Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, Ebonyi Command on Wednesday, allegedly shot one person dead and injured three others in a clash between policemen and a soldier.

The State’s Police Commissioner, Mrs Adaku Uche-Anya, confirmed the incident to reporters in Abakaliki.

Uche-Anya explained that the victim was shot dead when a bullet went off from an officer’s gun during a scuffle between the police team and a motorcyclist who claimed to be a soldier.

“In response to the rising incidents of motorcycle theft and snatching in Abakaliki, officers from the command were conducting a routine patrol on the old Enugu-Abakaliki road near the Ugwuachara area when they stopped an individual riding a motorcycle to request the motorcycle’s particulars.

“The individual claimed to be a soldier but was unable to provide identification. As the officers attempted to arrest him for this reason, he resisted and began to grapple with one of the officer’s rifles.

“This struggle resulted in an accidental discharge of ammunition, which tragically resulted in the death of one man and injuries to three others.

“Both the police officer and the individual involved in this incident are currently in custody. The police command extends its condolences to the family of the deceased,” she said.

The police commissioner assured the public that the command would carry out a thorough investigation on the incident and any person found culpable would face the full extent of the law.

An unidentified soldier has reportedly stabbed police Inspector Saka Ganiyu to death at the Ojo area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the deceased police officer was attached to a Lagos State task force.

A credible source, who confirmed the death to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Thursday in Lagos, said that the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 6.30 a.m. at Volks Bus Stop on Lagos-Badagry Road.

It was learnt that the police officer was carrying out lawful enforcement with his team members when an unregistered T4 Volkswagen commercial bus drove against traffic.

“The bus was driven by a man, who identified himself as a soldier.

“In an ensuing altercation, the said soldier called his colleagues, who came out from the Ojo Army Barracks with dangerous weapons and attacked the police team.

“While the attack was on, the task force called for reinforcement and more policemen were swiftly mobilised to the scene and repelled the soldiers.

“One Insp Saka Ganiyu, a member of the police team, who sustained injuries during the attack was rushed to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for treatment,” the source said.

He added that the injured officer later died in the hospital while undergoing treatment.

READ ALSO: Palestinian death toll passes 42,000 in Gaza

According to the source, the corpse has been deposited at a mortuary for autopsy and preservation, while the command has begun investigation into the case.

The spokesperson for police command in Lagos State State, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, which confirmed the death in a statement, said it had begun investigation into the incident.

The Deputy Director of Army Public Relations in the division, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, said in the statement on Thursday that the army regretted to inform the public of an unfortunate incident.

He said that the incident occurred on October 9, 2024, and involved a soldier and a policeman following an altercation related to alleged traffic rule violation.

“The incident, which is under investigation, escalated and resulted in the death of the policeman.

“The soldier suspected to have committed the offence has since been apprehended and handed over to the military police for investigation and further disciplinary procedures.

“The incident is highly regrettable given the division’s commitment to the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement.

“The Nigerian Army has continuously sensitised its personnel not to engage in activities that would tarnish its image and breach the trust with other security agencies as well as the civil populace,” he said.

Ayeni said that the army would continue to collaborate with security agencies to ensure security of lives and property in line with its constitutional mandate.

Gunmen attacked the residence of a Kaduna State University lecturer, Dr Ahmed Buba, in Zaria, Kaduna State, on Monday and seized his six children.

The gunmen also shot a soldier, Ebuka Okechukwu, dead.

The soldier died of gunshot wounds in a hospital.

They abducted Rabi Isya, Dr Buba’s neighbour’s wife, and two of her children.

The bandits were, however, intercepted on Tuesday.

A highly reliable source said the bandits numbered about 30; they were armed with sophisticated weapons with which they shot sporadically into the air as they attacked the community.

“The joint personnel of Kaduna State Vigilance Service, the military and the police swiftly responded to a distress call.

“On sighting the security personnel, the bandits opened fire and in the process killed the soldier,’’ the source said.

