shell Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo) at the picturesque Lakowe Golf Course in Lekki, Lagos.

A total of 47 former employees teed off at the 4th annual golf tournament and were joined by SNEPCo leadership led by Managing Director, Ronald Adams and his wife, Pleashette Adams.

The tee-off was jointly performed by Ehis Uzenabor, Managing Director of the Shell Closed Pension Fund, alongside former Shell leaders: Egbert Imomoh, former Deputy Managing Director of SPDC; Jimmy Ahmed, former Business and Government Director; and Simbi Wabote, former Shell Director and immediate past Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB.

On the course, competitive spirit met seasoned skill.

Dr Okuns Ohiosimuan emerged as the Overall Male Winner, playing off a handicap of 35 to return an impressive net score of 63 (-9).

In the ladies’ category, Justina Dibua claimed the Overall Female Winner title with a handicap of 31 and a net score of 77 (+5).

These awards were presented by Ron.

The Male and Female Runner-up prizes went to Claude Esekody and Kate Iyamu respectively, presented by Mutiu Sunmonu, former Managing Director of SPDC and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria.

“This event is not just about golf; it’s about celebrating the people who laid the foundation of our success,” Ron said. “Our retirees remain an integral part of the Shell family, and initiatives like this reflect our commitment to wellness, inclusion, and enduring relationships.”

Mutiu Sunmonu described the tournament as “awesome and refreshing,” praising the opportunity for retirees to reconnect. “It was heartwarming to see former colleagues share memories and enjoy healthy competition. The bonds built over decades clearly endure,” he noted.

In his closing remarks, retiree Rowland Ukpedor said: “Even in retirement, the spirit of golf and the friendships it fosters never fade,” and thanked Shell “for creating such a memorable experience and continued support in promoting wellbeing of retirees, sportsmanship and comradeship.”

Shell Nigeria on Tuesday won the Best Upstream Company 2024 award at the Nigerian International Energy Summit, NIES, held in Abuja.

The award, received by Senior Vice President, Nigeria, Marno de Jong, celebrates the contributions of Shell companies in Nigeria, especially The Shell Petroleum Development of Nigeria Ltd, SPDC, and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company, SNEPCo, who pioneered oil production onshore and offshore respectively.

“We’re pleased at the recognition of our efforts in the Upstream sector in Nigeria,” Marno said while commenting on the award.

“We’re grateful to our partners, particularly the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, regulatory agencies, host communities and other stakeholders for their support in our operations. We’ll like to rely on their co-operation as we continue to power progress in Nigeria.”

The achievements of Shell companies have launched Nigeria into the league of oil producing nations.

SPDC achieved the first oil export in Nigeria in 1958 while SNEPCo began production at Bonga, Nigeria’s first deep-water well in 2005.

READ ALSO: UTME: No extension of registration after March 8, JAMB warns

Over the years, the operations of these and other Shell companies have not only contributed to the national purse to finance development but provided Nigerians the chance to acquire vital skills in the oil industry and enabled indigenous businesses to grow their capacity. A robust social investment portfolio has also improved lives in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Chairman of Shell Companies in Nigeria and Managing Director SPDC Osagie Okunbor said: “The NIES award is also a celebration of our commitment to Nigeria’s future through our latest investments. These include SPDC’s project for the construction of a facility at Iseni, Bayelsa State to supply 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, MMScF/d, to the Dangote Fertiliser and Petrochemical Plant in Lekki, Lagos State and the Final Investment Decision, FID, by SNEPCo on the Bonga North deep-water project valued at $5 billion. Our partnership with Nigeria remains strong and focused.”

Late last year, the Nigerian Gas Association, NGA, and the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria, PETAN, honoured Shell Companies in Nigeria for their contributions to the development of gas resources and Nigerian content.

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, has commended the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, SPDC, for the in-country fabrication of two Single Point Mooring, SPM, buoys by Prime Sources Limited, PSL, an indigenous company based in Warri, Delta State.