Malam Haruna Shika, a resident of the area said the six kidnapped children were rescued at Kasuwan Da’a in Zaria local government area.

Reacting to the incident on Tuesday, Lt. Joy Abah, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Army Depot, Zaria, said the information on the death of the soldier had not reached her.

All-day-long attempts to get the police to react were abortive as police spokesman in the state refused to respond to calls and to text messages.

The 7 Division General Court Martial sitting in Maiduguri , Borno State, has sentenced a trooper, Pte. Azunna Mmadu-Abuchi to death by firing squad for killing an officer, Lt. Babakaka Ngorgi.

Delivering judgement on Tuesday, the president of the court, Brig. -Gen. Arikpo Ekubi, said the prosecutor had proved his case beyond reasonable doubt that the accused intentionally shot and killed Ngorgi, who was the Adjutant of 212 Battalion, Bama.

“You intentionally opened fire and emptied your magazine of nine rounds of ammunition on the deceased officer, Lt. B.S Ngorgi, who was the Adjutant of 212 Battalion, Bama, which led to his instant death.

“You betrayed the trust and confidence reposed in you by the Nigerian Army to ensure dignity and respect for human life.

“Your action is therefore viewed with displeasure and as affront to efforts of the present leadership of Nigerian Army which emphasised the protection of human rights and professionalism in the discharge of its constitutional roles.

“While condemning your action of unlawfully killing the deceased officer in a gruesome manner, this court considers the plea in mitigation punishment by your counsel, the General Court Martial takes cognisance of all your counsel has said and the fact that you are involved in the Theatre of Operation.

“However, the gravity of the crime that you have committed against the innocent officer which by application is a crime against humanity and an attempt to drag the good name of Nigerian Army into mud must be sanctioned appropriately.

“The general court martial for the offence of murder as provided by section 106 of the Armed Forces Act is death. This sentence is to be carried out by firing squad,” he said.

Ekubi also convicted four soldiers for manslaughter for their involvement in torturing a civilian, one Peter Apogu, to death over a missing car battery.

Based on their nature of involvement in the act, Sgt. Sani Ishaya who is the leader of the team was sentenced to four years in prison, Lance Cpl. Fabiyi Bidemi is to serve two years, while Pte. Adamu Abdulrashid and Pte. Musa Bala are to serve one year each.

The court also sentenced one Pte Mohammed Kuru to three years in prison for accidental discharge at a civilian wedding ceremony that killed a 12 year-old-boy.

One Lance Cpl. Aja Emmauel was demoted to private for assaulting a civilian causing him “grievous bodily harm.”

The court president however said that all the sentences were subject to confirmation by the appropriate superior authority as provided under Section 151 Sub Section 1b and Section 152 Sub section 1b of the Armed Forces Act.

Speaking at the end of the sitting, the Borno Coordinator of National Human Rights Commission, Mrs Jummai Mshelia, lauded the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and show of respect for human rights.

The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has detained one Lance Cpl. Ajayi Johnson, suspected to have killed a commercial cyclist at Umuokereke Ngwa in Abia.

Umuokereke Ngwa is in the Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia.

In a statement on Saturday in Enugu, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations in the division, Col. Aliyu Yusuf, said the army had commenced investigations on the killing.

On August 7, Johnson reportedly shot a commercial motorcyclist Chimaobi Nwaogu at point blank range, killing him on the spot.

Yusuf said that Johnson was on illegal duty at the time of the incident.

“Investigation on the incident revealed that Johnson was one of the soldiers deployed for security duties at Forward Operations Base in Ohanze but absconded from his duty post to an unknown destination.

“He was reported to have been involved in a scuffle that led to the shooting and killing of Nwaogu.”

Yusuf said that Johnson had been arrested, adding that disciplinary procedures in line with extant military laws had commenced.

“If found culpable, he will be dismissed and handed over to the civil police for prosecution.

“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and prays for the repose of the soul of the deceased.

“May the Almighty God strengthen the family of the deceased, his loved ones and the entire residents of Abia State for this irreparable loss,” Yusuf said.