SPMs are floating facilities used for loading liquids and gas offshore and were first fabricated locally for the Bonga floating, production, storage and offloading, FPSO, vessel of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Ltd., SNEPCo, in 2006 by Dorman Long Engineering Limited with headquarters in Lagos.

SPDC awarded the contract for the two buoys to the indigenous company, PSL, which is delivering the facilities in line with world-class quality standards as attested to by the International Registrar and Classification Society in Norway, Det Norske Veritas, DNV, and a team of resident engineers from IMODCO, PSL’s technical partner in France.

The buoys will be installed offshore at Bonny and Forcados terminals this year.

“Awarding such a technically complex scope to a local contractor highlights SPDC’s commitment to local content development,” NCDMB Executive Secretary Felix Omatsola Ogbe said when he toured the project site at the Julius Berger Port in Warri recently.

“I want to especially commend SPDC for believing in the indigenous contractor. I commend the contractor for delivering the project in good time without any injury and the community for their support.”

SPDC Director, and General Manager, Safety and Environment, Conventional Oil and Gas, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Mrs. Elozino Olaniyan, said: “The project reiterates Shell’s commitment to the economic development of Nigeria and improving the capacity of local vendors.”

SPDC’s Domestic Gas, Forcados Yokri Integrated Project and Terminals Project Manager, Chris Ubuane, said: “We’re pleased that PSL will deliver the first buoy within a year with a team of over 90% of Nigerians performing various tasks including project management, piping and structural fabrications, scaffolding, welding, fitting, blasting and painting. SPDC will continue to work with PSL to grow their capability in buoy fabrication and maintenance.”

Managing Director, Prime Sources Limited, Francis Anyakwo, thanked SPDC for the opportunity to “undertake this complex project,” and NCDMB for the support which has enabled the company to transform to a major subsea contractor in the oil and gas industry.

Secretary of the Ijaw Kingdom Traditional Council, Chief Anthony Jolomi, and representative of the Itsekiri Kingdom, Dr. Omiwere-Ete George Boyo, also expressed gratitude to SPDC for the project, pledging that the community would continue to provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the area.

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, SPDC, has called for continuous collaboration between professional associations in the oil and gas industry and government agencies to ensure the sector contributes more effectively to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

Such collaboration, it said, could result in investments in research and development that would ensure technological innovations not only in the oil and gas industry but also in other sectors of the economy.

SPDC Exploration Manager, Gogo Eneyok, made the call in Abuja where the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, NMGS, began its 60th Annual International Conference on February 16-21, with the theme “Transformation of the Mineral, Energy, Water and Construction Sectors through innovations.”

He said: “SPDC has sustained its decades-old partnership with the NMGS, sponsoring conferences, providing internship opportunities for professionals and the academia and supporting research, especially through the provision of real-time data from the industry to improve the quality of academic work.”

Eneyok added: “Shell continues to power progress in Nigeria through our operations on land, shallow and deep-water waters, as well as in gas and renewables and will provide opportunities for industry professionals to innovate and keep pushing the limits of research and development. It is indeed, a time where all professionals and government must deliberate on the various aspects of the energy sector.”

In his address at the conference, NMGS president, Prof Akinade Olatunji, enjoined Nigerian government to trust its citizens’ capabilities to guide the nation on a “trajectory of consistent growth that will wipe out poverty.”

READ ALSO: Tax reform bills: Senate begins public hearing on Feb 24

He said: “The NMGS conference has grown from a very humble beginning 60 years ago to become the flagship of all the geosciences and mining professionals’ conferences in Nigeria. We are confronted by a vast changing world order. It is against this background of a changing world order and the fervent need to be self-sufficient in all spheres that we have identified the need for innovation in solving the myriads of challenges in the various sectors of the Nigerian economy.”

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, in company with senior officials of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) on Tuesday undertook a tour of facilities at Brightwaters Energy Limited, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The tour to the company’s facilities at Choba, Port Harcourt, and Emohua in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State was a follow up to the NCDMB’s boss earlier visit to the company and some pipe coating facilities in May 2024.

At that visit he pledged the Board’s support for local service companies, giving them opportunities in the oil and gas industry and creating jobs in the economy.

The latest visit was to assess Brightwaters Energy’s upgrade of its technical capabilities, which would position them for upcoming industry projects.

Speaking ahead at the visit, Engr. Ogbe conveyed the Board’s determination to ensure that capabilities of local oil and gas service companies were known and adequately utilised by operating companies in the industry to boost local content and provide employment, in line with the economic aspirations of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

He recalled that Brightwaters had performed well in the execution of projects in the exploration and production segment of the industry over the years with a clientele that included SPDC and Chevron Nigeria Limited, among other major oil and gas operators.

He was convinced that the company had the capacity required for key scopes in upcoming industry projects.

He charged operating oil and gas companies to always support qualified service companies, while ensuring that the best quality service is delivered at all times and on schedule.

In opening remarks at the event, the Community and Corporate Affairs Manager of Brightwaters, Mr. Solomon Aluge, confirmed that the firm had been engaging the team from SPDC and was equipped to carry out heavy or light fabrication works.

He indicated that Brightwaters had carried out many onshore and offshore pipeline engineering and installation works for various clients.

Elaborating on the scope of operations of his company in the oil and gas sector, he pointed out that Brightwaters is “mobilizing for Chevron and Tulcan pipeline works” at the moment.

Earlier in welcome remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of Brightwaters, Mr. Scott Gregory, expressed happiness at the presence of the Executive Secretary, Engr. Ogbe, and the representatives of SPDC at the meeting, assuring all that the company has enormous capabilities for services in the oil and gas industry.

He provided technical details of a number of projects executed by the company offshore and onshore in its many years of operation in Nigeria, noting that some of the upcoming field projects were well within the company’s competencies.

Among key facilities visited in the tour were a blast furnace, where the process of smelting was demonstrated with hot compressed air being blasted into a furnace from below, and a multipurpose offshore construction vessel known as Sea Horizon Derrick Lay Barge, with a heavy-lift capacity of 1,320 tons.

Marine construction activities performed by the vessel, according to the company, include “installation of rigid and flexible pipelines, risers and umbilicals [flexible hoses that connect surface equipment to subsea equipment].”

In his comments after the facility tour, the General Manager Local Content Shell, Mr. Lanre Olawuyi conveyed the company’s good impressions with the facilities and capabilities of Brightwaters Energy.

He affirmed that the technical teams would review their reports and take decisions how to engage the company in some of their upcoming projects.

He expressed delight that the company had upgraded its facilities since the last visit in May 2024, and expressed hope that facility would attract more patronage from the oil industry so it would bounce back to its former glory.

On the entourage of the Executive Secretary were the Director, Project Certification and Authorisation Division (PCAD), Engr. Abayomi Bamidele, Deputy Manager, Corporate Communications and Zonal Coordination, Dr. Obinna Ezeobi, a technical staff in the Executive Secretary’s office, Mr. Ilu Ozekhome.

Shell companies in Nigeria are among more than 700 oil and gas entities taking part in the 13th edition of the Practical Nigerian Content forum in Yenagoa, where they restated their commitment to the development of Nigerian companies through contract awards and scaling up of expertise.

The four-day conference with the theme “Deepening the Next Frontier for Nigerian Content Implementation” began today and will see the hosts, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, and participating companies review progress on the development of Nigerian content pertaining to the implementation of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Development, NOGICD, Act since it was enacted in 2010.

Shell companies in Nigeria are participating at the forum with a strong message of support for Nigerian companies, having awarded contracts worth $1.98 billion to the businesses in 2023 in continuing effort to develop Nigerian content in the oil and gas industry.

The contracts, awarded by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, SPDC, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited, SNEPCo, and Shell Nigeria Gas, SNG, present a three per cent increase from the 2022 performance of $1.92 billion.

Business Opportunity Manager for SNEPCo’s Bonga South-West Aparo Project Olaposi Fadahunsi, representing SNEPCo Managing Director, Ron Adams, told participants at the opening of the forum that several benefitting companies had taken advantage of the patronage to expand their operations and improve their expertise and financial strength.

READ ALSO: Tonnie Iredia, Lai Mohammed, others to speak at IPI conference

“Shell companies execute a large proportion of their activities through contracts with third parties, and Nigeria-registered companies have been key beneficiaries of this policy aimed at powering Nigeria’s progress,” Fadahunsi said.

He commended the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, for ensuring compliance with the Nigerian Content Act.

In addition to contract awards, Shell companies have implemented projects under the Human Capital Development Fund, including the Niger Delta University learning centre and digital library project and the Federal University of Technology Information Technology Hub.

Both projects were inaugurated this year, in collaboration with SPDC Joint Venture partners – Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), TotalEnergies and Nigeria Agip Oil Company Limited (NAOC).

Other projects include the University of Lagos Geosciences Centre of Excellence, Nigeria Diving School and funding of ongoing research at the University of Ibadan to develop a synthetic-based drilling fluid.

Shell Companies in Nigeria also continue to develop indigenous manpower through scholarship programmes with over 3,772 undergraduate and 109 Niger Delta post graduate scholarships since 2016.

Fadahunsi added: “As we speak, beneficiaries of the 13th edition of the Niger Delta Post Graduate Scholarship awards are pursuing their studies in the United Kingdom. The employability rate of the scheme is high with over 98% of the graduates who won the awards securing employment in the oil and gas industry, academia and Information Technology, among other sectors, within one year of completing their studies. Nigerian content will continue to be an important part of Shell operations.”

A total of 9,000 youths in the Niger Delta have acquired entrepreneurial skills in the LiveWIRE programme of the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, SPDC, since it was introduced in 2003 as part of efforts to boost employment opportunities among people aged 18 – 35 years.

The recipients were trained and supported with start-up grants and business mentorship enabling them to launch their own businesses and become employers of labour.

The latest training, sponsored by the SPDC Joint Venture which includes the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, TotalEnergies and Nigerian Agip Oil Company, involved more than 1,000 young entrepreneurs from host communities in Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states.

They graduated last week in Port Harcourt having developed business plans and pitched them to experts as part of the training.

654 trainees were selected as best-performers.

“We’re delighted at the success of the LiveWIRE programme,” SPDC Director and Head Corporate Relations, Igo Weli, said at the graduation ceremony.

“This training is set aside for young people from our host communities which means they can also enjoy the benefits of the programme and join the teeming number of entrepreneurs, several of whom now have the chance to participate in SPDC’s business as vendors. LIveWIRE is one of many ways through which Shell and her partners are powering progress in Nigeria.”

The graduation ceremony featured a technical conference with the theme, “Unlocking Growth: Leveraging Policies to Build an Inclusive Tech Eco System in the Niger Delta.”

The keynote speaker, Iyke Kemabonta, and panelists, Soala Jumbo, Davies Awongo, Kalada Briggs, Vivien Ene and Ezieke Amaefula, challenged the beneficiaries to grow their businesses, overcome environmental challenges and enable the Niger Delta to reap the rewards of the programme.

Trainees from the 2023 Regional LiveWIRE programme from Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Edo states also joined the graduation ceremony.

Beneficiaries were inducted into the LiveWIRE Alumni Group by three previous participants who now run their own businesses – Precious Adeho, Queen Esther Bolou-Ebi and Kalada Briggs.

The trio encouraged the recipients to use the opportunity as launching pads into international recognition and success.

In a notable achievement, five previous beneficiaries won the LiveWIRE International “Go and Trade Enterprise Linkage Award” which enabled them to embark on trade visits to London, Dubai, Malaysia, and neighboring Ghana.

Livewire Nigeria also offers beneficiaries the chance to compete for the Global Shell LiveWIRE Top Ten Innovators Award which comes with huge rewards.

LiveWIRE is Shell’s global enterprise development initiative for small businesses and is active in 18 countries.

As at 2023, the programme had trained about 3,400 people and helped create more than 1,200 jobs around the world.
